Tech / Re: Magic Track pad wont connect
« on: April 28, 2025, 07:14:03 PM »
1. Is this the 4½" x 6" pad?
2. Does it show in the Bluetooth menu? It should show the battery charge, even if it's 0%.
3. Does there appear to be any corrosion on the internal battery contacts?
4. Is the Tee-niney little switch is ON? You may not have that on yours.
5. Is there any kind of USB cable attached? Be sure it is all the way in.
6. Have you tried another cable?

Please update your hardware/software list in your signature.

According to this Bugzilla forum post, Apple has fixed the problem in macOS 15.2:

Just tried SM 2.53.19 on OSX 15.2 (24C101) with Darwin 24.2 and can confirm that this issue is no longer present.

Have you updated Sequoia to 15.2?

An aside: I don't think you need to type the "% " (the percent sign and a space) for that command. In my Terminal screen, those automatically appear as the prompt from zsh awaiting my input.
Another aside (the other side? :p): not sure you actually switched to zsh. You report seeing "-bash" in your output. Did "bash" also appear in the window title bar?
When you open a Terminal window, it should include the name of the shell you are using (bash, zsh, csh, tsch, etc.). Apple's Terminal will also show your Admin name and the boot drive name in the windows title bar. That bar will also show the size of the window, assuming you have that selected in its Settings.
My prompt line shows:"xairbusdriver@New-iMac ~ % []". Note the space on either side of the "~" and the "%". The "[]" is my attempt to show the blinking red block cursor where my typing will appear. That cursor is controlled by what display choice is selected in the left-hand column of the Settings->Profiles->Text tab>"Cursor" (Block, Underline or Vertical Bar, a "Blink" checkbox and a color selector).

Don't have Sequoia yet, don't have anything that requires it. :notworthy: Hopefully, the folks at Mozilla will have already heard about this problem. :Devilish:
If you got a Terminal script from Seamokey devs, I would not be afraid to use it. Perhaps you could post that text here?

From what I hear, Sequoia's System "Prefs" is even more like that function in iOS. That means it is much less user-friendly and most of us end up using its Search function to find what we need. :wallbash:

However, I suspect the Dock connection to Seamonkey may get fixed if you can just get the app to simply run/open. You might find help by using the "Files & Folders" and/or the "Full Disk Access" functions. Be aware that these are the titles/settings (there are no more "System 'Prefs'!) in Ventrura (13.x) Sequoia may have changed those titles just to keep users on their toes! :coolio: :p

I use ClamX AV and it runs once a day. Helps detect/remove files that generate these messages. Also run DetectX Swift (free) occasionally.

Of course, SpamSieve learns and takes care of bogus emails. Just taught it another phisher today "warning" me that my iCloud file space was full! :coolio: :whistling:

Tech / Re: How to transfer apps to new Mac?
« on: April 07, 2025, 09:33:57 AM »
First, I don't have recent experience using Migration Assistant, it's been several years; last time I bought a new Mac. However, I suspect MA will not be helpful in this case.

Based on the Apple Support and Forum pages I see, MA is designed for OS transfers/updating. It only offers a catch-all "Other Files & Folders" opition for stuff that is not important OS files.

You want to transfer only a limited number of items, correct?

As I understand it, you want to "I transfer my 3 Adobe apps and a few others". I'd suggest just using the standard 'drag-n-drop' copying. The problem I would fear is that Adobe won't allow/like that method. :wallbash:

Tech / Re: disable Mission control on Mojave...??
« on: March 30, 2025, 06:44:22 PM »
Are you using an Apple Keyboard?
Does it have a row of function keys?
Does the F3 key have a group of small outlines of three or four small rectangles? (see second image below
Theoretically that F3 key opens Mission Control. Are you pressing that key accidentally?

This Apple Support page (see attached image and be sure to select your OS ) describes how to turn Mission Control ON/OFF.

You should also check what you have set for "Hot Corners".
Quote
On your Mac, choose Apple menu-> System Preferences, click Desktop & Screen Saver icon, then click Screen Saver.
1. Click Hot Corners.
2. Click the pop-up menu for the corners you want to use, choose Start Screen Saver, then click OK.
Check the pop-up menu to see if "Mission Control" is an option for one or more corners.

Essentially, if you can find any of these methods for turning Mission Control ON/OFF, try to avoid any of those key(s). If it is one of the Hot Corners, change that corner to "-" or some other choice.

Are you saying that you typed something like "mission control" (with or without the quotation marks) in your favorite search engine and you did NOT get a single "hit"?! :blueeek: I have 9 hits, on my first page of results  (without even using "mac"). That's using Search in the DuckDuckGo browser, which does not have the most highly developed search engine around.

I suggest using any result that points to "Apple Support" since those pages usually have an OS picker allowing you to select your OS. The page I found that discusses Mission Control shows that feature has been around at least since High Sierra! :WOW:

Just my opinion but I've found that the more items you include in a search, the fewer results you usually get. Of course, if you think you already know an important key word, include that by all means.

As I said before, it appears that it must be turned on, however the OS does it. So, to avoid it being a nuisance, don't turn it on. :no2: :nono: :wallbash:

I’ve never seen a use for that “feature” but looking at the details at Apple, there seem to be four different ways to turn it ON/OFF. Perhaps a search at Apple Support would suffice? Interweb search is your friend! :coolio:

A mechanic, a programmer and an engineer are driving in the mountains. Going down a steep hill they realise the brakes cannot slow, much less, stop the car. They miraculously miss all traffic, make all the curves and eventually stop at the bottom of the hill.

The mechanic says he needs to take the brake system apart and fix whatever is broken.

The engineer says the brakes are oviously too small for the car and need to be redesigned.

The programmer says "We just need to push the car up the hill and see if the failure happens again"!

Tech / Re: Can i work off my EHD instead of my iMac?
« on: January 17, 2025, 10:46:28 PM »
You can certainly run your old iMac from an external drive. However, booting will probably be slower, even if the drive is faster than your internal drive. Your file access will be slower than the internal hard-wired buss speed. Still, that slower speed will only be seen/felt when opening/closing a file, assuming you don't shutdown/startup more than once a day. :)

What types of ports do you have on that Mac?

I had a 2017(?) mac Mini that I added an internal SSD. It already had the wiring/port for a second drive and i could do the minor work (required a screw driver!) myself. I then installed the OS and all upgrades to that SSD. Booting and working from that SSD was amazing! That's why new machines don't even include hard drives anymore. I suppose you could find a tech who could add an internal SSD to your iMac for a price. You might even take a look at iFixIt for instructions on doing that on your own.

I have not read os getting a M version Mac to run an old OS version unless you install some virtual OS crutches software. You may notice that there is no longer a "10" in front of the newest Apple operating systems. "10.x" is no longer supported. I only at macOS13.7.2, but the latest is 15.x! :sweatingbullets:

I'm a bit confused as to what macOS your "old" mac is running Sonoma. You said "My old iMac has OS10.14.6". I assume that is running Intel CPUs. Is that correct?

Any "new" mac will have the new "Apple Silicon" (M4) and should have Sequoia (15.x) installed.

You can boot Sequoia off external drives:
Apple Support page
Apple insider

I am assuming that the older Adobe software only runs on Intel chips. Is that correct?
In that case. Installing Sequoia on an external drive won't help: The M4 can't run the old Adobe software. I don't think it can run an older macOS (14.6, Sonoma) either.
