2006 / Odd, strange e-mail messages?
« on: May 27, 2006, 01:12:59 PM »
About 2 months ago I started getting these strange emails, from addresses I have never heard of, they are never the same. But all of them have some sort of attachments, I delete them immediatly.  But they keep coming.

My ISP, adelphia.net has not a clue about them either, they helped me set up filters, but that only helped a little.
I do assume these are harmless, but I would guess the attachments have virus or bad stuff in them for PCs.  As most of them do say "Permanent fatal errors", whatever that means.

jcarter11 at adelphia.net is the address my cable ISP gave me, but I dont use it much.  Though I could use their webmail if I was away from home if I wanted to.

A lot of them say "This message was undeliverable due to something or other"

Do you have any idea what these are?  Or how to stop them?
They really dont bother me, except I have to hit delete about 15 times a day.
Thank you in advance,
Jane

2003 / Question about back up power supply
« on: November 05, 2003, 09:44:48 AM »
I bought a TrippLite UPS, and it works fine.  The other day our power went off and I quit my programs and shut my G4 down.  I think that the battery would last about 10 minutes with the computer and the ViewSonic monitor.
But I was wondering what would happen if I was not here and the power went off?  Would the UPS battery get lower and lower, or would it shut down immediatly, sort of like unplugging the Mac.
Could the Mac be damaged?
I turn my Mac on in the morning and off at night, leave it on all day, even when I am outdoors.
None of my friends have ever had this happen.
Thanks,   Jane

2003 / old iTunes
« on: October 31, 2003, 12:48:17 PM »
I used to listen to the iTunes a lot, but recently I have noticed that my list of available stations are far fewer than before.
Is it possible this is being phased out?
I don't need to download music, I just like to listen while I am using Photoshop Elements.
Used to love the Blues(especially the stations with no commercials), but all, every single one, of 'my' Blues stations are not on my iTunes list any more.
I am still using 9.2.2 and iTunes 1.0.1
How do you add stations if this is possible?
Kerbango or something like that pops up when I open iTunes.

2003 / Router questions
« on: September 14, 2003, 12:24:09 PM »
I have a 2 year old Asante FR3004C router.  I know not much about it, except that I wanted a firewall and a way to have 2 Macs(OS 9.2.2) to be net connected at the same time.
Bought it, plugged it in to my cable modem, and it has worked flawlessly.  But now, I find that I need to reset it every morning or a couple times a day so re-connect to the net.  I unplug the power for a minute or 2. I wonder why?
Do I need to upgrade the firmware perhaps? If so, I better find out how to do that properly.

Also I was looking at the router log, and found "unrecognized access" from several IP addresses to port 1026  from places around the world.  I have not a clue what is happening, but I thought that a router would provide a firewall, so people could not get 'into' my Mac.
My learning process is unending and sure is fun, thanks to you people. I have been learning Photoshop, so havent been back here for a while.
Thanks again,  Jane thanx.gif

2003 / Remote Access problem
« on: July 13, 2003, 08:39:26 AM »
I have been trying to get my brother off AOL and on to Earthlink, and when I fire up his Remote Access, it gives me the error message, "Controller" is missing.
So I copied my Remote Access v. 4.0.2 off of my powerbook( just dragged it over to his computer using firewire target mode), and trashed his old RA. Restarted.  But even with my new RA, I still get that "Controller" missing message.
Anybody know what is going on?  His is year and half old iMac with OS 9.1 and mine is 9.2.2.
(I had him succesfully on cable, but his wife said it was too expensive, and terminated it), so now it is Earthlink for him(with the 6 month new subscriber deal, no dough for 6 months.)
Thank you in advance,  Jane

2003 / New Avatar?
« on: June 24, 2003, 08:21:29 PM »
I would love to put a small 48x42 .gif in for my avatar.   It is this,
http://www.pbase.com/image/18224001
I tried uploading the actual picture from my computer, as I do my pictures going to album sites, browse: then entered it as
avatar.gif, and it is about 48 x 42 pixels.  Wouldn't go, so I tried to
upload it from  my pbase.com account, neither, so I looked on the help page, followed the instructions again to no avail.
I was hoping that you could give me some additional help or suggestions.
If it won't work, I will use my old one I had when you had the old
forum.
Thank you,  Jane Carter

2003 / A new Mac?
« on: June 24, 2003, 12:21:16 PM »
I am considering a new Mac, my 3 year old G4, OS 9.2.2 is all I really need, but with all this talk about the new Macs?????? and OS X is supposed to be really really nice too,,,,,
The word is I "want",  not I "need".

I am not a gamer, not iMovie user, don't use DVDs, I mostly use Photoshop and Elements of Photoshop, and some Illustrator and GoLive.

All the information is a bit confusing to me, and that is why I want to ask the opinion of you experts here, before I even start to shop.

Do you think that an iMac would be sufficient for me?  The iMac with the 17" flat panel monitor is nice.

What about the video card, would the power of that effect my work with Photoshop?  Would it be better to get the best one?
Could the machine be customized to fit my needs?
I would plan to add all the RAM that the machine would hold.
With the new G5 coming soon, perhaps the prices of the older ones would drop somewhat.

Thanks in advance for your advice,   Jane

2003 / Links to images
« on: April 26, 2003, 03:51:00 PM »
When I link to an image, I usually just paste it in like this for example, http://www.pbase.com/image/15472354
But if I wanted to link and just use a word or phrase like MyGrandson or whatever, so when someone just clicked on the phrase, the link would work.  I looked at the UBB code, but couldn't figure how to just have the phrase and not the whole URL.  Could I use this like HTML?
<a href="http://www.pbase.com/image/15472354">MyGrandson</a>  Is it better to have it open in a new page?  I like that better.
On the Elements of Photoshop forum, I would like to be able to do the same thing.
Thanks, I am learning!  I visit Techsurvivors every day and learn something valuable.

2003 / Your Mac Account is now your Apple ID?
« on: April 22, 2003, 05:09:00 PM »
Just got this e-mail from Apple,,,,,Wouldn't it be nice if it really was! Mine isn't, and my password won't work at all.    The e-mail vanished too.
I paid for the new $50 extension too.  Gone, oh well,,,,,,,,

What the heck, most of my pictures are now on Pbase.com now anyway.

2003 / Mac friendly web host?
« on: April 17, 2003, 01:33:00 PM »
I think finally I am ready to put a page or two onto the net, so I must find a Mac friendly web host. I registered  www.jcarter.net for 3 years for $30 and have it "parked"
3 important things to me:
1. Mac friendly
2. Beginner friendly
3. Phone tech support
Google found www.itsamac.com and I talked with them, they seem to fit all my three 'needs'!  $150 a year, a bit more expensive, but 'you get what you pay for'.  This is going to be fun!  This beginner finally is getting off the ground, and you people are a wonderful help to me.  I read thru your instructions and topics daily.
Thank you in advance, Jane

2003 / old iMac needs OS upgrade
« on: March 09, 2003, 04:38:00 PM »
I bought my computer-illiterate husband an older iMac for Christmas.  And he likes it!  He hates the PCs at work, and won't touch them.
It is a 333, with 96 MB memory(he calls it mammory) and has OS 8.1.  He wants to get a Nikon digicam and will probably need to upgrade to 9.2.2(thats what I use on my G4).  Can this be done on this machine?  I don't have the 9.2.2 disc, as a friend upgraded this one.  Maybe all this would work on OS 8.1, but I thought that it would be better to go to 9.
