Community / RIP.....RHPCONSULT
« on: December 04, 2019, 04:27:42 PM »
It is with a good deal of sadness that I inform TS members of the passing of RHPConsult, one of the founding members of TS.
Richard had been ill and in failing health for sometime. His daughter Anne posted to FB that he passed today.

I never met the man in person, but had many, many FaceTime or Skype conversations over our long internet friendship, often as not including George Higgins. In the earlier days he would call me on his travels to Hawaii to ‘rub it in’ as I sat here in Minnesota in the dead of winter.  He was a great friend, smart, funny, and always willing to help someone with a problem, or looking to solve one of his own here on TS.
I will miss him. :whoosh: :verysad:

Tech / Semi-technical iTunes / iBooks problem.
« on: September 21, 2016, 10:02:21 PM »
I buy a goodly number of iBooks on my iPad thru iTunes. (Got a $50 iTunes card in their book pricing settlement). I am currently reading a series of Midieval English mysteries written in the 1980-90s. There are about 22 books in the series. I like to read them in sequence for the character/plot development.

My "problem" is that Apple, in its vast wisdom, has priced one book in the middle of the series at more than 2X the price of the rest of the books in the series.  YES, I can buy it else where on the net for the usual price range.  But being anal, I would prefer to have them all in my iTunes library....

My "real" problem is that I am unable to locat any area of Apple Support that even remotely looks like a place whence I might mightily vent my spleen and demand something be done about this great error so I can get on with my literary life.

Any pointing of fingers in a proper direction would be greatly appreciated...

Not to put too fine a point on it.... But from very personal experience, I know those to be African Geese, you can tell by the hard high bump on their forehead.  Some of the quickest and meanest of fowl.
My maternal grandmother raised them for many years, first as hatchlings at her home in the small village where they lived in MN. When they were of sufficient size they were moved to 'the farm' just outside the village, all of 15 acres. It was my assigned duty to water the beasties twice a day, more if it was hot.
It didn't matter, goose or gander, if they took a dislike to you, they would put their heads down low to the ground moving it from side to side like a Cobra, hiss, flap their wings, and chase you for as long as you were in sight. Mean buggers and quick to nip at a boy's bare legs, while he was encumbered with pails full of water. I truly have first hand knowledge of the term 'goosed'.
Maybe that is why I've never felt bad having a Thanksgiving or Christmas goose.
Seems I recall one of our far northern members saying 'revenge is a dish best served cold' or, at least, as left overs.

Tech / Problem with Sophus software.
« on: May 26, 2015, 03:17:44 PM »
Evidentially Sophus software (if you have it on your system) is putting out a bogus error message / lockout indicating that there is malware on the TS site.

Paddy has contacted our host site support, they have run a check with their malware checker and find no such problem.
If you encounter this message/lockout, just turn off/ disable the Sophus software on your system and continue on accessing the site.
A Small Orange has suggested that Sophus be contacted for a "do over" check and a report of what THEIR problem is with the TS site.

Tech / External HDD falls off my computer desk top...
« on: October 05, 2014, 11:32:47 AM »
None of my other 'disk fixer' utilities can 'see' it. Only the system disk utility can find it.  That says it needs to be initialized and reformatted... I do have a Super Duper back up running also so I'm not greatly worried...but would like to have both.

Is it worth trying to fix and initialize and start over as the TM backup, or toss and get something new?

All thoughts appreciated.

Tech / Repeating emails
« on: June 09, 2014, 10:11:49 PM »
Suddenly today we are receiving repeating emails from a number of sources ( including TS).
These arrive every 10-15 minutes, and are (or appear to be) an exact duplicate of the original. These are sent to our 'primary' email addy. This occurs to a random selection, but not all, of our inbound emails.
NO new software has been installed or updated in the past 4-5 days. We are using Apple's email on all affected platforms.

Any ideas or suggestions as to where to look would be much appreciated.

Just wondering who lost or recently cut down a pine tree... as I'm quite certain that a pine of that size didn't grow horizontally.
Could it be that 'things' are being 'cleaned up' in NJ??

Inquiring minds....

I do like the picture, with the moss and pitch...

Tech / Recent run of 'unluckyness'
« on: January 31, 2012, 04:10:09 PM »
So, OK, my karma has failed once again...

iChat has gone kaflooy on me....

I know that the camera works OK as I also have Facetime (just because it came free, Jim) and I can see my smiling visage through the camera on the screen.
I have dumped the iChat plist and 'lock' what ever as suggested in a Mac user community thread I stumbled on.
iChat will 'start up' and run, but as soon as I try to call someone or someone tries to call me (Thank You, George) it craps out.
I have sent numerous logs to Apple, but we all know how long that will take and what good it will do...

Am not a great systematic checker of things.  Try this, try that, is more my style...
If anyone has a good list of other things to try I would welcome them... EVEN THE OBVIOUS, Paddy....

Did notice one 'strange' thing... When I open/start iChat my wife's name appears where mine normally would be at the top of the Buddy list???
But the accounts in the pref screen all 'appear' to be correct....

Bob K.   rnkiii  Also just noticed that my profile is way out of date, even though I am sure I just changed it in the last day or so?!??!

Tech / Data movement between computers
« on: January 01, 2012, 07:58:28 AM »
I know about Migration Assistant and Target Disk Mode, etc, etc...

BUT.... my problem comes in that the Old iBook only has FW400 and or USB and or Ethernet ports
New MBP has FW800 and or USB and or Ethernet and or ThunderBolt ports.

AND... my selection of cables, though wide, does not include a FW400 to FW800 crossover ...

IS there a way I can use Migration Assistant with this assortment of ports/cables???

Bob K.   rnkiii

Just thought... Old iBook is SD backed up to an external HDD with all sorts of ports..  Could I make sure that Old iBook is backed up current and then use external to affect data movement to new MBP via FW800??

RATS...  SD backup HDD is only USB or FW400. NO JOY there!!

Just thought this might be of interest to some members of the TS community..... of a 'certain' age bracket.

I am in the final stage of selecting / fitting a new set of hearing aids.

They are manufactured by Widex and I can only sum up my reaction to them as "WOW!!"
My hearing loss is described as  'severely / profoundly' limited in both ears, the right more so than the left.  These will be the 3rd set of hearing aids I have had over the approx. 12 years that I have had assistance with my hearing.  I have been to both my local audiologist and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester for exams / tests and MRIs for possible tumors (negative). I began with 'in the ear' models by Odicon and then later progressed to 'behind the ear' models from GN Resound to the current mini-'behind the ear' model from Widex.

These from Widex communicate with each other via a proprietary, Blue-tooth like signal, they also communicate with the 'steamer' that I wear in the same manor. I don't NEED to wear the streamer but it is handy for connecting to blue-tooth devices around me and for other 'adjustments' I can make on the fly.  This proprietary signal is significantly faster than blue-tooth and eliminates the possibility of an 'echo effect' in the hearing.  It is also significantly shorter in broadcast range, measured in inches/feet. The communication between the 2 aids allows for balancing the sounds presented to my ears in a wide variety of noise conditions. The streamer can be 'paired' via blue-tooth with my cell phone, iMac, iPad, and iPod Touch, so that I can hear the phone conversation and/or music via my hearing aids in a VERY clear and balanced manner.  Something I have NEVER been able to do with any of my other aids.  Widex also provides a 'gadget' that is plugged into the audio jacks of my tv, so I can listen to that in the same manner without having to 'blast' the rest of the listeners out of the room to hear.  I can also, via the streamer, direct the microphones in my hearing aids to seek out sounds forward, left, right, or behind me for specific amplification.... nice when driving and carrying on conversations.  The streamer also lets me block out and only present the sounds specifically coming through the streamer, i.e. phone conversations, music, or tv audio, so you can hear those in noisy situations. (my wife refers to it as 'selective hearing loss').  These aids have 2 amplifiers in each aid, one in the usual location in the behind-the-ear portion, and another one in the in-ear piece it self.  This secondary one is not turned on as yet, but can be should the 'need' arise' (Believe 'post' was also mentioned in that same sentence) so it 'extends' the useful life of the devices.

The aids communicate with me via 'spoken' instructions, not a series of beeps, etc.  So I instantly know then my batteries are running low (usually on a 6-7 day cycle) or if something is interfering with their constant communication to balance..."Partner check".  This was a little unnerving the first time I was going down the road and someone/thing says in my ear..."The battery for your left ear is low, please change it at your earliest convenience."  losemarbles.gif

As you can imagine, these are not cheap.... 2-3 fully loaded iMacs come to mind, but the ability to hear birds in the back yard, phone conversations clearly, take part in conversations in restaurants, or just 'normal' conversing with people without having to have them repeat themselves is worth a significant amount to me.

I hope this isn't too long or detailed, but I am SO thankful for their contribution to my life, that I thought I should share...

soapbox.gif  Oh, yes, if you are in the market for hearing aids....  go to an audiologist.... not a hearing aid sales location....  Audiologists are there to improve your hearing and only sell hearing aids as a means to that end,  hearing aid sales locations are there to improve their bottom line not your life.
