Tech / Logitech Mouse

I acquired the Logitech M705 from Amazon back in November. It claims a battery life of 3 years. I don't expect it to last that long as I'm a pretty heavy user, but it keeps you posted on the remaining battery life and today it indicates 1040 days remaining. It's a little smaller than I prefer but has all the functions I use...It's a keeper.

2009 / Is there a way to play old VHS tapes into a Mac
« on: December 01, 2009, 02:33:26 PM »
QUOTE(jcarter @ Nov 16 2009, 02:24 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
We have a lot of old VHS tapes, movies, classes, concerts,,,,,that we would like to be able to play on our new large screen Macs. Not the TV.
Is this possible?
Thanks,
Jane

Jane,

I'm a little late with this, but back in 2004 I wanted to do the same thing you're wanting to do and purchased an analog to digital converter (Hollywood Dazzle) and converted a bunch of VHS tapes by connecting them to Dazzle and feeding them to iMovie on my computer. I then was able to edit them to my heart's content.

I no longer have a use for this equipment as I now use a VHS to DVD converter for this king of stuff.

If you haven't resolved your project yet, maybe you'd be interested in taking the Hollywood Dazzle off my hands. It's been in storage now for close to 5 years and for shipping and a pittance you can have it.

2009 / "Sizing" a Winderz partition

I prefer VMWare Fusion over Parallels for a couple reasons. Mainly because it makes 40GB the Windows size vs 32GB made by Parallels. Secondly, it is receptive to more OS versions than Parallels. Operations wise they both do their job well...running either one alongside the Mac OS is much more convenient than using BootCamp, for my purposes.

2008 / Searching across multiple HDs

kbeartx,

I'll repeat my question as cited in my above post.

How do you have the Spotlight System Preference's Privacy set?

What volumes are excluded from being indexed by Spotlight?

Here's the deal:

The G5 has two physical HDs [three virtual disks] and the G4 [connected via ethernet] has four physical HDs [no partitions] for a total of seven logical disks totaling 1,463 GB [~1.5 Terabyte] of storage space.

In the current incarnation of the Search dialog, I don't see how to specify that I want to search everywhere, that is, all seven disks that are locally attached, but not the entire universe [that is, the internet].

Help, trips, ticks, suggestions?

TIA, KB coolio.gif

How do you have the Spotlight System Preference's Privacy set?
Spotlight (as I understand it) has to first index any volume you want included in the search routine.
Make sure any volumes to be searched are not included on the Privacy list. rolleyes.gif

If you go to the User/Pictures/iPhoto Library folder and Right Click the folder and show folder contents, you can then migrate to the picture you want to use by opening the Data folder and selecting the picture. You can open the picture by double clicking and then Save As (Menu Bar/File)...I like to save to the desk top...It is then easy to manipulate and attach to an email.. The Data folder has pictures you can email as is...If you want larger versions, the Originals folder has the same pictures as the Data folder but in their original size and then you can handle them the same way.

Hope this helps,

2008 / Badly messed up MacPro
« on: June 05, 2008, 09:09:09 AM »
Thanks TS'ers for a lot of useful info...I'm a lot better informed now. notworthy.gif

I decided not to wait for the password problem to crop up again. I have three internal HD's and decided to clean one out and start from scratch.
I erased one of them by zeroing all data and installing everything from scratch...Operating system and applications. Whew! Big project.
It's taken me over two days and I'm not finished yet. However, I think in the long run it'll be the best move. I have been installing new OS"s on top of old OS's
for several years now and decided to clean house (so to speak). Even with the last two Macs I've acquired, I just used Target Disk Mode and transferred applications and settings
to the new computers to avoid this hassle.

Anyway my MacPro is humming nicely now and I don't expect a recurrence of the password problem.

Thanks Mayo...especially for the quick response.

I was able to reset things so that I can again select a startup volume...and boot from the install DVD.

I was able to copy a backup system to my main system and this (at least temporarily) allows my Mac to recognize me as an Administrator.
Now if this will just stay put...but probably won't. Somehow I think the problem is in the Leopard OS and keep my fingers crossed that each upgrade will fix the problem. But it hasn't yet.

Since installing Leopard sometime last year, my Mac (for no known reason) has occasionally quit recognizing me as an Administrator and I am unable to perform any computer function that requires an Administrator password. The only recourse has been to reinstall the operating system...I have been able to do this by copying a working backup from another HD.

This happened again this past weekend and I decided to try (again) to reset the administrator password by booting from the install DVD and using Menubar/utilities to make the changes. This time I went a step further and decided to reset the password for the Firmware setting...bad move. When I rebooted and held down the Option key to select the startup volume, I get this:

I can no longer boot from anything except the system I was using when I messed with the password changes.
When trying to use the System Preferences Startup Disk, all volumes are grayed out.
Holding "C" and trying to start from any CD or DVD gets nothing.
Trying to reset PRAM don't work...holding the Command-Option-P&R and restarting results in only one bong and the system starts up.
I even tried to reset the Firmware, but the procedure calls for holding the startup button until the CD/DVD tray opens to receive the Firmware Restore CD. Again all I get is a system startup at the first bong.

Everything seems to work okay as long as I stay within the bounds of a 'User', but nothing works that needs administrator approval.

Obviously I need some expert help. I have held off calling my nearest Apple store (40 odd miles away) until I've exhausted all other options.

2008 / Site to test pages on IE

My classmates need a site that you can test your pages on IE, because we dont have IE for Mac any more.
I can go over to my dentist's office, but that is a pain.
Jane

IE 5.2.3 still is available for Macs.
You can get git here: http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Internet-Util...-Explorer.shtml

I have found that TechTool Pro will rebuild directories that DiskWarrior won't.
Then afterwards DW can rebuild them.

Success! clap.gif
The original modem was an Ethernet modem and couldn't possibly connect to a phone line. It had an RJ-45 connector plug and the phone line has an RJ-11 connector. The smaller RJ-11 actually seemed to connect okay, but all it did was disable the phone service. Took me a while to sort all this out.

I contacted the place I got the computer from and they graciously provided me with two PCI modems (no charge). The first one I tried wouldn't work...it wasn't compatible with Windows XP...but the second one worked okay.

So now for only $60 and a lot of my time (not worth a whole lot), my sister has a fairly fast PC (800 MHz) that she can use for email and web surfing. She had been trying to use my first Mac...an old Performa 6200 (75MHz). It just plain flat wouldn't work...The browser's home page would never finish loading when trying to connect to the web.

Thanks Dick.....

The PC is/was a discarded 800 MHz Gateway with no HD or monitor.

I put a 200GB Seagate in it... at first the installation CD I tried could not be seen by the PC. Later I tried a different installation CD and it worked, although I had preformatted the HD as Fat 32 (or whatever) and after installing the Windows system, it wouldn't work. Then, from the installation disk, I reformatted the HD to NTSC (or whatever)...this took a long time (about 2 hours) and another hour for the system to install...and it worked!!

Now I'm in the process of trying to get internet dialup to work. Plugging a phone line into the PC gets nothing but a disabled phone system.

Knowing practically nothing about PC's, and suspecting a bad modem (a 3COM internal), I called the place I got the PC and was told that the modem might be bad but it was probably in need of a Driver for the modem.

So, I removed the modem (to get model#, etc.) and downloaded Drivers from the 3COM site to my Mac, made a disk image and burned it to a CD-RW. Next step is to see if the PC will see my CD-RW and if I can install the Drivers from it. The 3COM site gave a very complicated sounding procedure for making an installation CD, but I'm a Mac man and things aren't nearly as complicated with a Mac.

And excuse me for seeking PC help here...I just don't really want to go to a PC forum and I know a lot of TS'ers have a PC connection.

Wish me luck,
Clay

I'm trying to make an old PC (acquired without a HD) produce again.
I have several IDE HD's and elected to use one of them in the PC (Micro ATX Professional V800 is the description on its name plate).
I haven't been able to make the PC work and wondered if I should prepare the HD in some way to get it to be seen by the PC.
I have the feeling that the problem is not the HD, but need some reinforcement.
Trying to boot the PC from a Windows installation disk does not work.

So I decided to hear from the helpful TS folks.

Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

2007 / How To Reformat an SD Card?
« on: June 08, 2007, 07:08:21 AM »
QUOTE(RHPConsult @ Jun 7 2007, 02:12 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
The family “project” that generated my now-resolved PSE3 query yesterday, has produced some additional fallout that is equally puzzling. . . perhaps more so.  Here.

This task with our scanned photos has two goals: a PowerPoint slide show for a 90 birthday celebration planned for my son-in-law's grandmother AND putting those same photos in a digital picture frame for her to enjoy after the party is over.

Now, here’s the really curious bump in that road, for me at least. My daughter has assembled and prepared about 150 pics for display in the frame. I started last evening to load them on a 2-GB Kingston SD card. However, “it’ (the card) stopped receiving at about 90 (roughly 15 MB worth) declaring that insufficient “free space” was available for loading more! Oh yeah, only 1,950 MB, I would estimate, remaining to be used. Those 90 displayed quite nicely, however, when we tested them.

Since this SD card has been used before in other devices, I am assuming that the card probably needs to be formatted, to somehow "recover" the missing capacity. But . . .

Question 1:  Why would/did the card balk at swallowing such a tiny portion of its recognized/declared capacity?

Question 2:  How does one reformat an SD card? The Brookstone digital picture fame has no built-in mechanism to accomplish such an action, that I can find. When the card's icon appears on my desktop (in my ZIO multi-card reader), of course, there is the possibility of erasing the tiny “drive” in DiskUtility, but what about re-formatting? Is that some kind of a generic process, so to speak, as far as anyone knows, that DisUtility can accomplish with ease? I certainly don’t want to render the card unusable for the picture frame. It seems like a no-brainer, but I’ve gotten in trouble in the past believing such things!!

Help, again!  Please.

Dick,
Have you tried putting the card in a camera and reformatting it?
Seems like I remember having problems with a SD card I had erased on my computer and the camera format straightened it out.
Just a thought,
Clay
