Macs and Smartfones
« on: December 19, 2006, 10:53:52 AM »
My darling bride has put in a request for a "smartphone" as a Xmas gift.

History:
Some number of years ago we/she aquired a "Handspring Visor" pda and we put Palm Desktop on the Mac(s) which has worked just lovely for "sync" both directions.

We use Verizon as a cellphone provider  and have a great calling plan that cannot be duplicated (grandfathered back to analog days) so we do not wish to change providers.

The issues:
The more I read about smartphones the confuseder I get (began with the current article in Macworld).  If I am understanding things the "sync" issues between the phone(s) and Mac(s) would require a change from "palm os" to Isync, address book, and Ical, and the probable addition of "Mark/Space" software, making it necessary to duplicate all of  the existing data on Palm Desktop into "addressbook" etc.

Then on top of that unless the smartphone is "unlocked" it has to be Verizon compatable, and we sure do not want the "Windows mobile" jawdrop.gif

Has anyone "been there, done that" or have any words of wisdom???

Technology aaaarrrrrrrg.  I am from the generation that still thinks of a "phone" as something one picks up and calls a buddy to go fishing or something. rant.gif

Yeah, a "DumbPhone" is good enough for me. Sorry I can't help on the technical side....
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

Wish I had help for you but I'm waiting to see what Apple comes up with in the near future.

Yes, that fish was 2 seasons ago on the Clark Fork River in Western Montana.

I stopped by the Verizon Wireless store this morning and now I no longer need an answer. Forgetting about all of the "sync" issues, I found out that Verizon does provide a "smartphone" a Treo 700(something) that is Palm compatable. What makes it forgetable is:

$450 bucks if you buy it outright
$300 plus if you have a qualified fone for upgrade.

HOWEVER the kicker is:   $45 bucks a month additional to use it on Verizon wireless. What they are doing is making Verizon wirelss an ISP for your telephone service, to enable access to the net.

Dumbfone, and Visor PDA will have to suffice for the foreseeable future.

WOW

I have to look really closely to see the fish.

Uh, er, um... I'm sure it's just the grainy photo. It's a nice catch, really! wink.gif

I mean, the tiny photo...

Or no, my failing eyes. Yeah, that's it. whew.gif
