For Facebook, I use the Arc browser. No ads and the pages look the best of any browser I've used.
Same here. I like the Arc browser.

I've made some really useful changes to my Safari start page thanks to his tips. Your usage may vary. ;)

Ever heard of "Rumble"? Here's a description of their "goal":
Quote from: Jeremy W. Peters, NYT
Rumble has already built out its own cloud service infrastructure and video streaming capacity, offering it and its partners greater independence from the Amazons and Microsofts of the internet — and the assurance that they can’t be shut down if one of those providers decides to pull the plug over objectionable content.

As much as I dislike Amazon/Google/Microsoft/other internet giants, is that really what we need? Do we really want a "giant" with no regard to what they "publish". Can Truth withstand an internet like that? Truth is already under attack by extremists and conspiracists. :wallbash:

Do you have a link to Peter's statement?

Never mind. I found the article you are apparently referring to.  IMHO, this thread is way too close to the "no politics" rule. With that comment, I'll step away before I say things I'll regret.

Tech / Re: How do I turn off these pop-ups?
« on: March 08, 2022, 11:29:14 AM »
I noticed that at the bottom of the pref window it was set to the default for “When visiting other websites: Block and Notify” — so I switched that to Block.

Thanks to both of you. Hopefully this adjustment will work.
An update: changing the setting to BLOCK works for some sites, but not others. I have no answer on how to fix this, other than to live with it. Not worth spending any more time on at all.

Go to Safari > Preferences > Websites and select Pop-up Windows to view your settings. As a shortcut, you can customize the Safari toolbar (via View > Customize Toolbar) to include the Website Preferences icon.

I assume that you haven't done the above, but if you have, please tell us what else you have tried.
This shows that several of the offending sites are listed as either “Block and Notify” or “Block,” which makes me think these lovely “can we pester you” notifications are coded to ignore Safari’s preferences.

I noticed that at the bottom of the pref window it was set to the default for “When visiting other websites: Block and Notify” — so I switched that to Block. Of course, now I’ll have to visit certain sites (like here) and set them to Allow. Obviously I didn't notice this when I set up my new iMac as I didn't transfer anything over, instead I used a totally brand new clean install. Thanks for reminding me.

You might want to see if Monterey also has a "Notifications" item in the Websites list. That allows you to Deny or Allow sites that have 'asked' for permission to show alerts in Notification Center. I assume that "Notification Center" is the Notification system of the entire OS. :dntknw:

Lastly (is that a reel wurd!), you can try turning all notifications OFF in System Prefs->Notifications->Safari: "Allow Notifications". However, you may miss important requests at your front/side/rear doors!
All I saw in the system prefs of Monterey was a turn all notifications off, and I don’t want to go that route.

Thanks to both of you. Hopefully this adjustment will work.

Tech / How do I turn off these pop-ups?
« on: February 27, 2022, 01:13:35 PM »
On my iMac, more and more sites have a pop-up window that seems to be attached to the page, asking if they can send me alerts. (see attachment) Is there a way to turn this off? It's driving me crackers, and I'm already on the edge as it is--I don't need any more help. 🤪

FWIW: brand new iMac, running Monterey (12.12.1), using Safari version 15.3 (17612.4.9.1.8).

Thanks for helping me save my sanity. 😂

Sounds like the problem is with Mozilla. :dntknw:
No, Chrome is currently at Version 98.0.4758.102, and is the most used browser with 77% of the market. Next competitor is Safari @ 7+%, and it goes from there. So this could be a huge deal a lot of web users. ;)

Tech / Re: AT&T Has Too Much of My Info?
« on: January 29, 2022, 11:50:38 AM »
Wow. That is a bit on the creepy side. I've also been having probs with phone calls (and texts) not coming through from "allowed" people. I've yet to figure it out. For me, it all started when I bought my new iMac and suddenly found that settings on my iMac were controlling my iPhone and iPad. Still trying to work it all out, but I make it a point to pick up my iPhone several times at night (while I'm awake, obviously) :p to check for texts/calls from family. It's really frustrating.

Hope you now have AT&T up to date on who you do, and don't, know. ;)

Does the dot change colors when you actually talk to him?
The orange dot is there while Siri waits for me to speak when I first hold down the "home" button. It's also there while I'm talking. Once Siri replies, the dot disappears. The behavior is the same on iPhone and iPad. I've not seen a green dot.  :dntknw:

I see an orange dot on dark and light wallpapers, in both dark appearance and non-dark; but once he (I use a guy's voice) talks to me the dot goes away.  :dntknw:  Until you posted this, I'd never noticed the dot. :p
