Nope.

No Disk Warrior seedy.  Not old, not current, none.

KB

PS Harv snailmailed me a 10.5 Install DVD [not a commercial disk, looks like a personal backup] .

NB.- this project has become a low priority due to other life issues, so I will be unlikely to have any news about my Mac for a couple o' weeks, minimum.

Thx all for help so far, will write again when there is something to report.

Sorry for the late reply.

Back @ the library again...

G5, running 10.5.4, IIRC.

Was powered off for a few weeks, when restarting, it hung, couldn't even get Activity monitor to come up, so I powered it down again and now it will not boot up, it hangs at grey screen.  I do not have a 10.5 CD to boot with and troubleshoot. I don't recall the kybd combo for Safe Mode.

While cleaning up my messy desk, I found the 10.2.7 CD it shipped w/ [presumably] but I doubt that will boot the machine w/  so much higher OS on the HD.  I also tried to zap PRAM, but I now know that I did not accurately remember the key combo.

My next ideas are to try again to zap PRAM w/ the right key combo [command-option-P-R] and see if I can start in Safe Mode [please remind me how], and if no joy, try to boot from 10.2.7 CD.

If someone can mail me a 10.5.x CD, that will be great. Other suggestions welcomed.

TIA,

My first modem was an Acoustic Coupler - you inserted the telephone handset [sized to fit a Western Electric telephone] into the modem.  I used this along w/ a 'dumb terminal' to connect to a friend's Mini-Vax @ his business so that I could logon and play DND evenings & weekends.

Tech / Safari generally faster than Firefox
« on: February 22, 2011, 01:38:07 PM »
In the last couple o' muntz, I've been watching various TV show episodes at IMDB, Fancast, and HULU rather often, and recently experienced a LOT of stalls, causing frequent pauses and or glitches in both in the audio and video, making the vids hard to watch.  It seemed to be worst at HULU, so I began a correspondence with a helpful Tech there over the past several days.

Yesterday, with a flash of insight, I decided to try watching a streaming vid using Safari 3.1.2 instead of Firefox 3.6.13, which I have been using almost exclusively as my Browser o' Choice for several years.  BINGO!!!! The streaming stuttering, pausing, and glitches are all but gone - major improvement in viewing experience!  Subsequently, I have been doing everything web-related with Safari, and it seems that SFR is overall somewhat zippier/snappier/quicker than FF in all things.

Note that this is my subjective impression, no measurements were taken nor animals harmed during my experiment [except for me checking that the two browsers used approximately the same amount of CPU cycles while playing the same video at HULU].

Anybunny else noticed similar?  NB, I'm still using a G5 PPC and 10.5.4, FWIW.

Tech / So, how do YOU use DropBox?
« on: February 22, 2011, 01:13:33 PM »
I use DropBox once-in-a-while to xfr large files [bigger than 10 MB or so, which will choke or be rejected as too large by typical email servers] to friends/correspondents.  Works well, but takes a little bit o' time [not prohibitively long, but I even get crotchety when a process takes extra mouse clicks over what I feel is efficient] to get the 'URL' and then email same to recipient.

...So now this is a good excuse to get a Roland keyboard.

Make sure that whatever kybd you get has a USB Midi* interface so it CAN work w/ GB, and I suggest you also look at Yamaha kybds.

Tech / Any remedy for when iTunes can't find CD info online?
« on: January 21, 2011, 12:23:10 PM »
So that I can listen to it on my iPod, I'm importing an audiobook from CDs and partway through, iTunes says it can't find the CD in the online Gracenote database, so the tracks are generically named, Track 1, Track2, etc. instead of chapter names, as w/ the rest of the book that was previously imported.

Is there any way to manually inform iTunes that this CD is part of a series? Or another way to access the Gracenote db?

Note that iTunes has already imported CDs 1-13, complete with the chapter names, of this audiobook, but has choked on CDs 14, 15, and 16 so far of the 20 disc set.

There seems to be nothing wrong with my internet connection, it's broadband TimeWarner Roadrunner, FWIW.

« on: January 11, 2011, 10:17:16 PM »
Sandy, thanks much for your input.  A couple o' clarifying questions:

I currently have no password setup in my account, will this cause a problem w/ working in Terminal, on the command line, should I add a password, and if I do will I be able to revert to using a blank one?

While I did have some experience using UNIX from the command line many years ago, I think I've prolly forgotten most or all of my knowledge, so I am unsure of some of the details of your instructions above, particularly the use of '/' and space and '.' before or after commands..
