2. If you were lazy you wouldn't waste time trying to build Mail's rules. Spamsieve learns more than just the domain name of the sender. It also learns from the words used in the message. It builds much more than a list of sender names or where they come from. The rule you define may not even be used again. :wallbash:

1. What else can you buy for $2.67 a month (last major update price)? And you only pay for major updates (2.x to 3.x) not incremental ones(3.0 to 3.3) Plus, this is a Mac only app. Help support Mac Devs!

I think you answered your own question. There may be some g-mail users here that can help. In the mean time, just set up g-mail to forward all messages to Apple Mail. Done.

Your second question "What the heck is this all about...", it's about how you set up g-mail to require 2-factor ID.

Another clue may have to do with your Mac Prefs: "Files & Folders" and "Full Disk Access". it might help to add g-mail in those settings. Allow Google access to your machine at your own peril.

Personally, most of my contacts with g-mail account are blocked.

Thanx, jON! ☺️

Tech / Re: Captures screen saver...?
« on: February 13, 2024, 06:11:15 PM »
Select "Mojave" (if not already there) at this Apple Support page. It claims there is a 'delay' setting available, probably in the "Options" button:
Quote from: Apple
You can take pictures (called screenshots) or recordings of the screen on your Mac using Screenshot or keyboard shortcuts. Screenshot provides a panel of tools that let you easily take screenshots and screen recordings, with options to control what you capture—for example, you can set a timer delay or include the pointer or clicks.

Perhaps this page at Apple will help. The instructions worked for me in Ventura.

1. Have the Screen Saver item in System Prefs open.
2. Press Shift + Command + 5 to open the screen shot settings details.
3. Set the delay to 10 seconds.
4. Click the "Full Screen" icon.
5. Select the Screen Saver you want to capture.
6. Press the "Preview" button in the Screen Saver Prefs.
7. Wait for the 'captured' sound and press any key to see the tiny, captured image in the lower, right-hand corner of your screen.
8. use your favorite disk/file search app to look for a .png file with a name starting with "Screenshot". It may be right on your Desktop. My testing created a file named:
"Screenshot 2024-02-13 at 10.13.30 AM.png"

Quote from: Apple
Screenshots are saved as .png files and screen recordings are saved as .mov files. Filenames begin with “Screenshot” or “Screen Recording” and include the date and time.

Just took a look at ARC. Might be fine for Desktop. Will not install on mobile devices however as the only search engine currently is Google. I've only used DuckDuckGo on all my devise for the last few years.

So far, I'm finding Apple is pretty fast with security updates for Safari. How does Arc match with Apple in that area? Apparently Arc is at version 1.28.x.

Well, that didn't get very far. First it wanted to import my passwords from Safari (or any other browser that might store them(!). I don't store any passwords in any browser, but I clicked the "Safari" button, anyway.

Second, it wants "Full Disk Access". That's pretty normal for any kind of utility. Apparently, one of the changes in Ventura is that "Files and Folders" is no longer a choice in Security & Privacy. In Ventura, it's 'all-or-nothing'. Without any experience with the Browser Company, I'll forego further access to their app(s). Thus I selected "Do this later".

Now I get to select my favorite apps. I assume a multi-colored, dot-matrix "F" is Faceslap? Obviously "X" is the app formerly known a Twot! I think there is an icon for MS Outlook. Why would I be using a MS app?! I doubt the little box with an "N" inside it is for Netscape! I have no idea what the other four icons are. By now I think the center icon is Arc's indicator for choosing some other "favorite" app. Possibly, but I may not have even got 2.5 out of 9! The red outlined box with the right-pointing arrow only turns on/off the red outline for the bod. Rhat icon does look like a YouTube icon. Guess I'll try the "Skip for now" link. I already keep all my favorite apps running pretty much any time the Mac is on, no need for another side-bar taking up screen real estate. :dntknw:

Fourth, it wants to import my bookmarks. This will be fast because I don't keep any bookmarks in any browser. That's what URLM Pro is for; all my 1.5MBs of bookmarks (plus the last 1,000 visited sites) always available in all my browsers. I will only switch to Arc (or any other browser) if it or URLM Pro is supported.

I don't think I'm in the targeted users. Oh well... Of course, part of my problems may be related to my skipping many of the settings. :dntknw:

I'm sure we've all done something wrong, as long as we're alive, anyway.  :Devilish: On the other hand, I'm not sure why your '2024' thread was locked. I've posted a query on the Admin board but not everyone visits every day... Why not make a Note entry for each post/day and when/if you get that thread UN-locked, you can post them into a message for each missed day.  :dntknw:

Tech / NameDrop Confusion
« on: December 05, 2023, 11:55:29 AM »
Some of my friends have iPhones (or even iPads, earPods [or whatever they are called]) and are also "social" media and commercial "news" watchers. Some of them are excited/concerned/ignorant about a new function added in iOS 17 called NameDrop.

First of all, as Apple is want to do, it is enabled by default. The Settings are not in a unique/separate item in Settings. But as many of you will anticipate, it is the "AirDrop" settings:
   Settings->General->AirDrop
Scroll down a bit to find "START SHARING BY" section. There you will find "Bringing Devices Tog..." O know, why didn't they just call it "Allow NameDrop"?! :wallbash: All I can figure is that the menu designers don't use iPhones!

Second, when you hear people say "it transfers you Contacts" correct them, if you can, by stating that it dose not transfer "contactS", it only transfers a single contact, your "My Card".

Third, it even allows you to choose which items in your single, personal Contact can be transferred. My info includes only: first name, last name, mobile number and home email. How do I know? Go to your "My Card", scroll down to "Share Contact" and read the list. Uncheck any item you don't want to share.

Fourth, here is a list of links for further reading/learning:

If you are meeting a lot of new people and want to add them to your Contacts, I can see this as useful. Otherwise, being fairly anti-social and also retired, I have no need of this capability.

Note to designers/developers: Figure out a way to allow iOS to have a real, accessible filing system. And, while you are at it, add the control, option and/or Apple keys. Stop dumbing down the Mac OS and fix the iOS. :yahoo:

Tech / Re: Formating partitioned external drive..?
« on: December 05, 2023, 11:23:56 AM »
Just erase the partitions.

They cannot ever be re-united as one without deeper control of the drive. At least Disk Utility doesn't seem to have that capability. That is one reason partitions were not recommended in the past.

According to the Apple Support page pictured below, your screen shot indicates the actual hard drive is not normally shown. I assume that one or more of the names shown as "Externe" include the partitions you want to erase.

Is the "Save QuickSilver O..." selected? I can't tell by the grey background, sometimes a screenshot converts the normal background color to grey. Is that, perhaps, the name of the drive that contains all (or some) of the partitions?

I'm not sure if that OS allows you to add a partition to any other partition. You may have to simply wipe/erase the entire drive. Have you tried that? Partitions are often more trouble than they are worth. :wallbash:

Are you opening Disk Utility from the apps list or from your Recovery drive?Never mind, Mojave didn't have a Recovery drive.
Erase a volume using Disk Utility

Have you tried your own suggestion: Erase them one by one.

Great to hear your cruise was enjoyable, also. 👏 We've had several, but one suffered from low water during the drought in much of Europe.
