Title: Help exorcise OS X to boot on OS 9 -G4 MD
Post by: OJ on May 07, 2003, 07:48:00 PM
Hi, please if anyone knows how to errase OS X permanently from my G4 Mirror Drive and Install Os 9 and only boot from it. This would solve all my problems., I tried to errase my HD and install OS 9 only on it but after the fact the G4 would not start up from my OS 9.2.2 Full install disk.
Please tell me there is a way as I can't use any of my old hardware in Os X and will only work on Os 9.

Check macfixit.com and macosxhints.com

These places may provide some help, but not much. Basically, the hardware that allows you to boot into OS 9 is not included with these Macs, makig it virtually impossible to boot into X. Personally, I think it's a good change, as OS X is far superior, and less hardware means cheaper Macs.

Which MDD model is it?

If it's brand new it might not be able to with one exceptopn.

if it's a bit older like my Dual Gig MDD you can.

Well. That's the exception.

There's two models of that machine.

One that will Dual Boot and one that won't.

What were you told when you bought it?

If it's the Firewire 800 model it won't.

I thought that even the newest machines will boot into OS 9.x (Classic) as long as it's on it's own partition.

In anticipation of the release of v10.3, I have partitioned my main drive and put OS X on one and OS 9.x on the other.

If I heard the Apple guy correctly, he said that will the only way anyone will be able to boot into Classic after updating to OS 10.3.

Just to be sure... I plan to call Apple tomorrow and see if I can find out more about this.

(edit)

Now I am confused...

I just visited the discussions at Apple. In two threads, it was said that the new FW800 Macs will not boot into Classic. No way... No how...

The new Firewire 800 mac Towers will not Boot OS 9.

No way. No how.

Don't be comfused.

One way to tell if that 1.25 Gig is the older kind.

If it has 2 MBs of L3 Cache it's the older OS 9 Bootable.

Look in Apple System Profiler.

Aren't the 800 firewire ports slightly larger also?

The new computers won't boot into OS 9, no way, no how. They will *run* OS 9 in Classic, but nothing will make them *boot* OS 9.

This is because they contain new hardware (Bluetooth, Airport Extreme, a new memory controller chip, FireWire 800) that was developed after OS 9. Apple could write OS 9 Toolbox routines to make these computers boot OS 9, but it won't--for the same reason that it did not make Power Macs boot System 6. When the Power Macs came out, System 6 was dead, and Apple no longer wanted to dedicate money and resources to it; and now, OS 9 is dead, and Apple doesn't want to dedicate money and resources to it.
