Oh, what a bummer!  I got a really severe ankle sprain August 1, torn tendons, and summer for me ground to a halt, except for swimming and kayaking. Damn thing still hurts nasty sometimes.

Hope you get over yours quicker, if they give you a boot to wear, do wear it. It was too hot for me to wear mine, and it takes longer to heal.
Jane

Thanks ! They didn't give me a boot, just wrapped it in gauze, with an ace bandage over that. They did give me a shoe, that looks like a big Velcro-fastened sandal. I got rid of that doctor (lots of reasons) and got a new one, who I will be seeing on Monday. I'm anxious to find out if it is healing well. I only broke one bone, the 5th metatarsal, so maybe I should consider myself lucky.

If I was to take a guess, I think maybe this is what she purchased at RS.  Looks to me like a "router/modem" that connects to Sprint's G3 network.  Learn something every day.

Good guess, but this is what I bought:  http://www.virginmobileusa.com/shop/mobile...broadband-2-go/

Once again, I did this in the complete absence of any recommendations (not just from here, from anyone) so I had to take the RS guy's suggestion. Perhaps something else would have worked better.

I do not have a smart phone, and I have no internet connection with my cell phone.

Who is bringing the Internet into your house? Who is your Internet service provider? It will be one of three ways; Cable TV company, the phone company (DSL) or regular (but extremely slow) dial-up. Even if you are using a cell phone service, it didn't "go away" simply because you changed the computer.

I haven't been here for a long time, but I must say that I am somewhat surprised at your tone. For internet access we have Verizon FiOS, which is not DSL, nor Cable TV, nor dial-up. Before the G4 went bust, FiOS provided internet access for all 3 of our computers, and they set up a wifi network for us at the same time we were connected. I needed to be able to use my laptop in other parts of the house, away from the modem and without an ethernet cable. Our cell phone provider is Sprint, and we do not have internet access on our cell phones. None of this is actually relevant to the problem of finding a way to have a personal hotspot outside of the house, and nowhere near a public wifi network. I have managed to accomplish this, but I have no idea if any other way is possible.

Contrary to what I was told at Radio Shack and at my initial setup (and I asked very specific questions), the Virgin Mobile techies later told me that I probably am not getting 3G at the zip code where the school is located. Hence...the video stream keeps getting interrupted.

I have a little different take:    I understand her to say she has a working wi-fi pc, which she uses at home on her ISP network, she can also use it when out and about at free wi-fi hotspots.  Her place of employment will NOT allow her to get on Their wi-fi network

What she is attempting to accomplish is the ability to get on the internet at work by creating her own wi-fi hotspot at work separate from theirs.  ie: "Francine's network".

......................................................................
Sorry for the confusion.

Your different take is correct. I think part of the problem is that you guys didn't understand what a "transport nurse" does. I travel in the school bus between the Bronx and Westchester with a disabled child to her school in the AM, and then later I accompany her home in the school bus. In between, there is something like 5 hours. The school does not make wifi available for anyone but the directors. I don't think there are many people working for that school who are over 35, and they all have smartphones, so I guess this doesn't matter much to them.

Before the accident, I used to go to other places and other towns in Westchester County, NY to use free wifi networks, like libraries, Panera and Starbuck's. But now I am stuck sitting in the cafeteria of this school for "special" children, b/c I am supposed to stay off my feet. I am the sort of person who likes to walk around a lot and explore, so this is quite frustrating. But at least if I have internet access, it isn't so bad.

Today was the first day using my "personal hotspot." I DO have internet access on my laptop PC with this little device, manufactured for Virgin Mobile, and a month's worth of wifi service. This actually creates a wireless network just for me, wherever I am. The trouble is...I can't get a stable connection when viewing streaming videos, which are part of a school assignment. This mobile wifi is more like a dialup connection, to tell the truth, although it's supposed to be 3G. But it's still better than NO internet.

I posted here b/c I know you guys, and there are a lot of people here with technical knowledge far beyond mine, even though my G4 is presently not operational, and technically I am not right now a Mac user. It seems that most people don't know much about how to set up a personal wifi hotspot, and this surprises me. I only knew that it was possible. My sister sent me all sorts of links she found by googling "mobile wifi," to different kinds of devices, and I got mad at her, b/c she wasn't really giving me any kind of recommendation. The slick salesman at Radio Shack told me that those devices were routers, and that I didn't need them to set up a wifi hotspot. But who knows?

I'm assuming you don't have cable TV/Internet?

That's certainly the cheapest (after paying for the Internet service, of course). You just plug an Ethernet cable into the cable modem and into an Airport or other brand WiFi transmitter. No extra monthly charges.

It sounds like what Verison wants to do is "give" you a 3G reciever/WiFi modem. That would work but would be limited to that speed. Of course, that's still many times dialup speed. But that is still an expensive monthly charge.

There probably are dongles that can connect to the computer but if they are with any phone company you will basically be considered getting phone service, thus the monthly fees and probably fairly low bandwidth allowances. Make sure you get all the possible charges before signing up for anything!!

DSL is another option that should be faster than cellular service. But you need to be within 10,000'feet of the switch and you'd stillmhave to buy an Airport or Linksys WiFi box.

.....................................................

Thanks for the reply...I have to admit I don't understand it, but thanks anyway.

I have wifi at my place and my mom's place. What I've been looking for is how to get mobile wifi when I'm out of the house, and can't go anyplace like Panera or Starbucks where they have free wifi. Ordinarily I could, but I won't be able to go anywhere for a while, not with this broken foot. It's a long story...I work as a transport nurse right now, and will be stuck at the school, which will not allow wifi access for anyone but administrators.

bonsai.gif

Since I didn't hear from anyone, I went to Radio Shack today and bought some kind of device made by Virgin Mobile, with a month's service prepaid. I will be setting it up tomorrow. The manager at the store assured me that having my own mobile wifi wouldn't interfere with the existing ones at my place or mom's...it will just show up in the list of wireless networks and I will click to connect. I hope he's right. Anyway...I won't need this for more than a month or two, tops. If it works, I could get accustomed to having my own wifi hotspot really fast, if I could afford it, which I can't.

Hi guys,
I have not been on Techsurvivors for a long time. My G4 has gone bust and I will have to investigate the cause, but this is not why I'm posting today.

I'm currently using a PC, an HP Mini laptop. I have been using known hotspots for wifi when out of the house, but I BROKE MY FOOT last Friday. So I have to investigate getting a "personal wifi," as I will not be able to ambulate beyond the one location where I am working, and where there is no available wifi.

The deal with Verizon, my carrier at home, is too expensive. I have been told that the wifi device (a modem, I guess) is nearly $200, and I can get a month's worth of wifi service for $50.

Apparently there are wifi cards, modems, or USB plugs which can enable me to receive wifi, sold by carriers other than Verizon. These seem to be very inexpensive, and of course there would be a monthly charge.

I cannot afford to buy the $200 Verizon device, nor can I afford a long-term contract with them for personal wifi. Does anyone here know which other carriers are reputable, and will really supply a "hotspot" for me? I don't have a smartphone, and I will have no other means of accessing the internet without some sort of setup as I have described.

Please don't tell me to go online and look up the carriers and devices...that was what my sister did, and of course is no help at all. I need a recommendation. Thanks!!!

2009 / "Gimp" Printer Driver for HP D4360
« on: May 09, 2009, 10:13:53 AM »
Hi guys,

I have OS 10.3.9 with a 2001 version of MS Office and  I can't afford to buy an update.

My Epson 820 went kaput so I bought an HP D4360, which prints beautifully in OS X but not in Classic. I've heard of something called a "gimp printer driver" but is this available for Classic (OS 9.2)?

Has anyone found an HP D4360 driver that I can specifically use for Classic?

Thanks,
Francine

This is from Slashdot:

QUOTE
"It looks like for the moment at least, all Google results are failing the malware checks and being listed with a warning 'This site may harm your computer,' including all pages from Google themselves. Users trying to visit pages at search results will only be able to proceed via manual manipulation of the search result link to remove the Google click-through (which is also broken). Until Google fixes this bug, it looks Google web search is useless."

That thread has comments but no other information!

Thanks. But I can't believe that there really is malware on every web site a Google search brings up. No one could possibly be that diabolically efficient so as to infect them all.

I was right the first time - Google is nuts (or their software is f*&^%$d...!)

I am wondering why the Hawaii airwaves went digital one month earlier than the rest.

I can't find the article right now, but it had to do with an endangered bird that nests near some towers that have to come down. At least that's what I think I remember.

Is there any way to get Widgets to work on Panther? I see some very useful ones.

I do have a few widgets, actually. Yahoo widgets work on Panther but all the rest specify OS 10.4 or higher

2009 / How to use Mail
« on: January 22, 2009, 07:41:43 AM »
Thanks, Paddy - the situation is now a bit less murky. notworthy.gif

Here's the story:
Since I upgraded to Panther I haven't had a working email client app on my Mac; I just use webmail. Sometimes the Yahoo servers go down, and this scares me. I can't use Outlook Express anymore, as it was constantly breaking down and apparently isn't supported for OS X.

The necessary task:
I would like to archive my Yahoo messages to an email client that is physically on my computer.

w/re to mac.com, I must have put data in when prompted at the time I did a system upgrade. I never paid for it, and you've given me an explanation for the repeated prompt...!

So - Is there a free email client you can recommend? If so, what will I need to do? What information, if any, will I need from my ISP to set this up?

But Francine, you said that you had an email account "already set up" - a Mac.com account. Is this the account you're trying to use? If you don't PAY for Mac.com, you don't HAVE a Mac.com account, and when Mail attempts to retrieve mail for you using this address, it doesn't work - no matter how many times or in what way you fill in the password. It uses both the user id and the pw to connect to the mac.com/me.com mail server and they have to belong to a real, working account. It's trying, but there is no account, so it re-prompts you for the PW, in case that's incorrect.

If you DO have a Mac.com/MobileMe account, please let us know. The settings for that are here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2296 (You are supposed to be able to use 10.3.9 for mail with MobileMe - though it doesn't appear that way in this set of instructions!)

Now, if it's some OTHER email account that you're trying to use, you have to set it all up, using your ISP's info/directions, not something you already have in there with mac.com info.

So what, exactly, are you attempting to do? What email addy, what ISP? huh.gif
