I do not think it's compatible with anything but other iChat AV users. At least, that is what I heard some time ago.

iChatAV will only work with other iChat users. It won't work with any other VideoConferencing software. It's rumored that a Windows version may be available by the end of the year.

For voice chat you need a minimum off 400Mhz.
For video chat you need a minimum off 600Mhz.
But since you are on a G4, i think you already have the minimum on both.

Hmmm, not sure what else might be the reason.

I think the iChat AV beta is time limited. Now you have to pay for iChat AV (unless you've installed Panther, then you get the full version free).

Yeah, true.... but it's expiring on dec 31 this year.
Smiley just installed iChatAV Beta on a system last week (gosh, that took me a while searching for it online, since Apple already took off the Beta installer to replace it with the final software).
I was thinking though, iChatAV requires Jaguar (OsX.2) for the minimum.
So maybe you are on an older system?

Has anyone used iChat at its minimum quality setting on a 600MHZ G3?  How well does it work?

I have played with iChat AV on my 500 Mhz iMac and it worked fine, except that the volume has to be cranked way up.
