Tech / OS 10.6.8 secure browser
« on: December 29, 2018, 12:46:56 PM »
I am looking for a secure browser for my 10 year old iMac running 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).  I know that the browsers I have namely Safari, Chrome, and Firefox are no longer supported. I am not happy that I would need to rectify this with the purchase of a new Mac as this one just runs fine and I would really like to keep it.  Is there a solution such an app or add-on and if so please let me know.

Tech / Importing Itunes to a new iPad
« on: July 05, 2018, 09:18:50 AM »
I have a music library on my iMac running 10.6.8 (yes folks - if it ain't broke don't fix it). I bought a new iPad running ios 11.04.  When I connect the two the imac can see the ipad but says it can't communicate with it. When I open itunes on the imac it does not show the ipad.  Ideas on how I can get these two to communicate with each other?

Thanks, John

Tech / Can't find Photos
« on: February 19, 2017, 08:00:03 AM »
Last night I went to drag and drop a couple of pictures into iphoto. When I opened it, it asked me to choose a library but the list was blank or to create a new library. This morning I have searched my imac to no avail, and on my back up drive, but found no library. Can someone please tell me where to find said libray, or what to do. If necessary I can download all the photos from my camera, but they were organized into various folders and don't want to have to do that again. Looking forward to a solution, thanks, Johan

Tech / Suddenly my iMac freezes
« on: June 06, 2014, 06:22:15 AM »
I have a 2008 24inch iMac running 10.6.8. It has a 2.8 Ghz Core 2 duo processor and 4 GB ram ( maximum). Of a 320 GB hard drive, I am using 49.75 GB. About 2 weeks ago it began to just freeze without any reason.  I have run Techtool Pro and it passed all the tests.  I have used Onyx and DiskWarrior.  It will run all day and then without warning freeze. I have to do a cold start and it will run fine for a while and then freeze again.  BTW, I have not downloaded any software recently, nor updates. Does any one have any ideas/suggestions to resolve this?

Thanks,  Johan

Tech / Which e-reader to buy?
« on: July 31, 2013, 02:50:56 PM »
We just did a major cleaning of our house and donated a couple of hundred books to a local NGO.  I have promised the wife to move from hard copies but I find it so hard to give them up.  So I am looking to buy an e-reader.  I have tried my wife's iPad and I did not find it that difficult but I don't need an iPad just an e-reader.  I want one that can be read outdoors in bright sunlight. I have looked at the Kindle Fire and the Paperwhite but know I'll receive some input/advice here that will be helpful, so I look forward to your comment/suggests.  Thanks, Johan

Tech / MacKeeper Application
« on: February 14, 2011, 09:07:17 AM »
Does anyone know anything about MacKeeper?  I saw it on the internet this morning and tried the freebee but to continue to use it costs $38.95 for a single user. I use ClamXav to check any downloads, run Onyx every couple of months and installed Sophos.  My wife says it's overkill.
Comments please.

Community / Happy Thanksgiving Canada
« on: October 11, 2010, 07:03:38 AM »
Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day (Canadian French: Jour de l'Action de grâce), occurring on the second Monday in October, is an annual Canadian holiday to give thanks at the close of the harvest season. Although the original act of Parliament references God and the holiday is celebrated in churches, the holiday is also celebrated in a secular manner.

Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day, currently celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, has been an annual tradition in the United States since 1863. Thanksgiving was historically a religious observation to give thanks to God.

A very happy thanksgiving to my fellow Canadians.  I won't bore you with the details but I hope you have as much to be thankful for as I do.

And I have every confidence that the Alouettes will avenge the butt kicking they got last week.  Welcome to Molson stadium Calgary.

Tech / iPhoto does not open when camera connected by usb
« on: October 01, 2010, 12:10:47 PM »
I connected my camera (Fujifilm Finepix S1000 fd) this morning by its usb wire. Usually in a couple of seconds iPhoto opens, not today.  I checked the usb hub and it is working.  I checked iPhoto's preferences and it is set: "connecting camera opens iPhoto". When I turn on the camera its usb icon appears on the camera's screen, but nothing happens.  I restarted the computer to no avail.  I opened TimeMachine and restored iPhoto to a couple of weeks ago, still nothing happens.

Any ideas as to what to do. Can I throw out the 2 .plist for iPhoto.?

Thanks,

Johan

Tech / Exporting songs to an Mp3 player.
« on: September 29, 2010, 04:09:54 PM »
I have received a Goodmans GMP32000s 2g Mp3 player.  The manual says that it is not compatible with Macintosh but I am sure there must be a way to export some songs from my iTunes library, I'm using version 9.2.1. I do have Parallels on my iMac so I know that if I need to I can use it but is there a simplier way?

Thanks,

Johan

Community / The Corning Museum of Glass
« on: July 06, 2010, 03:57:07 PM »
I am sitting in a cool  and comfortable hotel room in Painted Point NY.  My wife and I decided to take a quick vacation to visit the Corning Museum of Glass after she finished teaching in June.  Several friends had raved about their visit there and as we are both avid museum and art gallery fans our curiosity was piqued.  I must say that our friends were spot on, it has more than exceeded our expectations.  We were unable to explore/see it all in one day so we are returning tomorrow. So if you are ever in the Corning NY area make sure to visit the Corning Museum of Glass.

BTW, as expected our American hosts have been wonderful. friendly, polite, helpful, gracious, couldn't have a nicer next door neighbour.
