Tech / Re: How to convert to APFS to be able to upgrade OS?
« on: April 25, 2024, 10:56:26 AM »
OK, I think I finally understand the problem. It is not being unable to convert the computers volume to APFS. That was done when you updated to the OS, that was part of the install process whether you saw it or not.

The problem is with Super Duper and is known by that developer. I stopped using SD years ago and have no recent experience with it, so I'll leave the thread. :notworthy:

I agree with Kris, if the choice of "Convert to APFS" is greyed out, that format is already functioning.

However, to answer your question: "And how do I know when I am in Recovery Mode or not?"
In my opinion, always use the complete Shutdown and startup process instead of the "Restart" function.

So:
 1. Shutdown the Mac.
 2. Wait 23 seconds.
 3. Hold down the Command and the "R" key with one hand.
 4. Press the power button with the other hand.
 5. Be patient. Keep the Command and "R" key down.
 6. You will probably see the Apple Logo pop up. However, it may only be brief.
Keep the Command and "R" key down.
 7. You should now see a progress bar. There may not be an Apple logo at this point.
Keep the Command and "R" key down.
 8. The progress bar may only get to about 20%. Keep the Command and "R" key down.
 9. The short progress bar wil be replaced by another progress bar with the Apple Logo.
10. You can now release the Command and "R" key.
11. You will eventually see the following:
   A. A black background screen
   B. A smallish window with a list of four items:
       a. Restore from Time Machine
       b. Reinstall (an operating system)
       c. Safari
       d. Disk Utility
12. Click "Disk Utility" (either with a double-click or just once and then use the "Continue" button)
13. Select any Volume shown.
14. Select The Edit menu and see if the "Convert to AFPS" is allowed.
     A. If it is allowed you can convert that Volume to AFPS.
     B. If that option is greyed out, the Volume is already formatted as AFPS or it is damaged.

If you don't see the steps above through #11, you are NOT in Recovery mode.

I can assume it is a screen on some kind of Mac. :p The important part of my question is the steps you take to get there. Specifically, "Is that the small screen you see after restarting in Recovery Mode". It is critical, when answering questions, to be as specific as possible, particularly when offered links and/or actions to take. John has asked you several questions (#2, #4, #6) but I cannot see any answers to most of them. :wallbash:

I don't know what "screen" you are talking about. Is that the small screen you see after restarting in Recovery Mode?

As they say with lightening; "If you can hear it, it didn't hit you"!
Just watch where you step when outside! Make sure there is not a large crack there.
When inside, try to spend most of your time inside a doorway, that is a very sturdy place!

Apparently quakes do tend to occur in groups. But it can be weeks/months/years between them. And, if they are small enough, only places with seismographs will "notice" them. For example, it took me ~5 days to notice your posts! :blueeek:

Sounds/feels(?) like things have calmed down -|- up there.

Guess I need to double-check my notifications settings... :blush-anim-cl:

2. If you were lazy you wouldn't waste time trying to build Mail's rules. Spamsieve learns more than just the domain name of the sender. It also learns from the words used in the message. It builds much more than a list of sender names or where they come from. The rule you define may not even be used again. :wallbash:

1. What else can you buy for $2.67 a month (last major update price)? And you only pay for major updates (2.x to 3.x) not incremental ones(3.0 to 3.3) Plus, this is a Mac only app. Help support Mac Devs!

I think you answered your own question. There may be some g-mail users here that can help. In the mean time, just set up g-mail to forward all messages to Apple Mail. Done.

Your second question "What the heck is this all about...", it's about how you set up g-mail to require 2-factor ID.

Another clue may have to do with your Mac Prefs: "Files & Folders" and "Full Disk Access". it might help to add g-mail in those settings. Allow Google access to your machine at your own peril.

Personally, most of my contacts with g-mail account are blocked.

Thanx, jON! ☺️

Tech / Re: Captures screen saver...?
« on: February 13, 2024, 06:11:15 PM »
Select "Mojave" (if not already there) at this Apple Support page. It claims there is a 'delay' setting available, probably in the "Options" button:
Quote from: Apple
You can take pictures (called screenshots) or recordings of the screen on your Mac using Screenshot or keyboard shortcuts. Screenshot provides a panel of tools that let you easily take screenshots and screen recordings, with options to control what you capture—for example, you can set a timer delay or include the pointer or clicks.

Perhaps this page at Apple will help. The instructions worked for me in Ventura.

1. Have the Screen Saver item in System Prefs open.
2. Press Shift + Command + 5 to open the screen shot settings details.
3. Set the delay to 10 seconds.
4. Click the "Full Screen" icon.
5. Select the Screen Saver you want to capture.
6. Press the "Preview" button in the Screen Saver Prefs.
7. Wait for the 'captured' sound and press any key to see the tiny, captured image in the lower, right-hand corner of your screen.
8. use your favorite disk/file search app to look for a .png file with a name starting with "Screenshot". It may be right on your Desktop. My testing created a file named:
"Screenshot 2024-02-13 at 10.13.30 AM.png"

Quote from: Apple
Screenshots are saved as .png files and screen recordings are saved as .mov files. Filenames begin with “Screenshot” or “Screen Recording” and include the date and time.
