Tech / Weirdness in Mail . .
« on: September 15, 2019, 01:48:13 PM »
I'm using Mojave 10.14.5 on an MB Pro, and awhile ago, sometimes when I click on a piece of mail in my inbox, the page will display, but there's no content showing in the body. . . If I double click on the piece of mail, it will open, but in a separate window!  :wallbash:  Anybody have any ideas on how to correct this?  As usual,  :thanx: in advance!

Tech / Any way to get the Mac to quit bugging me. . .
« on: September 05, 2019, 06:06:10 PM »
about updating my OS?  I'm running a mig-'12 MB Pro running OS 10.14.5, and have NO intention of going any further, since I have a lot of applications that wont be usable under any further updates, and I'm getting sick of being bugged, every day, to update to the newest and greatest.  Yes, sometime in the foreseeable future, I'll be looking for a new machine, but it's going to be awhile.  In the meantime, if anyone has any advice to short circuit this loop I've gotten caught in, I'd truly appreciate it, and thanks in advance!

Tech / Anybody have any inside info on DW?
« on: July 30, 2019, 01:37:51 PM »
For over a year I've been wondering if Disk Warrior is going to be able to come out with an update to handle Mac's new file system, but their web site says, basically, “Hang on; we're working on it!”.  I'm praying that nothing goes “TU”, because when I finally moved to High Sierra, I stupidly overlooked the option to stop it from “updating” the file system!  :wallbash: Anybody have any insights to what's going on with Alsoft, who, as we all know, produced the best safety software available, for many years. . .

Tech / Hey Paddy: 10.14.5 update & LR6?
« on: July 06, 2019, 02:51:44 PM »
Yesterday, I updated to Mojave 10.14, and fired up LR (owned!)6, and I got a warning that it needed to be "updated", which, of course is not going to happen.  It said that it might not work on further updates.  So, I downloaded the updater for 10.14.5, but have not installed it, and am fishing around for others who use their owned LR, and whether or not it will continue to run if I update.  Any input?  :thanx:

Tech / LightRoom problem (Tacit, Paddy, Anyone?)
« on: May 27, 2019, 02:36:52 PM »
Hey guys, I've been using LR 6.14 (the last version you could actually buy without being held hostage to their "subscription" model!) for a long time, along with ON1 (since V.8, now ON1RAW), and have had no complaints, because I don't need the newest & greatest.  I know that they disabled the "MAPS" agreement that they had with Google, but why the heck, with the GPS info embedded into my photos, does that no longer get imported?  Is there any workaround that you know of?  ON1 has it, but I've found no way to apply that info from ON1 and copy it into LR photos, other than 1 by 1, which is a miserable way to have to deal with hundreds/thousands of photos!  :wallbash: I've tried to highlight a bunch of photos, and copy the GPS info onto 1, but the rest of the photos don't show it, and this is driving me nuts, now that I'm doing some traveling!  As usual, thanks in advance for any info, and you're welcome to contact me through my email if you wish (we do still have that option here, right?

Tech / HELP! Received scam email. . .
« on: July 20, 2018, 06:49:11 PM »
This morning, I was using my iPad to check my email, and found a message that basically said, "We have your password. . ." and it looked familiar, but I went through my keychain and couldn't find the one they mentioned.  I then went through all the saved passwords in notes (keep 'em in iCloud) and couldn't find it there either, so I called Apple, and of course, went through the whole change password routine with them for my Apple account and iCloud.

The email said they had access to my contacts list, which now, of course they don't, and they said that I had accessed a porn site (honest, I haven't!), and they had records of the videos I watched and unless I sent them $2K within 24 hours, they would forward them on to many of my friends.  Not worried about that, but they also said that the email had installed a keystroke logger, and even though that email hasn't touched my computer (never downloaded onto it; I isolated it in a "saved" folder on my internet provider), I was wondering if there is a way, through Terminal, to see if and where anything has been installed lately, and how would I do that (I haven't used Terminal much!).

As usual,  :thanx:

Tech / I give up!
« on: March 28, 2018, 02:22:07 PM »
I've been stressing over this ever since reading about the new APFS, and I have yet to find a simple answer, so I'm finally breaking down and turning to you guys, again!  Practically speaking, will I notice any difference in the way that Time Machine will work, and should I need to go back and rescue something from Time Machine, am I going to encounter any problems?  Or, is everything going to continue to work just like it always has?  As usual,  thanx.gif in advance!

Tech / iPad question. . .
« on: November 07, 2016, 12:33:20 PM »
Something new is happening in IOS 10.1.1 that hasn't been happening before, and I'm hoping you guys can help; before, when I had a link open in Safari, for a radio station, I could be listening to that while reading something in another "window".  Now that ability seems to have been taken away.  I've tried using TuneIn, but the same thing seems to have happened to that.  I've messed with the background refresh settings and that doesn't seem to have any effect either.  Anyone have a solution to this?

Tech / Junk mail in Sierra?
« on: November 05, 2016, 02:21:25 PM »
Used to be, when you clicked on something in Mail, and then clicked on Junk, from then on, anything from that sender would automatically go to the junk folder; no longer. . . Am I missing something here, or has Mail decided to make me go through a much more convoluted process to get mail from a certain sender get sent directly to Junk?

As usual,  thanx.gif  in advance!

Tech / In honor of the new pic at the top. .

I suppose that I could find out for myself, but here's a question that one of you guys might be able to answer for me:  I used to write a ton of letters in Appleworks, which is my main reason for still using the G5, but I thought I might like to have some of that correspondence on the MacBook, and wondered if any programs in Yosemite will open them.  T'anx in advance. .

Hey guys, I know there's a way to open a folder, and have it open another window, so that it's possible to move something from inside that folder to the other one, but danged if I can remember what it is.  Can somebody please remind this "absent minded" (have you ever really thought about that term?  smile.gif ) ol' dude how to do that?  As usual,  thanx.gif in advance!

Tech / Thank God for Time Machine!
« on: September 28, 2015, 12:59:49 PM »
Ya know, guys, for the first time in. . . ummm. . . well, since I got my first G3, back around '92 or so, I'm really grateful for the habit of backing up stuff with Time Machine.  I'm still using my G5 for writing letters and some other stuff (I occasionally have need of the OS 9.2(!) side of the partition, because of a couple of graphic programs that aren't available for OS X), and 2 days ago, I turned it on, and it just was wonky.  The mouse quit double clicking, things were slow to respond, and when they did, they wouldn't do what they were supposed to.  I repaired permissions, did a disc repair, ran Disk Warrior (worked for hours and did nothing; my fault because I had forgotten that the old (V3.3?) wouldn't work on any version of OS X past 10.4 (?), and I have 10.5.8, so I held my breath, and did a "restore" for the complete system, after backing up my correspondence folder for AppleWorks and the music folder.  I found that the last Time Machine backup had been from March, '14 (I'll do it more often from here out!), but since I don't do a lot on it, that was fine, and away we went.  It was slow (a number of hours), because it was USB1 that it was working with, but it's all back and working perfectly, and I'm tickled pink.  Lesson learned?  Do the backups just a little more often!

It may not have been needed, had it occurred to me that I have the newest version of DW which might have taken care of the problem much faster, but I had forgotten that it would have worked on 10.5.8 and newer, and both powermac and intel machines. . . doh.gif  Guess I'm getting "older"!

Had this happened on the MacBook, it would have been a lot faster, but since the MB reminds me every 10 days, and it's USB 3, it's a lot faster!  Ignore the rules of backing things up at your own peril!  biggrin.gif

Tech / Combo update to Yosemite?
« on: September 02, 2015, 03:09:17 PM »
Hey guys, I've decided to finally jump to Yosemite, but I really do not want to upgrade to th new iTunes.  I'm running 12.0 and am quite happy with it, so I'm wondering if there is a way to download a "Combo updater" like we used to do, and then specify that iTunes be left out of the upgrade.  If so, can you provide a link for me, or tell me whether there is a way to specify that before I do the upgrade, or is that option available once you click on the "Upgrade" button.  Also, is the "Restore in place" option there, so that I don't have to worry about losing apps & stuff?  (I have already backed up my stuff, and just did my Time Machine backup as well, so I shouldn't lose anything if anything goes wrong.)

As usual,  thanx.gif in advance!
