Tech / Warning to Chrome users
« on: February 09, 2021, 11:02:44 AM »
From another forum: If you use the Chrome web browser, engadget is warning that a security flaw in Chrome is being "actively exploited" and that if auto update is not on, you should update now.

Probably something everyone else but me has known for ages....   You can download earlier versions of Apple software - including iTunes - from Apple: https://support.apple.com/downloads/

Community / A White Christmas
« on: December 25, 2020, 06:36:55 AM »
Well, in a few bits of the UK, but the weather people have declared officially that the UK is having a White Christmas - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-55445380

No show in our neck of the woods, but we had frost on the roof tiles. Don't think that counts, though.

Hope everyone is happy and safe with their weather, even if it's not white  :D

Tech / My System drive is almost full...
« on: November 14, 2020, 11:39:23 AM »

MacMini 2018, OS Mojave 10.14.6

Following on from Sooz's thread, I checked my MacMini's drive after being warned it was nearly full. It has a 250GB drive and when I checked storage it told me it contained 8.04GB for Apps; 201.96GB for System; "Other Volumes in Container" 2.84GB, leaving 28GB available. All videos, photos and documents are on external drives.

So what is clogging up the system?

Only other thing I can think of is Mail attachments, but those are generally small things like PDFs and cartoons, photos, etc.

Community / Getting Frances' blog up to date
« on: September 26, 2020, 04:27:35 AM »
Our Shetland correspondent is on her travels and, it seems, has been unable to post links to her latest adventures, so I'm posting them here.

Frances is taking her daughter Flossie to Bristol University where her daughter is doing a Masters degree in Chinese translation for a year. They chose to go for the 13.5-hour ferry to the Scottish mainland, followed by a two-day drive through Scotland and England. Most roads in Shetland are single-track with passing places...

Tech / Missing emails
« on: August 29, 2020, 05:06:12 AM »

The missus subscribes to a number of YouTube channels so gets email when new videos are put up. She created a new gmail address for them. However, the emails all stopped on August 10th. I sent a test email from my BT account which confirmed emails were getting through. With the help of a YouTube video we learned about filtering and blocking and confirmed there were no filters or blocks in her account.

She (and indeed I...) would be very grateful if someone can suggest where else we can look. As a last resort we can create a new account, but we don't like to be beaten  :D

Tech / If you find Downie no longer works....
« on: August 06, 2020, 08:22:12 AM »
Downie is an app which allows you to download videos from the web. It does not work with DRM material. If you do use Downie and it is not working, read how an Apple glitch caused his entire work to vanish without trace.

Go to Charlie Monroe's blog and find out why he had "A Day Without Business"

Try to relax and enjoy the day - and stay safe

Here in the UK the pubs are being allowed limited opening from today, so one wag said it will henceforth be known as "Inn Dependents' Day"  :D

Found on a website for kitchen taps:

This website uses so called "Cookies"

Mind you, in my pedantic opinion, there should be a hyphen between "so" and "called"  :D

Tech / Help - Bluetooth devices not 'seen' by MacMini
« on: June 02, 2020, 04:07:43 AM »
Keyboard and mouse are no problem but the Canon printer and a Logitech BT adapter linked to an old stereo unit are not found, so I can't connect. They had been connected but the Mini had to go for repair (new logic board) and now they don't.
And the Mini's speakers can't really do justice to a bit of The Boss or Status Quo   :tears:

Devices list shows only the 2010 MBP sitting nearby, and the MBP returns the compliment. But that's really no help...

While there must be some way of making the two devices 'visible' again, I haven't managed to find it yet!

Community / 'How Shetland locked down early and stopped the virus'
« on: June 01, 2020, 10:50:54 AM »
TSers who follow Frances' blog of life in the UK's most northerly outposts may find this BBC News report of interest. Covid 19 is naturally the main topic, but it also reveals much about what it's like to live in the UK's most northerly outposts where there are big open spaces and a community of people who know how to work together. A cluster of islands: How Shetland locked down early and stopped the virus in its tracks.

When laundry staff at the hospital found they had a shortage of scrubs, a sewing pattern was posted on Facebook along with an appeal to turn any unwanted bedsheets into medical clothing. "We had bags and bags of finished scrubs within days," says a personal assistant working for NHS Shetland, 38-year-old Lisa Grey, who oversaw the Shetland Scrubs project.

I believe some our North American friends are celebrating their freedom from a tyrannical Brit (or something like that... I don't recall our school history lessons dwelling too much on the subject).

Hope you all have a good weekend and the weather is kind where you are

Community / Funniest films
« on: November 17, 2019, 08:17:16 AM »
Following on from the Chopin thread...

Your top funniest films and a bit about why...

Airplane for the same reason others gave... the most wonderful cringeworthy awful plays on words. I worked with a Shirley who seemed to lose her sense of humour after a few months of being asked if she was joking!

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad Mad World - Zany car race across the US in pursuit of a $350,000 fortune (that would hardly buy a house within 50 miles of London now!!)
Quote from: Wikipedia
The cast features Edie Adams, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Buddy Hackett, Ethel Merman, Mickey Rooney, Phil Silvers, Terry-Thomas, and Jonathan Winters.

Back to the Future - Anybody really need a link for that one?

Over to you :yahoo:

Tech / Bluetooth earbuds pair but won't connect
« on: September 03, 2019, 02:18:12 PM »
Bought a pair of Bluetooth Cambridge Melomania earbuds for my dearest - they're her birthday choice so who am I to argue...

I got them to pair with our 2010 MBP (Snow Leopard), which is 'her' machine, but couldn't get them to connect. Bluetooth Prefs panel confirmed they were paired. In desperation I removed them from the list and restarted the MBP and now I can't even get them paired - they don't even appear in 'found' list.

Web search turned up directions to Debug, but that option does not appear in the SL version and couldn't find any update for the SL Bluetooth app.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received. I'll leave this overnight, and hope that while I'm asleep someone will provide info that leads me to slap my forehead and say "Duh... of course.... "   :blush-anim-cl:

Biggest fear is that I may have to get her a more up-to-date MBP to go with them....
