iMac, OS9.1, 233mhz, 160mb ram
Ièm getting strange symbols on messages from some sites. I have three choices of language in English: Candian CSA, Canadian ISO (I have no idea what that means) and US. Iève (seeÉ) tried all three but Ièm still getting foreign looking symbols on some words. I unchecked the keyboard extension but to no avail.

Fiona, I'm a bit confused - are you seeing strange symbols in the text on web pages? If so, check your browser preferences - in the Appearance section (Safari), or Language/Font in IE, check the Default Encoding. I find the best results with Western (Latin 1). Wacky things can happen with Western (Mac OS Roman).
I'm seeing weird symbols in your post...what I don't know is if this has something to do with the encoding set in your browser, but would suspect that it does.
The preference you've been looking at in the OS preferences is for the keyboard/OS - and since I no longer use OS 9, I can't tell you what the differences are - there doesn't seem to be that option in my version of X.
I did find this though on the CSA/ISO standard:

Don't think those choices have anything to do with your issue though - but at least you can see what they are!

Sorry, Paddy. Yes, I was talking about text. I switched to Latin 1 and everything seems to be OK now. The message I sent was typed with the keyboard extension off. I switched it back on, took your advice and so far, so good. I really appreciate your help. I really love this forum.
