These men, white, black, Asian, Latino, Native American
These men, Protestant, Catholic, Jew, Muslim
These men, rich, middle class, poor

These men, gave their last, best effort for Freedom
These men, lie together, with no prejudice in their status
These men, forever equal in their final repose

These men, expect their sons, their heirs to respect the dignity of their sacrifice

Or they have died in vain.

Tech / Nytimes website messed up on Safari
« on: October 22, 2020, 11:10:29 PM »
While on the main page of NYT, I may have hit some combination of keys that changed how the entire website presents itself on screen. I've dumped cache, cookies, etc., closed Safari and am at a loss of what to try next.

It isn't happening on Firefox, just Safari and it happened right in front of me as I had my hands on the keyboard so I'm thinking I hit some sort of combo that put the site in this format. Or maybe some link I may have accidentally hit on the main page changed things.
(Also, couldn't post this using Safari, clicking on Post button did nothing, had to use Firefox)

Community / HAPPY 20th BIRTHDAY TECHSURVIVORS!
« on: September 18, 2020, 05:29:36 AM »
If my ancient brain is correct, September 18, 2000 was our first day of going live to the public. TS evolved over many months and nearly a thousand emails among the initial 17 founding members. We had met each other at the old NoWonder forum which had undergone changes that we didn't like, so we decided to create our own.

Sadly, virtually all of the originals have left the admin, some voluntarily, sadly others we lost to time and human mortality.  :tears:

But after all these years, trials and tribulations, we're still here!    :yahoo:

Tech / Trouble getting/staying logged in
« on: March 26, 2020, 02:59:40 AM »
I noticed that lately when I come here I'm recognized as a guest despite having logged in the day before and choosing "Forever". This is the first time I've ever had this problem.

I dumped cookies but then it wouldn't let me sign in at all telling me "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again." Tried many times by going to other sites first, using new tabs, choosing one month, etc. Finally got in by using the link in an email sent regarding a personal message. It brought up a different log in window which finally let me in.

This isn't part of social distancing is it?   :whistling:

I'll bet this is discussed in a thread somewhere previously but if so, I can't find it. (using Firefox BTW)

Any thoughts?

I received an email today from Heidi Rubinstein letting me know that her father, Harvey had passed away in January.

Harv was one of the original founders of Techsurvivors, known here as "Pendragon".  As I wrote to his daughter, he was well known for his intelligent, thoughtful responses and his dry wit. At one point he offered to take on a large part of the expense of our changing servers, but fortunately we didn't need it as we found another route. He had retired from TS service a few years ago as well as his work. My last email correspondence with him was of course Mac related in which he generously offered to send me an unused laptop if I knew of someone who could use it.

The world is poorer without him.

Some of you old timers will recognize the name. Al was one of the original founders of TS and was an upbeat guy with a positive outlook on most things. He left TS after many years of contributing in order to spend more time with his growing family.  In response to our recent notice of the new software change, we received the following:

"Aloha Techsurvivors!

Thank you for sending me this email update.  It was refreshing to see that you all are still in full force with this forum.  I'm not sure who I may be writing to but wanted to inform some of the members of the board of who I am and who my husband was.  My name is Rhana Lau and my husband was Allen Lau, a previous board member of Techsurvivors many years ago.  I thought I should take this moment to inform you that my husband passed away in August of 2014.  His passing was due to illness which was both shocking news for us as well as quick.  If you could kindly share this information with any board members who may have known Allen and worked along side with him back in those early years, I would be very grateful.  For me to have received this email and take notice that it was from this forum, I had to catch my breath there for a second.

My sincerest best wishes to all of you,
Rhana Lau

Community / Nor'Easter. part 2 (the sequel)
« on: March 05, 2018, 01:41:51 AM »
My neighborhood just got power back here. Been out since Friday when the storm blew through with near hurricane winds. It's been five years since Hurricane Sandy dropped by and left it's mark by toppling thousands of trees. This storm was a mini version of that.

We lost a good sized pine near the road that lay at a 45ยบ angle on the wires until the top half was chopped off this afternoon by the power company (or some tree service). They threw the debris all over and onto the property across the street. They lost a huge double-trunked hardwood tree that I actually watched split and go down. Pretty frightening to see it happen but luckily it missed his house. Lot's to clean up in the days/weeks ahead.

Fortunately our generator kicked in and worked like a champ but the propane was getting low and I cut back on the heat, etc. to conserve. We also lost landline phone (and DSL internet) until this evening. I checked the power company site and our town (Tewksbury) was 91% without power and the town next to us was 78% out. They had predicted we would get power by Tues or Wed but we lucked out in our little crossroads. One of my neighbors across the field still has his generator running. Not sure if he got power back.

I'm hoping Jane is OK on the Cape cause they got some really high winds up there, worse than us.

Will be going to the other house tmrw to see how that fared.  Thinking.gif

« on: February 20, 2017, 02:25:19 AM »
Called Dick a few days ago to wish him a Happy Birthday and we had a nice chat.

I promised to pass on his regards to "anyone who might remember the old guy". I assured him that there were many at TS who not only remembered but who thought of him frequently and fondly. We owe him a lot.   notworthy.gif
