Tech / Wifi repeater
« on: March 15, 2011, 08:54:43 AM »
Exactly which AirPort Base Station do you have? Besides the "saucer" nickname, there are five models in that shape, they are:

AirPort Base Station (Graphite) 1999, 802.11b

AirPort Base Station (Dual Ethernet) 2001, 802.11b

AirPort Extreme Base Station (no modem) 2003, 802.11b/g

AirPort Extreme Base Station (Modem) 2004, 802.11b/g

AirPort Extreme Base Station (Power over Ethernet (UL 2043)) 2004, 802.11b/g

To best of my knowledge, the later three (Extreme 802.11g) can support roaming or WDS networking. (I personally don't like the term repeater in this situation as it is a bit confusing.)

Between roaming (ethernet cable between each base station) and WDS (wireless between each base station), you get much faster performance for roaming set up of course. The WiFi performance is unfortunately degraded under WDS setting.

If your "saucers" are of the 802.11b models, forget about it, it is too slow.

For the performance's sack and long term consideration, I would suggest you getting a few new AirPort Extreme Base Stations (with 802.11n) and hook them up with long Cat.6 ethernet cables, i.e. roaming network.

Tech / Installing apps without permission

Both apps now trashed. Considering Adobe apologized back in May 2010 and I installed CS5 in Feb. 2011, I'm taking their sincere apology with a grain of salt. wink.gif

Sure was a frustrating way to spend a few hours.

I also discovered so after I installed the CS5 in December 2010. It took me a long time to figure that out.

Tech / 64-bit vs 32-bit

Don't even need an adobe app installed. thumbup.gif

Correct, except kimmer wanted to know if her Adobe Photoshop CS5 was suitable for the Topaz filters update. And base on the initial post, 32-bit or 64-bit might be an issue with the update. Therefore, I believe checking the Photoshop CS5 running mode is more relevant to her situation.

Tech / 64-bit vs 32-bit

If I understand correctly, my iMac runs in 32-bit by default (even though I'm running 10.5 not 10.6). PS CS5 is 64-bit by default, but can be set to run in 32-bit. So which way do I run it -- 32 or 64?

One quick way to check.
Can you see the Lightning Filter in Photoshop CS5, then you are running it on 32-bit mode. That Filter is not compatible in 64-bit more.

Does it matter on 64bit or 32bit? If you are not doing something big you will be fine with either.

Late to this thread, but here's my two cents.

If you want a good WiFi coverage, the best way is to get more Base Stations. I personally do not recommend getting WiFi repeaters, in fact, I recommend you upgrade your current AirPort Extreme (saucer) to one of those new AirPort Extreme Base Station (802.11n) or Time Capsules (802.11n), or at very least AirPort Express Base Station (802.11n).

Next, you might need multiple Base Stations. All of those needs to have the same wireless network ID, so when you travel from one base station to next, you can remain connected. To achieve this, there are two ways. The first one is connected via ethernet cable known as Roaming Network. The second one is connecting each base stations wirelessly, known as WDS.

Also, I strongly against using ethernet over power outlet (or ethernet over power line), the main reason being is doing so, you are intentionally ruining the sinusoid wave form of your electricity.

Well, that was my two cents, not a cheap option I know.

(As for me personally, I have 3 AirPort Extreme Base Stations, and 1 Time Capsule Bast Station, all 802.11n, and Roaming across the house.)

Tech / New MacBook Pros out today
« on: February 26, 2011, 06:06:24 PM »
"Light Peak" was only a code name, according to Intel's official Thunderbolt page (also linked from Apple's Thunderbolt page). I won't be paying that much attention to the name.

Let's hope there will be more devices adopting Thunderbolt technology.

Thank you guys for remembering me. Sorry that I haven't been active here in Techsurvivors, I've been a bit busy recently.

I am still living in Sydney, NSW, Australia. Still watching Desperate Housewives, still keeping an eye on Apple news.

(My parents live in NZ although, they are in Auckland.)

2009 / Yojimbo 2.0 released
« on: September 04, 2009, 11:07:00 AM »

Yojimbo is a great information organiser, it allows people to put all bits and pieces of information into it, and secure it. Bare Bones released Yojimbo 2.0 with new Tag Explorer, improved Quick Input Panel, PDF Workflow (“Print to Yojimbo”), Drop Dock, and new combined Tag and Label editor and more.

Yojimbo 2.0 requires Mac OS X 10.5.7 or later. And because of this many codes on workarounds and compatibility for older OS have been removed.

Upgrading to Yojimbo 2.0 only costs $20. If you are a Yojimbo 1.x user, you can upgrade to Yojimbo 2.0 for free if you purchased your license of Yojimbo 1.x on or after 1 January 2009.

If you choose not to upgrade to Yojimbo 2.0, Bare Bones also released Yojimbo 1.5.2, a free update to all current Yojimbo 1.x users.

2008 / Professional looking DVD labelling without much cost!
« on: November 13, 2008, 09:15:33 AM »
Personally I don't like the sticker idea.

I buy printable blank CDs/DVDs (TDK PrintOn DVD), and I print them with my Epson Stylus Photo R230. I use Disc Cover for designing the DVD labels.
