Tech / Compressing large amounts of data
« on: September 11, 2011, 09:47:44 AM »
I have some large folders full of RAW photos I want just archive and keep on a dvd preferably.

I tried Disk Image in Utilities and managed to get a 12.58gb folder down to a disk image of 12.32gb. That is not what I call compressed. It is just very slightly smaller.

I tried using Toast Titanium and got it down to 12.29gb - still not very compressed.

Where am I going wrong.  I thought Disk Image made large things smaller.

If it is not that method, what can I use to get a large folder squeezed onto a dvd?

Compression doesn't really equal anything smaller imho.

All thoughts welcome and all help appreciated xx

I bought this off Ebay and split it into the component parts, ie 6 lovely mink strips complete with feet, removing any pins and glass eyes first:-

Result - 6 excellent terrier toys to practice killing with that last for ages.

I put my holiday snaps with it.

Floss found this very difficult as she has hearing difficulties.

Community / Total Dilemma!
« on: September 25, 2010, 02:38:56 PM »
I was sent some lovely medicinal chocolates that must have pre-op and post-op healing properties.

Typed on a piece of paper taped to the lid are the words (and because it is typed, it must be official) :-

Dosage
One to be taken daily prior to surgery
One to be taken daily after surgery
This medication to be consumed by patient only.

Well, obviously, I must obey orders from the prescriber but, and here is my dilemma, I don't have my operation date yet.  So do I start eating them as I am in pre-op status or do I wait until I have the date from the surgeon and then start eating them?

Answers on a postcard please!

They are beautiful and totally made my day!

The furry thing they are arranged on will make a great hat too!

Thank you very very much.  Words fail me at your kindness.

Are they for the potential op or to welcome my new Macbook Pro btw? smile.gif whistling.gif

Tech / 2nd Question
« on: September 21, 2010, 11:28:31 AM »
Now I am just using the Migration Set-up assistant, who is taking his time I can tell you, to set up a few things and I will hopefully be on my way.

Is it possible to use the Migration Set-up Assistant from 2 other Macs to talk to the Macbook Pro too? I want to copy some apps. If they are apps I have bought, will they just transfer over or will I have to get another registration number or pay out more money to put it onto my new computer?

Tech / 1st question - Mail icons
« on: September 21, 2010, 10:58:52 AM »
Ok, first question.

How do you make the icons in Mail (such as Delete, Junk, etc) bigger.  They are tiny wee with small wee writing underneath barely readable.  I have managed to make the rest bigger, it is just the piddly little icons and descriptions underneath that are the problem.

Also how do you turn off, get rid of RSS - I am so not interested in that.

Well it has arrived finally, no thanks to UPS who consistently lied through their teeth about a delivery date.

It is like Christmas Day for me - (yes, I am that shallow).

I did all my chores including massive paperwork for exporting ponies, cleaning one room with proper furniture polish (I am trying to keep on top of housework, by cleaning one room a day), and tidied up a bit.

Work over, I opened up the magic box and sniffed that glorious smell of new (almost-ok, refurb) Macbook Pro!

Next I couldn't open the thing and I admit to having a look in the instructions to see if there is a secret opening button.  Eventually I found you just sort of shove it open and ta da!

Tech / Update on refurbished or new discussion!
« on: July 23, 2010, 06:29:28 AM »
Neither!

OH mended his iBook!   notworthy.gif

He took it to bits, bought a refurb cable, fitted it and his iBook works perfectly now.

Damn!

There goes my argument for me getting a new one and giving him my old iBook!  Thinking.gif

But respek to my OH who had the thing in pieces twice and only one spare little screw left!  Fingers crossed it is essential and his iBook dies and my discussion can be reborn!

Tech / Refurbished or Brand new?
« on: July 16, 2010, 04:04:17 AM »
Do you buy a refurbished Mac from the Apple website that doesn't tell you how old it is or how many miles it has done for a couple of hundred quid less than a new one?

Is it a better deal to buy refurbished?

I like the year's warranty.  I like the smell of a new box (i could give that up), I like the shiny screens!  I am not sure about the new OS as I only run 10.5.8 on my iMac and that suits me fine.

I need, yes need, something to travel the country with that can run Photoshop CS3 efficiently, can deal quickly with 500 x 50mb tiff photos, will burn a cd/dvd quickly and still have change from a fiver for a fish supper on the way home!

My iBook struggles with anything and is, wait for it, at least 5 years old!

My iMac is wonderful but non-portable.

I work with both all the time.  My iBook does my emails and its battery has stopped it being very portable (£70 for a new battery).

My iMac does everything else but nothing is stored on it except for my day-to-day work.  The Time Capsule backs up and holds iTunes and the external HD has all my photos.

Anywho, your thoughts please on new or refurbished.  I would only buy from the online UK Apple Store because, should something go wrong, they arrange and pay for collection and delivery, if still under warranty, and it is ruddy expensive to send anything from these beleagured isles!

Community / We went fishing this afternoon and .....
« on: July 13, 2010, 11:51:19 AM »
Daisy and I went fishing with the dogs (a sort of dogwalk and fishing trip combined).

Be-Anne tried to dive in every time one of us cast.  Then my rod broke - it was on the way out anyway.  So Daisy gave me her rod and tidied out the fishing bag instead.

Meanwhile we had a "discussion" about her new Raybans that I had no idea she had bought.  Apparently I knew this.  I think not!

Anywho, I caught a fish.  Ok so it is not the biggest and the dogs did try and help!  I am most chuffed.

Guess what's for supper tonight ?...............................................
