"Couple of books" ended up with four - the one I was looking for, Audio Hijack which was not in the sale, and three sale offerings, Take Control of... Numbers, iCloud, and Pages.

As an aside, I discovered that the UK (I think) Atari Forum is still active. Wow!!

Hope you don't mind me mentioning another exceptional date. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Graphic Converter. Like Thorsten Lemke, I progressed from an Atari (ST-FM) to a Mac, a secondhand IIcx, bought from an employer who was upgrading.

On his website, Thorsten tells why and how he came to create the app:

Quote
In 1992 Thorsten Lemke, an Electrical Engineer with a Master's Degree, decided to move from Atari to the Apple Macintosh and wanted to convert his entire picture collection into one of the then standard Mac formats. Unfortunately there weren't any programs available that could do this. This was the motivation behind the decision to create a program to accomplish this job himself.

You can read the full story here

Now I'm off to buy a couple of books  :D

If I DO have to use Google or Amazon, I always use Safari's Private Window and make sure I close the tab afterwards.

I just don't use FaceBook.

We got caught a couple of years ago with the "free sample, just pay for P&P" (post and packing).

Of course they then had our bank details and we had missed the tiny print under the huge, bright 'pay now' banner. In the tiny print, we had set up a monthly direct debit

Fortunately we keep an eye on our bank statements and were able to cancel the card, but not before we had been caught for a couple of hundred pounds. Because they had actually sent a tiny pot of some unheard of brand, we could not take any action even if it WAS possible to track them down!

Another lesson learned the hard way. It's not wise to trust ANY advert which appears suddenly from the side of your screen...

One teacher was always late for classes. So the kids called him "Mister Bus"

Frances and family had a busy and stressful night, so I have taken the liberty of posting on her behalf.

Thank you Jim, a good read

Jon - you might find this BBC report helpful since it caters for dumbos like me

Some airlines, including BA, cancelled some flights to the US yesterday (Wed), others switched to different aircraft types.

(Even an infrequent flier like me would think it was quite a logistical nightmare!)

Bet you thought the holiday season was over....

I ordered a chicken and an egg from Amazon this week.
I’ll let you know…

Caller: My wife’s in labour and I don’t know what to do.
Operator: Is this her first child?
Caller: No, it’s her husband...
