Tech / Re: Missing Photos
« on: December 29, 2020, 03:11:30 PM »
Raven, I don't use Photos for precisely the reasons evident in your issues (bizarre behaviour over which I have no control - how photo libraries are set up, etc. etc.) Sorry - I want to set up my own filing system!! I use Lightroom. ;)

However, to your question about combining the libraries - Apple has a support doc on that:

https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT209528

As to the missing images - look and see. You can do so via a browser. See "How to access iCloud Photos online" a little more than half-way down this article. https://www.blog.motifphotos.com/using-icloud-for-your-photos-how-to-access-your-photos-on-icloud-2/

Looking at a thread from 8 years ago isn't likely to provide much in the way of useful solutions, methinks. ;)

I would suggest that you try the steps here: https://appletoolbox.com/icloud-keeps-asking-for-password-ios-and-os-x-fix/

If you enabled it a number of operating systems ago, you can still turn it off...

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8231823

Otherwise, you're stuck with it. I really hate being forced into these schemes that require that I have my iPhone at hand all the time...my bank now requires 2FA for online banking, and some other services (MailChimp, various web hosts) require it - seemingly unaware that in the case of hosting services, often it is NOT the client/account owner doing the day-to-day work, and 2FA becomes a major PITA when you're trying to work on a client's account and he/she gets the blasted codes on his/her phone. In a meeting. In a different time zone. Etc. etc. ARGH.

Tech / Re: How do i delete an app purchase on my iphone
« on: December 18, 2020, 02:53:56 PM »
Just an FYI - when looking for apps in the App Store, if it says - in teeny type below the "Get" button - "in app purchases" scroll down and LOOK at the In App Purchase section. In every case I've checked so far, they have HEFTY subscription fees. Look for ones with no "in App Purchase" - those appear to be free, or list the price one-time price.

This is ridiculous - apps that have subscriptions attached should be much more clearly marked as such - like the not-free one-time fee ones are!

Chicken of the VNC: https://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/ is one option.

Another is Chrome Remote Desktop. https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/1649523?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&hl=en

Both are free. :)

Just a little "Rapid Unplanned Disassembly" at the end...

No - not a steep price. Windscribe.com is one I use - the free version gives you 10GB a month, which is all I need to grab the odd BBC show that I forgot to record on PBS etc. It shows that I'm in the UK - all I have to do is grab a random UK postal code.

NordVPN is great and is known for working well all over. It has 5400 servers to choose from, in 59 countries

https://nordvpn.com/

Both will have options that show you're in the UK.

So give Windscribe a whirl and see if it works - on their free plan. If that works, then choose between Windscribe and Nord, would be my advice. No need to plunk down any money to find out. :)

Yay! Glad it's working now! Strange bug, that's for sure...

Jim, try from another account, perhaps? Of course, the fact that you're seeing this on two different Macs is a bit odd...

BTW - what happens after you click on the "Browse" button? You didn't explain where the process goes off the rails, exactly.

So - the first time I tried to post, the image was too big. Cleared it, and attached a smaller version and it wouldn't do a darn thing when I clicked "post" - had to close the window and start a new post with the correctly sized photo. But otherwise, it was fine.

Well, I'll give it a shot...this little guy showed up across the road yesterday morning. We've seen him before - the last time, he was chasing a squirrel, which he finally caught and carried off. Very cat-like in their play/hunting behaviour!

Given the following, I suspect you're looking at abandonware:

Last stable versions:

Windows: 10.5.0 (r4) / July 28, 2015; 5 years ago
Android: 4.1.2 / December 16, 2016; 3 years ago
IOS: 2.0.1 / February 14, 2013; 7 years ago

No software company that intends to stay in business goes that long between updates, and has a completely out of date website, complete with non-functional SSL...and no way to contact them. Sorry, but this is almost certainly an ex-parrot. Either that, or they've got a very strange business model. They are still traded on the Tel Aviv stock exchange and after years of steady decline in value (earnings decline of 70% over the past 5 years), the stock has gone way up this year. But darned if I can find any reason why that is so. One report I read said it had 20 employees and revenue of $1.37M USD. Nobody's getting rich on that - and keeping the lights on could be a challenge. https://simplywall.st/stocks/il/software/tase-bbyl/babylon-shares

Tech / Re: How far can I upgrade my iMac and Safari ?
« on: November 21, 2020, 02:53:36 PM »
So, Affinity doesn't convert/open InDesign files directly. See: https://affinity.help/publisher/en-US.lproj/index.html?page=pages/GetStarted/importDocument.html?title=Importing%20documents

I always use PDFs for printing, so haven't run into the issue of the printer not using the application.

Never actually heard the term "pin drive" used - definitely not used 'round these parts. ;)

Yeah...I'll wait. NOT messing with my backups!! Running Catalina on the iMac and Mojave on the MBP (so I can still use PS 6). Too darn busy with work stuff to do it anyway. This was the case last year with Catalina - and then my iMac died in January, so I was forced to update. Luckily have access to Photoshop & Lightroom via my son's account; otherwise I would have had to subscribe. Or give up on both - which I've also considered. I own Affinity Photo and CaptureOne...it's just the TIME problem!!! Is there a CCC for people? I need it.
