A mechanic, a programmer and an engineer are driving in the mountains. Going down a steep hill they realise the brakes cannot slow, much less, stop the car. They miraculously miss all traffic, make all the curves and eventually stop at the bottom of the hill.

The mechanic says he needs to take the brake system apart and fix whatever is broken.

The engineer says the brakes are oviously too small for the car and need to be redesigned.

The programmer says "We just need to push the car up the hill and see if the failure happens again"!

Tech / Re: Can i work off my EHD instead of my iMac?
« on: January 17, 2025, 10:46:28 PM »
You can certainly run your old iMac from an external drive. However, booting will probably be slower, even if the drive is faster than your internal drive. Your file access will be slower than the internal hard-wired buss speed. Still, that slower speed will only be seen/felt when opening/closing a file, assuming you don't shutdown/startup more than once a day. :)

What types of ports do you have on that Mac?

I had a 2017(?) mac Mini that I added an internal SSD. It already had the wiring/port for a second drive and i could do the minor work (required a screw driver!) myself. I then installed the OS and all upgrades to that SSD. Booting and working from that SSD was amazing! That's why new machines don't even include hard drives anymore. I suppose you could find a tech who could add an internal SSD to your iMac for a price. You might even take a look at iFixIt for instructions on doing that on your own.

I have not read os getting a M version Mac to run an old OS version unless you install some virtual OS crutches software. You may notice that there is no longer a "10" in front of the newest Apple operating systems. "10.x" is no longer supported. I only at macOS13.7.2, but the latest is 15.x! :sweatingbullets:

I'm a bit confused as to what macOS your "old" mac is running Sonoma. You said "My old iMac has OS10.14.6". I assume that is running Intel CPUs. Is that correct?

Any "new" mac will have the new "Apple Silicon" (M4) and should have Sequoia (15.x) installed.

You can boot Sequoia off external drives:
Apple Support page
Apple insider

I am assuming that the older Adobe software only runs on Intel chips. Is that correct?
In that case. Installing Sequoia on an external drive won't help: The M4 can't run the old Adobe software. I don't think it can run an older macOS (14.6, Sonoma) either.

However, they remain on the Mac desktop.
Don't forget, the Mac runs on a real computer with lots more power for user-made rules than iOS. For example, Mail on the Mac allows you to set how long junk and deleted emails remain in the 'trash'. You might want to adjust your settings in Mail; "Erase deleted messages: After one day/After one week/After one month". Same for junk messages.

I only have iOS 17.7.1 on my iPhone. I do have the above choices for my Comcast (Xfinity) mail account, but not for (iCloud) Mail.

Tech / More "Memories" Than I Can Remember?
« on: November 06, 2024, 09:26:24 AM »
Just got a "Notification" that I have a new collection/album of "Pets" on my iPhone. Uhmmmn... looks just like a previous album. Why am I getting another Notification? Have my cats grown an opposable thumb so they can access my iPhone camera?!

The first time I saw this "Pets" album, it was sort of amusing, semi-cute. Since then, I have started wondering more about these "Memories". Here is a link to an Apple page that describes what this "feature" is and controls you have in your Mac. Here is a page with much of the same info for iOS devices.

Now, where was I?! Oh yeah, how can I "forget" some of these "memories"! :wallbash:

1. You won't get any of these "reminders to remember" unless you have enabled them in the Notifications Settings (in whichever device).
2. Select the "Notifications" item in Settings.
3. Go to the "Photos" item in the list of things that can notify you.
4. Now you can turn OFF all Notifications (from Photos) OR select how/where you get notified (in iOS:Banner, Lock Screen, Notification Center, Mac: None, Banners, Alerts).
Can you remember when using a Mac was a two-step process?

Just remember, stopping Notifications does NOT mean stopping these "memories" from being created without your input/control. Apple knows you need these memories, you just forgot to create them.  :whistling:

At least there is a way to delete these albums, see the linked Apple page(s) above.

When I decided to see these "memories" albums, I discovered I had ten duplicate albums on my Mac. On my iPhone there were at least 8 duplicates of "Pets" and another album had four duplicates. I'm pretty sure these duplicates are based on some time/date algorithm Apple uses to create/duplicate them. Deleting one of these "memories" albums does not delete the actual images. In other words, deleting all the duplicates won't gain any usable memory in your device.

Enjoy your memories ("whether you want to or not")! :coolio:

Tech / Setting Startup/Shutdown Times After Ventura
« on: October 31, 2024, 10:31:01 AM »
Many may never want/need to change these times. Apple made it easy in all the OS' before Ventura. Then someone decided we should use a third-party app or Terminal to do that.

Third-party app (there may be others): Onyx

Terminal commands (Most mention Ventura but the instructions still apply to Sonoma and Sequoia):

Apple seems to want us to have less and less control of our 'real' computers. Part of the move to 'mobile' devices, I assume.

Being retired, I decided I didn't need to have my iMac open and ready to go at 6:30am. Especially if I had left a YouTube tab open in Safari, which is set to "Play when tab is opened". I'll just set an alarm if I need to wake up, thank you very much.

That's when I (thankfully) remembered that since Ventura, Apple has removed the simply scheduling portion of Energy Prefs. Actually, they have completely changed "System Preferences"; it's now "System Settings". In order to change the Startup/Shutdown times we must now use Terminal. And even then, we have to remember to add "sudo" before entering the required commands. And you should also remember that you won't be asked for your password directly, you will just see a flashing cursor waiting for you to type the password. Of course, you will remember from your last use of Terminal, you will not actually see characters appear as you type. You can never be too careful if your cats on on your shoulder!! :whistling: :laughhard:

Fortunately, there are many sites that provide instructions, explanations and even copy and paste code. I'll list a few in a new Post (for some reason, a search here fails to find that post).

What ever happened to the "Friendly User Interface" Department?!

I'll likely never see Sonoma since it may be at least next year when I replace my 2017 iMac.

Tech / File Name Shows on Custom Desktop Picture
« on: October 29, 2024, 10:54:54 AM »
I finally got around to see if I could get rid of the text that always shows when I use a custom image as a Desktop Picture. I'm still on Ventura, still looking for a "roundtoit" for that update task, but I think this method will work for most any MacOS.

The fix is extremely simple. The 'text' is actually the 'path' to that image file, ifor example:
"bootVolume/Library/Desktop Pictures/fileName.type" that will appear in quite large System Font in the middle of you screen.

It does require using Terminal. Apparently, Apple doesn't you thinking THEY had provided the image? :wallbash:

To STOP the text that displays when you have added an image to your /Library/Desktop Pictures folder:
1. Open Terminal (usually in your Utilities folder)
2. Copy the following text:

Code: [Select]
defaults write com.apple.dock desktop-picture-show-debug-text -bool FALSE  && killall Dock3. Paste that copied text in Terminal at the (probably) flashing 'cursor'
4. Press Return
5. Quite Terminal (command-Q)

If you eventually long for the return of that very distracting text on your beautiful image, simply copy that same text above but change the FALSE to TRUE, as in:

Code: [Select]
defaults write com.apple.dock desktop-picture-show-debug-text -bool TRUE  && killall Dock

I swear this is NOT political and it's certainly not democratic!! And I have no problem if you want to fact-check me!

Did you hear about the dictator who was only 12 inches tall? He only lasted 1 day, so you could have missed his activities, anyway...
He was a terrible king!
But he was a great ruler.

his taking a screenshot won't make any difference cause if the highlighting truly isn't working, then no color will show
That's a problem with the System screenshot function, if you use command + Shift + 4. While is does show a selection, it is normally light grey. However, using command + shift + 3 gives you a screen shot that includes selection highlighting. Granted, cropping out 97% of that image takes just a bit of work, I think it would be worth trying to make a reply. I think even Mojave macOS 10.14 had a "Screenshots" display with descriptions of what each keyboard shortcuts do. And there are so many free/cheap screen capture apps out there, why bother with OS limitations? :dntknw:

Actually, I suspect his problem may be related to his contrast, saturation settings. Likewise, when you pick a different color "dot", a white dot appears in the center of that choice. Is that white center what is confusing him? :dntknw:

I don't mind if he found another solution from some place else. We(I) might just learn something.
