Tech / kill spam
« on: March 05, 2024, 06:52:29 AM »
Lately, I have been inundated with spam and setting Rules has not helped. I finally seemed to have solved the problem after I realized that most of the sender's emails ended with .de Consequently, I set up a rule to delete any email that contains .de in the From field, and it seems to be working. I assume that de refers to Germany (Deutschland). I have also received emails ending in .es which I assume is Estonia.

I did some research and .es is Spain (EspaƱa). As it turns out, Estonia is .ee

Tech / money-saving Safari extension
« on: December 13, 2023, 11:30:38 AM »
I have been using PayPal Honey for Safari for a few weeks and have saved quite a bit of money. It is available as a Safari extension and is free. Just to add to the original post, this extension searches for coupons that you might not otherwise find. I just ordered some cat food and Honey came up with a $10 coupon that was instantly applied to my total.

After reading many complaints about bugs in the new OSs, Apple has decided to tackle the problem(s). Apple pauses iOS 18, macOS 15 work to stomp bugs now It may be a good thing that my now-obsolete iMac can't run Sonoma.

Tech / Sonoma on older Macs
« on: October 03, 2023, 08:10:28 AM »
According to macOS Sonoma can be installed on 83 unsupported Macs with this tool I can use Sonoma on my (now obsolete) iMac. I'm sure that I won't do it because I can't assume that it will cause more trouble than it's worth. Comments?

Tech / (No Sender) spam
« on: September 05, 2023, 12:19:30 PM »
I am getting inundated with spam that says (No Sender) in the From column. I tried setting a rule to delete them (listing (No Sender) but that hasn't worked. It's only a minor annoyance because it takes a fraction of a second to press Delete, but I want to vaporize these emails. They purport to show links to Harbor Freight, energy conservation, free gifts, you name it.

Suggestions?

Tech / pending updates to older systems
« on: July 19, 2023, 06:37:29 AM »
Since my iMac cannot go beyond Big Sur and I really don't want to get a new computer (read that as my better half gets into a panic at the thought of learning another OS), I am happy to report that Apple will continue to support Big Sur, among others. Apple issues release candidates for iOS 15.7.8, iPadOS 15.7.8, macOS Big Sur 11.7.9, and Monterey 12.6.8

Tech / Safari cannot access this site
« on: July 09, 2023, 06:27:53 AM »
Safari 16.5.1 cannot access http://anatomy.com/ All I get is a blank window, even though the right side of the address bar shows the circular arrow. Firefox has no issues. Is anyone else seeing this? Any explanations?

Tech / MS Outlook: free
« on: March 06, 2023, 12:50:29 PM »
It is now possible: Microsoft makes Outlook for Mac free. After MS Entourage (which I liked) was no longer workable in newer OS versions, I switched to Mail. I had liked Entourage and switching wasn't too bad except that my somewhat-technophobic wife had a period of adjustment (marked with colorful language). After I subscribed to MS Office 365 mainly to get Outlook (which I thought would be just like Entourage) and Word, I found that there were significant differences. I didn't like Outlook's interface and, unlike Entourage, importing contacts from Mail was a huge chore. So, I stuck with Mail (and have learned to like it).

Still, anyone who wants Outlook can now try it gratis.
