Tech / Keyboard with iMac
« on: August 30, 2011, 10:33:21 AM »
Although a slick and avant garde looking keyboard comes with a new iMac, I'm not sure I like it as much as others I've used.   It looks a bit twee and hardly seems man enough for the job.   I find I make a lot more typos on it, particularly with the space bar which seems to need an undue amount of pressure.   I also find myself frequently hitting a 'b' or 'n' with the space bar.     Is it just my lousy typing or are there others similarly plagued.

My favorite board is the Macally, but sadly it needs to be plugged in and I've been trying for ages to rid my desktop  of cables.

If this post looks beautifully typed, It's only because I've spent then last ten minutes correcting it.  sweatingbullets.gif

Tech / Firefox & the disappearing 'Back' button
« on: August 29, 2011, 09:26:40 AM »
Hi everybody!

I'm back after a long absence which has something to do with my decrepitude (nice word!) and lots to do with having moved from Leopard to the King of the Jungle.  Plus I am still trying to master the Track Pad.   But I'm getting there sloooowly.

But this query has little to do with Lion.  It's about my favorite browser.  Well, it used to be my favorite until I could no longer find the 'Back' button.   What's happened?
And how does one get back a page two without an app re-start?  wallbash.gif

2008 / Can't get to the Euro symbol on keyboard
« on: August 22, 2008, 10:27:19 AM »
It's not often I need to use the Euro symbol (€), but it's irritating to have to go to Character Palette > Symbols and drag the beast to the document when the Euro symbol is shown on my keyboard, adjacent to the @ symbol over the 2 key.

I've tried using different European keyboards and holding down the 'alt' and upper-case key, but all I get on hitting the 2 key is ™.

I doubt you chaps across the pond have much use for Euros, but we poor Brits sometimes need it in financial jiggery with the rest of Europe.

Anyone got the secret?  Come to that, anyone got any Euros biggrin.gif

2008 / Fonts in Pages 08 - A question
« on: June 21, 2008, 11:54:55 AM »
Being new to Pages 08 I'm still struggling to get to grips with the multitude of bells and whistles.

What I can't find — and would really like — is a way to get the Font Menu to list fonts as actuals.  I know one can see what they look like by reference to the Font Book but that's very inconvenient.
Word, AW and Mariner Write list fonts as actuals and I imagine there must be a way to get Pages to do likewise.   Someone (Dick? Jim?) let me in on the secret please.

2008 / AppleWorks problem
« on: June 17, 2008, 09:19:01 AM »
I have an AW spreadsheet which now runs to five pages.  Until today it had only four pages and I had no problem printing them all, but since I added an additional few lines today, it now runs to the fifth page.  But the last page won't print.  The print Preview shows only four pages.
I've had a chat with Epsom who say "Not a printer fault.  If Preview shows only four pages that's all the printer can print.  Must be an AW problem".

Oddly enough, the printer will only print a portion of the fourth page.  Preview shows 30 lines on that page but the printer will only print 28 lines although it prints all lines on previous pages.

It's hopeless trying to speak to Apple, so here I am asking the TS brains if anyone has a solution.

Maybe I should transfer the entire spreadsheet to Excel or Mariner Calc.

2008 / International Input Menu
« on: January 24, 2008, 06:16:13 AM »
In the International Input Menu the only items I have ticked are "British" and "US".   Being a Brit, I obviously need the Union Jack to show and I occasionally need the US keyboard for the odd symbol that doesn't appear in the British menu — '#' for example.

Although for years there has been no problem with the British Flag symbol appearing constantly in the menu bar, recently, for no reason I can determine, the symbol will suddenly change to the Stars & Stripes with no input from me.

Any ideas why this should happen and how to cure it?

Also, on my keyboard there is a symbol for the Euro which I sometimes need to use, but can't find the appropriate language in the International Input Menu to display it.  Anyone know how to get it to show?

P.S.  In case anyone wonders why I can't just use the US keyboard all the time, the answer is that I need the British keyboard to display the "£" sign.  Not that I have a lot of them  toothgrin.gif

2008 / iPhoto exporting query
« on: January 16, 2008, 09:29:14 AM »
I received a gift of a "Cibox", a digital photo frame into which one inserts a camera card holding all the pics one wishes to display.
I have a load of pics in iPhoto I wish to export to the card in my camera (a Fuji FinePix F31fd) so that I can then transfer the card to the Cibox.

Problem is I can't find a wayn of exporting iPhoto pics back to the camera.  The iPhoto 'Help' is no help.

Anybody got the answer?

2007 / Keyboard Comments please
« on: October 12, 2007, 11:59:49 AM »
Some week ago I bought the latest Apple wired slim keyboard.  What I particularly like about it are its matt white keys (no glare from the halogens above) and the quiet thump on key depression.  But I have a BUT.  I find that unless I type ultra carefully and press really firmly on the space bar, I finish up withsomethingthat lookslike this.

I've considered putting it in the cupboard and getting Logitech's wired wavy board, but would like to hear from anyone who has one.  Is it any good and are those black keys shiny?
My old Apple board had shiny black keys and I found the glare very off-putting.

Or maybe there's an alternative out there with matt white keys.

Or a tutor who can get me accurately to touch type.

2007 / Apple's new keyboard
« on: August 20, 2007, 08:30:14 AM »
A few funny things were happening with my old wired keyboard and I decided to trash it, but before physically putting it in the bin, reverted to my childhood days when I couldn't resist taking things to pieces.  Did just that and discovered that, discounting what went into the making of the two circuit boards, there were 244 separate parts.  That's just an aside and a piece of useless info for the benefit of anyone interested in collecting such trivia.  biggrin.gif

Although I have an Apple wireless board, I like to have a spare and since I learned recently from a TeeEsser (I forget who) that one can't perform a safe boot with a wireless board, now consider ownership of a wired board a necessity.  So I invested around $70 in the latest offering from Apple.  Those of you on the west side of the pond can buy them for less, but we poor Brits have to suffer the imposition of carriage and tax on the listed $50 tag.     But it's still worth it.

When the package arrived it looked so thin I thought someone had sent me a gift of smoked salmon, but no, it was my new board, looking very slick with its brushed aluminum base and matt white keys.  Positively no reflection even tho' I have a pair of halogen lights right above it.  For me, that was a very important feature, as I found the reflection from the old style black keys very off-putting. The new board is very slim.  The leading edge is slightly less than 1/4" thick and the trailing edge just 5/8", so it sits very low and is probably going to be easier on the wrists for long-period typing.

Think it will take a little getting used to.  There are 19 function keys and I haven't yet got them all figured out, but came across one which when hit caused a typing of the last copied text item.   Key depression is less than on previous boards and the keys are very sensitive, the slightest touch activating them — a feature which at the moment is causing an excess of typos, but I suppose I'll get used to it.  The board is less noisy than others I've had, key depressions resulting in a gentle thud, rather than a clack.

The only criticism I have (after using it for less then half an hour) is that the characters printed on the key tops in grey, are less clear than I would prefer.  IMHO they would be better either in black on white, or if grey is the in thing, then better to have the font bolder.  And as was noted in an earlier TeeEss thread, the font used has changed, which seems to be change for change's sake.

On the whole, pleased with it.  A very nice board. Every TeeEsser should have one.  And when you buy, mention my name so I don't miss out on commission!  biggrin.gif

2007 / Portable hard drives
« on: August 16, 2007, 12:22:39 PM »
Knowing little about portable HD's, I was chatting (asking) about them with Harv.  He suggested the person from whom to get the most helpful info would be Paddy.  I sent Paddy a PM with my queries and sure enough, she came up with some good answers.  Just want to put on record my appreciation of the help received from both of them.    How lucky we are to have such wonderfully helpful folk, giving unstintingly of their time to help us.  Bravo both and thanks again.   tiphat.gif tiphat.gif

2007 / Here's one for Jennie....
« on: August 11, 2007, 05:18:09 AM »
My startup page for Firefox is TeeEss, so I visit the site daily, sometimes several times a day.  There's always a message saying "Welcome bellbram.  Your last visit was xday at --:--".

If that info is stored bellbram is obviously recognised as a bona fide member.  Why then, if I want to do anything other than browse do I sometimes have to log in again?  Thinking.gif

I'm sure there's a perfectly good reason, but I have to say I find the process a tad irritating.  Perhaps if I knew the logic behind it, my irritation would be be dissipated.  smile.gif

2007 / Who knows about iPods?
« on: August 10, 2007, 08:24:14 AM »
I am an iPod iGnoramus.  Haven't got one; don't want one.  BUT I do want to get one for my daughter who has a Dell laptop.
Since Apple have sold far more Pods than there are Mac users, I assume there is no problem using the thing with a PC, but want to be assured.

Also would like views of eXperienced iPod uSers on the most appropriate model.   Just please don't advise me to wait for the iPhone.  Despite Dick's euphoria, as far as I'm concerned it's a no-no.  toothgrin.gif

2007 / Safe Boot problem
« on: August 08, 2007, 02:38:23 PM »
I have many a time done a safe boot with no problems, but recently, taking to heart the advice in a recent thread, decided to Safe Boot prior to downloading Software Updates.   But my G5 (Power PC Tower, with 10.4.10) just refused.  I did the usual, 1) Shut Down.  2) Start up and hold down the shift key on hearing the Boing and not release it until the grey cogwheel starts.  But every time I get a regular Start Up.
What's amiss?  And how to correct it?   Maybe I'm just drinking too much of my favorite tipple  rolleyes.gif

2007 / A little font problem
« on: July 29, 2007, 06:53:25 AM »
Here's a weird one.  Can anyone out there solve the problem?  I recently sent a correspondent a letter written in the 'Handwriting - Dakota' font that comes with Font Book.  He wanted to know the name of the font, so I sent him an e-mail (using Eudora) written in that font.  The only way I could do that was by first writing the mail in Mariner Write, then copy/pasting into Eudora.

The original copied perfectly, except that at every period preceding a line shift, a small upright rectangle appeared.  I could not delete it.  If I tried, the period was deleted.  I've tried to copy/paste something created in Handwriting Dakota into this post, but that doesn't work.

I know this is trivia, but y'all enjoy a challenge.   I know someone will explain how simple the solution is.   toothgrin.gif

2007 / Interesting problem with AIM
« on: March 11, 2007, 11:28:14 AM »
My cousin has only recently downloaded AIM and wants to replace the yellow man icon with a pic of himself.  He has the appropriate icon — right size, right res — but when he follows the AIM instructions gets stuck.

The AIM instructions for inserting own graphic are:
Go to Main:Users:Username:Pictures:Aim Buddy Icons
Then open Aim Buddy Icons which will show a blank window.
Open the appropriate folder and drag the new icon graphic into the Aim Buddy Icons window. Proceed from there according to other instructions.

I have done that with no problem on my G5 using 10.4.8.

BUT he has a G4 with OS 9.3 and says that when he gets as far as 'Pictures' there is no 'AIM Buddy Icons' there.

Any clues, anyone?   I have to say that I have been trying to persuade him to become a TeeEss member, but I think he's wary of making a fool of himself, tho' I've assured him there's no such thing as a...u-kno-wot.

Help would be appreciated, as always  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif
