As usual, I'm quite late to the OS. Only updated this year.
I have to agree the first hurdle was finding things in the new System Prefs.
First, it's completely GONE! OK, it's not really gone, but the name for this collection is now "System Settings". I'm sure Apple will claim this is the way things should be since their mobile devises have used that term for years... along with M$!
Anyway, I searched for over 30 minutes trying to find the
preference setting for scheduling the Startup/Shutdown of the Mac. "Energy Saver" is still there, but nothing about any kind of scheduling, even from "Help"! (I've always wondered why that function is called "help" since it rarely is) Of course, when you really need help on a Mac, the best source is the WWW (any noobies have an idea what that abbreviation means?). I then discovered that my OS install was
not broken. Apple, in it's 'wisdom' decided that a Mac should behave just like its iDevices; they should just be always ON (even if plugged in to avoid the inevitable
Low Battery warnings).
Bottom line, if you don't want to leave your Mac on 24/7/365, you will have to use Terminal as a "Super User", no less. What could go wrong?!
Well the commands are not really hard to use, not even more than a single line of typing. Just remember to use the correct nemonic for every day. Of course, for folks who still fear Terminal, you can use the
Onyx/Utilities/Scheduling dialog. Onyx is free and can set/edit many other (often hidden but useful)
preferences settings on your Mac. Be sure to download the version for the OD you are using.
