2009 / Dial-up vs DSL
« on: February 02, 2009, 01:35:38 PM »
At the risk of sounding like a really ignorant fool, I'm going to ask a very stupid question.

I've always had a dial-up connection for my Internet through an ISP. At $8.50 per month and unlimited usage, I thought it was a great deal.

For my phone and cable services, I have Comcast. It's a package deal that came as an introductory offer and I was paying about $85.00 per month. When this offer ended, 2 months ago, my Comcast bill went up to $108.44 per month.

However, Comcast says that for $106.00 and with a smaller cable channel selection (Economy Video), I can also get DSL for my Internet connection (they went through the cable channels I would lose and most of them I don't watch anyway). They say that the DSL speed is 1 megabyte.

My question is this: if I get DSL and still use my iMac, will I notice a big difference in my Internet speed compared to my present dial-up? The dial-up is at 56K but the ISP says it's really 53K. I know that presently I cannot stream nor use YouTube. Would I be able to stream and watch YouTube with DSL?

2007 / Why are e-mails to me with attachments bouncing?
« on: December 16, 2007, 07:25:58 PM »
Whenever my manager at work sends me an e-mail with an attachment, it bounces.

But when she sends an e-mail without an attachment it comes through okay.

Does anyone know why this could be happening?

Any feedback will be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

2008 / Stupid question regarding Instant Messenger
« on: November 26, 2007, 08:37:08 PM »
Hi,

I have an iMac: 350 Mhz/OS10.3.9/80GB hard drive/516 RAM.

Every now and then someone asks me to communicate with them through Instant Messenger. But I've never done so because I did not know whether my computer would allow me.

I know this sounds like a really dumb question but do you know whether I can communicate with someone via Instant Messenger? If so, what software do I need to add to my computer?

Any feedback will be highly appreciated.

Thanks!

« on: June 28, 2007, 09:51:35 AM »
I have a 350 Mhz imac with OS 10.3.9.

Does anyone know whether MS Office 2001: Mac Academic will work with my iMac?

Where can I find a description of this version and its system requirements? I've tried but failed.

Basically, I need to know whether it can work with OS 10.3.9.

Any feedback will be highly appreciated. Sorry for being so computer illiterate.

Thanks.

2007 / My iMac isn't turning on: help!
« on: June 11, 2007, 05:47:01 PM »
A short while ago, my iMac had this message:

Type "Mac-boot" and hit return.

It's done this before and everytime I've done so I never had prroblems getting it re-started.

Today, however, it simply turned off.

When I press the button on the keyboard, it won't start up.

This iMac has  new memory and a new hard drive.

What could be wrong?

Any advice will be highly appreciated before I start to panic.

Thanks.

2006 / Is MS Office 98 worth getting?
« on: December 18, 2006, 07:09:57 PM »
I have a G-3, 350 Mhz iMac and recently moved from OS 9.2.2 to 10.2.8. It was a very big move for a novice like me and I'm REALLY enjoying it!

So far I don't have a word processing program.

Through helpful people on this forum, I learned of AbiWord. As soon as I get a chance to visit this place where they can download it and burn in onto a CD, I'll get it.

In the meantime, I've just come across the opportunity of purchasing 1998 MS Office. Should I purchase it or is it too old?

Any feedback will be highly appreciated.

Thanks!

2006 / Is MS Word neccesary with OS 10.2.8?
« on: November 30, 2006, 10:57:32 PM »
I have a 350 Mhz iMac.

I've recently changed its hard drive to a Seagate 80GB. I've also increased the RAM to 516 (the max).

And I've just upgraded from OS 9.2.2 to OS 10.2.8.

I'm very excited!

When I had OS 9.2.2, I used to have MS word 5.0 or 5.1 (I can't remember which one).

OS 10.2.8 comes with TextEdit. But I've not really used it.

I like to write essays and articles.

Should I get MS Word or just remain with TextEdit? If you think I should get Word, what version would you recommend?

Any feedback will be highly appreciated!

Thanks.

2006 / Should I go from Explorer 5.1 to Safari?
« on: October 24, 2006, 09:55:22 PM »
As I mentioned in a separate thread, I have 2 iMacs.

One is a 333 Mhz. It uses OS 9.2.2.

The other iMac is a 350 Mhz. It uses OS 10.2. For a browser, this iMac uses Explorer 5.1. Should I dump Explorer and use Safari? Can Safari work with this iMac? Would it work better than Explorer 5.1.

2006 / Setting up e-mail account
« on: October 24, 2006, 05:00:21 PM »
I have a 350 Mhz iMac. I have just put in a new and bigger hard drive (80 GB) and installed OS 10.2 on it.

Now I want to set up my e-mail account. The e-mail program that comes with OS 10.2 is called Mail.

When I click on the Mail icon at the bottom of my screen, a box opens up. It says "Welcome to Mail."

Then there is information to be filled out (I use x here to protect my identity):

My name: xxx xxx
Email address: xxx@xxx
Incoming Mail Server: mail.xxx.xxx
User Name: xxxxx
Password: ********
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.xxx.xxx

When I hit OK another box opens up and says:

"The POP server 'mail.xxx.xxx' is not responding. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the 'Incoming Mail Server' field. If it still doesn't respond, the server might be temporarily unavailable.

"If you continue, you may not be able to receive email."

Please tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks.
