Tech / Old MacBook Pro Bricked
« on: February 07, 2020, 12:31:53 PM »
So, I managed to brick my old computer trying to get it ready to pass along to someone who could use it.

Somewhere along the line in my many moves, I tossed out the original installer DVD. After wiping the computer it seemed to automatically try and install a fresh OS. I spent about an hour or so downloading the installer and accompanying files and then attempted to run the installation.

After a few minutes, I got an error message saying: "No packages were eligible for install. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance." I did that. The Apple advisor said this may be a case of the computer not having the correct time. So he directed me to open Terminal and check. The time was correct so I tried running the installer again. I got the same results. I told the advisor thanks and that I would contact the local Apple store.

The Apple Store told me they wouldn't help me and they suggested that I go to an authorized computer store. Well, that didn't sit well with me because the MacBook Pro is only worth about $25 and I'm not in the market to sell it. I'd hoped that if I could get a basic OS installed, I want to give it to someone who could use a computer.

I tried to make a USB installer but that failed. The files that were put onto the computer during my first attempt seem to be blocking the USB drive.

I checked with the library to see if they had installer disks to check out and they said no. Now I'm going to see if anyone in my family might have a copy of Leopard OS install DVD.

Tech / 1Password 7 Question
« on: February 03, 2020, 12:14:43 AM »
I'm day two into using my new MacBook Pro, updated to macOS 10.15.3

I was using 1Password 6 on my old computer but decided to update to version 7 from the App Store when I got this computer and now I'm having some difficulty with filling the blanks when logging into a web page.

The instructions show a picture with a Go button. I don't see that when I use the Extension. Also, I checked the option to us Touch ID. That doesn't work either so I'm resorting in Copy and Pasting to fill the blanks.

What could be wrong?

Tech / Photo Editing
« on: January 02, 2020, 04:06:53 PM »
I've been out of the loop regarding photo editing for a few years now. I had Photoshop on my computers starting with Photoshop 3 through Photoshop CS. Then, through a series of events, I no could no longer keep up with the advancing technology. This year, I am planning to finally get a new Mac. I've been using a MacBook Pro long enough that another portable will likely be my choice.

So, my question is, which photo editing software is favored by Mac users? I won't be purchasing Photoshop again but if I go with Adobe, I would most likely get Elements as I'm most familiar with the tools in Adobe software.

If there is other software available to someone who enjoys photo restoration and manipulation, please share your ideas!

Thanks and Happy New Year to All!

Tech / Apple's Updates/Upgrades
« on: December 22, 2019, 04:14:55 PM »
Is anyone besides me tired of Apple continuously breaking things so that buying new products is the only solution to having a happy computer?

My MacBook Pro from 2009 is now too old to run 1 Password with Safari. Fortunately, Firefox still supports the Extension so now I use it the majority of the time.

I would love to have a new computer every time Apple decides to change things, making older systems obsolete, but that's just not possible. Don't get me wrong, I love Apple products! I currently have my MBP, an older iPad, two iPhones and an Apple Watch. I just wish they would continue to support older Hardware and Software rather than forcing people to continuously buy new.

:tears:  :thanx: for letting me rant.  :whistling:

Hoping everyone has a Happy Christmas!  :)

Tech / Making Old AirPort Time Capsule Usable
« on: October 30, 2018, 06:50:34 PM »
Hi All, It's been awhile since I posted anything so bear with me.

I purchased a home in August, retiring my AirPort Time Capsule and installed an Asus Mesh WiFi.

At first, I had no idea how was going to back up my MacBook Pro. Then I searched the web and found a very useful article on MacWorld. It explains clearly how to setup the AirPort so it can be connected via Ethernet cable to a computer and function as a Time Machine.

This might be common knowledge to some but I wanted to share is this information for anyone who could use it.

Tech / OS X El Capitan
« on: September 29, 2016, 05:58:48 PM »
I just visited my bank online and noticed something I hadn't seen before.

The bank shows the computer information I'm using in the side bar. But it recognizes my laptop currently running OS X El Capitan as

Is that the name that devolopers use?

Tech / Browser Startup Page
« on: June 06, 2014, 02:13:06 AM »
In the last couple days, my three browser preferences got changed somehow. I use Safari, Firefox and sometimes Chrome. They ALL got changed to startup on the Yahoo search page.

I don't use Yahoo for anything. If I don't use Google search, I use Bing.

This is creeping me out.

Has anyone here had a similar experience?

Tech / Check Your iPhone Data Usage
« on: May 22, 2014, 01:36:38 PM »
Since the last iOS update my iPhone started "automatically" playing music from the Music App when the phone connected to the Bluetooth in my car. I looked into discussions about the problem and found I wasn't the only one who noticed this. I didn't become aware immediately because the music played in the background unless I used the Media Button. The battery started taking a hit due to the app running so I found a way to disable the Music app. It meant I had to turn of Cellular Usage for the Music App and finally deleting the music entirely. With no music to play, I finally silenced the Music App.

The other day I was looking at my AT&T account to change the plan my wife and have. When I looked at my data usage for the past few months it clearly showed a jump in data usage. I hope the steps I took will make a difference.

The image here shows just how much more data usage was logged.

Tech / iCal Event Syncing
« on: July 25, 2013, 10:44:56 AM »
This may have been addressed before but I couldn't find anything in a search.

I use iCloud to keep my computer and iPhone supposedly synced. For the most part, it seems to be working.

Anyway… When I create an iCal event on the iPhone, that event shows up on my computer like it should. When I create an event on the computer, it doesn't get to the iPhone.

I have looked at various discussions on the subject and I have checked my settings over and over to no avail. I'm stumped.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me? I'm too frustrated to keep trying to fix it on my own. wallbash.gif

Tech / Flipped Out Cursor
« on: September 29, 2012, 10:38:24 AM »
Every time I move the cursor over a link while online it starts flickering back and forth between the arrow and the pointing finger. This just started in the past week or so. I ran Disk Utility but the flickering is still happening.
This is happening on my MacBook Pro (mid 2009)
Running OS X 10.8.2

While it doesn't seem to affect the computer in any way, it is distracting.

I just went to the Apple site to check out the discussions when suddenly the cursor is back to normal.  whistling.gif

Never mind…

The topic and description says it all. I haven't been able to get connected here in the Northwest any time today. Is anyone else having problems?

Tech / Strange Message
« on: August 29, 2012, 11:45:23 AM »
I gave up on LibreOffice one or two versions ago. It kept crashing.

Today, a new version showed up on CNET so I decided to give it a try. After installing it and attempting to launch for the first time, I got this message:

Tech / Adobe Photoshop Elements 10
« on: April 19, 2012, 01:13:02 PM »
I was wondering if anyone can tell me whether or not there is a difference between Photoshop Elements 10 that may be purchased directly from Adobe vs the app which Apple has in the app store?

I got an email from Adobe yesterday with an offer to purchase PSE 10 for $50. So, I decided to do it. After all, it was a $30 less than I could get from the app store.

The download took over an hour using my wireless network. I was also surprised how long it took to install the components!
This morning when I started using my computer, it acted possessed. I finally figured out that Adobe Updater was attempting to update the camera raw files. Once that was finished things went back to normal.
Anyway, I'm not all that impressed with PSE yet. It is so different from the last Photoshop application I had on my desktop computer that it will require relearning just about everything. I hope to find some good tutorials online to help negotiate the UI which so foreign to me.

Tech / Install New Hard Drive
« on: April 05, 2012, 11:25:29 AM »
I know this has been discussed before but my search skills in this forum are pretty lame.

I am considering moving to a solid state drive from OWC. They have clear instructions on the installation process, including the purchase of NewerTech's universal drive adapter.

My question: Is this the best way to go about it? I'm wondering about having to buy a $30 adapter that I'll use once. Can a new drive be installed another way?
