Tech / Big Sur newbie
« on: August 26, 2021, 02:32:14 PM »
I finally installed Big Sur (Version 11.5.2) today, and I now have two major issues:
----------

I cannot start up from an external drive. I made the mistake of cloning my internal drive to both of my externals without checking first to see if everything works. (I know, dumb thing to do!)

When I go to System Preferences>Startup Disk, it says “Select the system you want to use to start up your computer” just as always.

But it shows only the internal drive, no external drives.

How can I start up from an external?
---------

I use Microsoft Office extensively (Subscription Version 16.52).

When I check for updates, it says “You do not have permission to open the application ‘Microsoft AutoUpdate’.”

How can I check for MS updates?
-----

Any and all suggestions are welcome!

Tech / Strange printer problem
« on: August 16, 2021, 07:39:20 PM »
I have a good friend (Mac user) who lives across the hall from me at an assisted living facility (CrownPointe). We have free internet service (CrownPointemain), so he wants to disconnect from AT&T wireless to save money. Here is a brief description of his printer problems:

Am able to print from my iMac desktop computer to my Canon MX-922 printer when using CrownPointemain system.
Am unable to print from my iPad to the Canon MX-922 printer when using Crownpointemain system.
Am able to print from my iPad to the Canon MX-922 printer when on my AT&T router: ATTUNhB7i2
I would like to print from both (desktop and iPad) to Canon MX-922 printer using Crownpointemain only and discontinue ATT for cost reasons.

I have been unable to help him resolve this situation. If anyone out there wants to help, please email me a message here (My Messages) and I will send detailed info about his setup. Thanks to all.

Community / Good exercise
« on: February 19, 2021, 12:28:43 PM »
I read somewhere that stretching is good exercise. At age 90, I totally agree. Here's the drill:
1. Stretch out flat on your back in your La-Z-Boy.
2. Stretch a blanket over your body.
3. Stretch your eyelids down over your eyeballs.
4. Hold this position at least 20 minutes at a stretch.
5. Repeat once or twice daily.

You're welcome!

Tech / Creating envelopes in MS Office 365
« on: June 30, 2020, 05:05:32 PM »
Help!

I installed MS Office 365 a few days ago, and I have yet to figure out how to create and print a one-off business-size (No. 10) mailing envelope. I do not want to use Mail Merge or a Contacts database. The techniques I have used previously (for more than 30 years) do not give me the desired results. Word's Help menu, MS Chat, and YouTube how-to videos have not been helpful.

Can someone please give me step-by-step instructions? I am baffled.

Thanks!

Tech / Excel files opened in Numbers
« on: June 06, 2020, 11:27:19 AM »
Sooz's thread prompts me to post this for information only, not for advice. But comments are welcome.

A few days ago, a strange thing happened when I double-clicked an Excel file to open it. It opened in iWork's Numbers application. I have never used Numbers and have no desire to do so. I tried other Excel files and the same thing happened. To fix the problem I simply trashed the entire iWork folder out of the Applications folder. I will not miss iWork, and my Excel files now open correctly.

Tech / LibreOffice
« on: January 26, 2019, 04:03:24 PM »
Anyone out there using LibreOffice? I have been to their website and I am impressed.

I use MS Office 2008 and MS keeps bugging me to upgrade. I need only one copy, and I am not keen on their subscription model. I use Word and Excel extensively, but none of the other MS Office applications other than occasionally reading a PowerPoint presentation.

My concerns:
1. What is the learning curve? I am 88 years old and have used MS Office for over 30 years.
2. Do LibreOffice documents have a similar "look and feel" to those created with MS Office?
3. How easy is it to convert my MS documents to LibreOffice?
4. Does LibreOffice allow for embedding charts into spreadsheets?
5. Can MS Office users import my LibreOffice documents?
6. Are there other office suites as good or better than LibreOffice?

Any and all responses are welcome. Please help. Thanks!

Tech / Printer died
« on: January 10, 2017, 06:58:53 PM »
I use two printers, a laser for everyday black & white, and an inkjet for the occasional color and/or photo printing.

Would welcome your suggestions for a replacement inkjet (make and model) that will print, copy, scan, and do photos. Duplexing is not really necessary.

Must admit being partial to HP, since an engineer son worked in HP's imaging division for 20 years, but will welcome glowing recommendations for other brands.

Gracias, amigos!

Tech / What does this mean?
« on: December 04, 2016, 04:19:19 PM »
I wanted to start up from a Carbon-Copy-cloned external drive.

It did not start up, but a circle with an arrow-pointed lightning bolt through it jerked its way diagonally across the screen.

I powered down, then powered up again. I am running on that external drive now and can detect no problems.

My guess is that this external drive may be beginning to fail.

Your thoughts?

Thanks!

Tech / Downloading Facebook posts
« on: September 19, 2016, 09:45:11 AM »
My question is "How can I download and store all of the comments from a Facebook post when there are a very large number of comments?"

You may have read recently about Ben Ellis, a teacher in Nashville who passed away from cancer last week.  A few days before he died, the entire student body from his school sang for him outside his window.  A video of their singing "went viral" after it was re-posted by country singer Tim McGraw.  According to his Facebook page, the video has been viewed 32 million times, and has over 48,000 comments.

The reason I'm asking is that Mr. Ellis' mother Colleen is a good friend of ours.  She asked if I could find a way to download and save the comments so she can read every single one.  The comments are wonderful and have been a source of comfort to her.

I have been able to download the first 5000 comments using the Facebook Graph API Explorer.  I did them 500 at a time and then cut and pasted them to a Word file.  But when I try to go past comment 5000, I get an error message.  I don't know if this is a hard limit in Facebook or if there's a way around it.  A little Googling suggests others have been able to access comments beyond 5000, but I can't see how to do it.

I think you can view the post at
https://www.facebook.com/TimMcGraw/videos/10154563454093556/

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

EC 10.11.1 seems to have resolved all my issues.

AND I can now use TechTool Pro 8 again. TT  8.0.3 works flawlessly with EC!

Tech / Do people really bite

Answered a phone call at noon today. A recorded foreign-sounding male voice said, "Your computer is sending us a warning. Press one to speak to a Microsoft certified engineer."

I hung up without saying anything.

Wife and I watched the Seattle Seahawks beat the Denver Broncos last night. We watch the Broncos for two reasons—we like Peyton Manning and we have relatives in Colorado. We’re on Comcast cable and they carry the local (Indianapolis) CBS affiliated station.

I was watching in the living room and my wife was watching in the kitchen. The play-by-play audio commentary on my TV was in English, but hers came through in Spanish (except for the commercials, which were in English). Her TV has a “Language” setting, which was set to English. When the game went into overtime, the play-by-play was in English!

Can any TSer offer an explanation?

Tech / Well, I got caught
« on: September 19, 2014, 10:27:44 AM »
I bragged here recently that I always accept everything Software Update gives me, and that I never have any problem.

I installed Safari 7.1 yesterday. Then last night I went to investors.com (as I do every night after the markets close), and could not get into their Screen Center. I tried again this morning and still could not get in.

Installed Google Chrome and was able to get the data I needed from investors.com

Mea culpa

Joe
