10.5.7 Update available
« on: May 12, 2009, 04:54:45 PM »
Although some have reported inability to successfully download using Software Update. One solution may be to wait a few days, to see if Apple has a server/SU problem. Another would be to try the <Combo Updater>.

After backing-up my iMac via SuperDuper! I applied the update using Software Update. Apple's servers are probably straining under the load because it took two attempts before the download began... It took maybe fifteen minutes to download and install, restart, etc., etc., etc...  sleep1.gif

So Far So Good.  The Grateful Dead sound just as good as they did before the update: Easy Wind (Live At Capitol Theatre, Port Chester, NY - 2/19//71) via Pandora.   eusa_dance.gif

Otherwise there's nothing to see here folks, so move along please...  police.gif

IAWM

Using the Combo updater...

I had the "normal" double restart, but aside from that, all appears normal (so far).
Safari is at v3.2.3 and PithHelmet still works. What other apps changed version numbers, I dunno.
My Acid 3 test with Safari remains at 75.
Repairing Permissions still yields many repairs.
Printing, networking, and internet all remain normal
No real issues have surfaced (yet). But no real enhancements/benefits seen either (yet).

IMNHO: Unless you're able to make a verified back up or two, I see no rush to install this critter.

More info on what has changed or been fixed. Note <these instructions from Apple>. Good practices for any update to any important software. smile.gif notworthy.gif

Improvements:
    latest security fixes
additional RAW image support for several third-party cameras
improved video performance for recent Macs with NVIDIA graphics
resolves an issue with Dvorak keyboard layout in Mac OS X 10.5.6
improves the reliability and accuracy of Unit Converter, Stocks, Weather and Movies Dashboard widgets
addresses a situation that may cause issues when logging into Gmail
improves reliability when syncing contacts with Yahoo!
expansion Slot Utility for Mac Pro now reports the correct PCIe slot configuration
improves network performance when connected to certain Ethernet switches that have Flow Control enabled
improves stability for network home directories hosted by Mac OS X Server v10.4
improves Finder search results for network volumes that may not support Spotlight searching, such as Mac OS X Server v10.4, Time Capsule, and third-party AFP servers
includes several improvements to Directory Service and Client Management
Not much that will show anything actually visible to the user... dntknw.gif Oh, yeah, a couple each things for iCal, Mail, Parental Controls and Printing.

But I'll take improved reliability and performance for free, any day! clap.gif I'm still not sure any 'lifeguards' have shown up, though... LOL.gif

One poster at MFI claims Apple Techs have admitted there is a display problem with some hardware (whatever he has) and some Apple displays(whatever he has-20" Cinema?). Solution: Don't use some Macs and some Apple displays.

Next?

I used the Software Update approach (as I have for every one with the MBP) and downloaded about 5 hours ago. Not a problem. Worked and works like a charm.
Ignore the argumentative nature of this poster. He is old and can't engage in meaningful dialog very long.
Therefore, management asks that you at least humor him. Thanks.

Software Update did not work for me, so I  used Combo Updater with no problems.

Two days now, and nothing seems amiss.

<Mac Observer> says Fusion recommends against then upgrade until ATI card 3D acceleration works again. I didn't find anything at the Fusion site after a short search. dntknw.gif

For those in to minutiae and detail...

I think this is new in 10.5.7--

Apple goes Green and has changed the Energy Saver light bulb (icon) in System Preferences from an incandescent to a CFL.

I posted earlier in this thread that "nothing seems amiss" after installing 10.5.7.

Well, I have discovered that my SuperDuper automated backups, which used to take 15 minutes, now take an hour and a half. I am in touch with Dave Nanian at ShirtPocket. He knows of no others that are experiencing this. His only suggestion was to turn off "Repair Permissions" in SuperDuper. That did not help.

I think SuperDuper is doing a full backup instead of a Smart Update as instructed. This is not a big problem for me, since I start a manual backup on one external drive at bedtime, and set an automated backup on a different drive at 5:00 a.m. I have defragged my internal drive and both of my external target (backup) drives.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions about what may be causing this and/or what to do about it?

Thanks!

Joe

Bruce,

Did you use the Incremental or the Combo updater? (I used the Combo.)

Just to add info...I am one of the users that has been having serious issue with Finder crashing and freezing after the update.  Tried to cure it with a dose of Onyx and a DiskWarrior rebuild.  No luck.

Wierd thing is I could not get my time machine back up to revert back to 10.5.6.  It would hang after 6% complete.
Ended up reverting back from my SuperDuper back up.

I'll be watching the MF thread on this for a while before trying again.
