Title: New Board...growing pains!!!
Post by: dolphin on April 13, 2006, 10:10:16 AM
I have noticed that many...(Kelly's was the first to catch my eye) members avatars are not showing...!

Is this just a growing pain of the new software or do they have them turned OFF???

BTW...I love how some of the upgraded software features work...eg BOLDCOLOR smile.gif  clap.gif

WOW.gif  It's good to be back - and the board looks so different.

They didn't accept my password yesterday but today it came through loud and clear.

thanx.gif   for all of your work to make this site even better than it was before.

You have a sharp eye, Roy. I wasn't paying attention to that.

Maybe it has something to do with custom vs. 'smorgasbord' avatars.

Let's see...

The previous board was slow as molasses compared to other forums. This new version is as
slow as wet cement, due no doubt to "growing pains". For your information I measured the
time to open the Posts page and also the time to open a Topic, with various browsers.
Here are the results:

I hope that by the time our growing pains are over our new board will be as fast as some other forums. Still we must thank our leaders to have such a grand outlook for our future. A hell of a good job is being done.

I am confused.
Does this mean TechSurvivors has not Survived?
I really liked it the way it was.
Must be that old saying.....
"In Spring a Young Mans fancy turns to thoughts of LOVE...ing to change things"
I.m going to try a different browser to see if it helps.

Maybe some of the people who have avatars can share the method by which they were established with those who haven't got them anymore!  This is after everything else is working.  I feel naked without one but if I can stand to run around naked then you'll all have to bare with me!

The lucky one's were those who have custom avatars stored somewhere else addressable as a URL; this I know.  I just don't have a space, either in Flick'r or my Yahoo photos where and individual photo can be addressed by a permanent URL.  I have a webpage, dedicated to my father's memory, and I suppose I could figure out how to link a one picture page to that!  I'm a hardware technician not a webwacker! wallbash.gif

Welcome back, mister k!!!

The admins on this board had to upgrade the board software because of security reasons. The forum was under attack by vermin that would put javascript macros on the pages and force advertising and pop-up and pop-under pages to appear against the admins wishes.

The board software still needs plenty of tweaking to get it up and running faster but IPB and the admins are working on it as posted in other threads.

Now the forums should be safe again. *Phew*   whew.gif  sweatingbullets.gif

I simply had to reassign the link to my image that is hosted on my iDisk.

Flickr is free, why not use it to host your avatar? Same as photobucket and other free image hosting places...

This is really great, its a nice new look.  Thank you ALL for working on this!
It is quite slow here too, but I dont think that will last, its just so new.

I did notice that way down in the right bottom corner, the time and date is given.  The date is OK, the time I think is Pacific time, but the minutes are off.

Will you artists be able to create banners?

Anyway, Thank you all for this, its indeed nice.

MHC, thanks for explaining the need for the change. I realized that katscan came aboard after the problems we had with the attacks, and was getting ready to post the reason. I do expect that the banners will soon return! smile.gif

katscan, I don't think the speed (or lack thereof) is a browser issue. The work on the upgrade is not complete, and there is still work being done, including getting the speed issue resolved.

I tried Flick'r (now owned by Yahoo as well) today and couldn't get it to show me a link for a single picture to put into the place in the avatar profile.  I'm not in a hurry; I want the board fast before I worry about my avatar.  I'll read up on Flick'r.  Thanks!

I guess I've been lucky in that I never saw any pop-ups or whatever on my PC's or my MAC's with the old software.   smile.gif

Just testing if this will work...

It does!!!!

Ok how to do this with Flickr, gunug... You need to isolate the picture you want in another window. Click on your avatar that is hosted there so it goes in a window by itself. This won't really isolate your picture with an URL you can use yet. You need to right-click (or Option-click) on the image and ask for "Open image in new window". This will give you a workable URL. Flickr will add some stuff like "?v=0" at the end of your image's URL. Just delete that till you get the right file format like ".jpg" or ".gif" or whatever file format your avatar is saved as.

My example is this URL I got: http://static.flickr.com/35/111647748_e31c687855.jpg?v=0

So I delete the "?v=0" and the image tag becomes "http://static.flickr.com/35/111647748_e31c687855.jpg" and that works fine! smile.gif

Hi Gunug, I never saw any of the problems either. Thank goodness. I dont know why.

I will work on my avitar later, I should change it, as our dear YellowLab is no longer on Earth,,,,,,,,,

I use Flickr for my blog photos, Flickr is really great.
I do use Pbase or .mac for most other things, will have to see if it works with them.
Thank you all for this info, I will have to work on it later.

I do have a bad email issue that I need help with, never encountered anything like it before, its rather awful for a Mac user. It is a PC problem, but it seems to have hit a few people using our cable ISP,,,,,But I will wait until we are up and running full speed before I ask for help with it.

If you've got a web page, you got space on that server. That's all you need—a place to store the image. For you web page, you probably have some images as well as the html files. Just put the avatar image in with all the other images and use the Profile prefs area at TS to insert the url [http://www.yourSitesName/YourAvatar.jpg] Or, if the images are in a folder at your web space, throw in the name of the folder just before the name of the image name. Url's are almost exactly like path names to your OS X stuff; "yourHardDrive/UserX/Documents/Images/YourAvatar.gif"

There is a limited number of avatars to pick from here if you don't have a place to keep one on the internet. Click on My Contols at the top, and you'll see the list of things you can do. Go into Board Settings to pick from the avatars here.

I did not see an option to automatically disable a saved signature. Seems that if you have a signature, the default is to show it and you have to click it off each time you post if you prefer to hold it in reserve for special topics. Of course, one could always take it down.

There is a lot yet to be done.
What you see is not the final product by any means.

The skin you all have is the default that comes with the software. We will be offering a choice of skins in the near future as we get them set up to accept our welcome banners and put in our logo, etc.

Also some tweaking is needed to get box sizes proper.

Just a note that when you reply generally to a thread, use the ADDREPLY button at the very bottom of the page. The reply box that is just below a particular post is to reply directly to that post. We didn't have that feature before and it may be confusing at first.

Using that reply box below your post got me here, quoting you. (I have edited out the rest of it manually.)

I have tried the "Quote+" button, but find that confusing. It reveals that it is "Toggle multiquote addition" -whatever that means. When I click it to open a new tab, it opens a clone of the same page. Someone will have to explain the purpose of this, and how to use it for "old dogs" like me.

Good morning,

For several days I had tried to open Techsurvivors without success and was saddened to think that I had lost this wonderful community where every Mac issue I have raised here has been answered with professional alacrity.  Boy is it a pleasure to be here, I couldn't care less that the board is slow because I know that those who administer this board are dealing with this.  I have but one request, once everything is in place and tested, etc., could we be told what are the changes/improvements.  As always, great to know that my Mac lifeline is available.

Thanks,

Johanbgoot

Multiquote is so cool! Say you want to quote two people or more in your reply, you just click on the Quote + below each of those you want their quote to appear in your reply box so you can reply to each of them individually in the same post.

I think it's simply fab!!!  clap.gif

And Johan, there is a partial list of what IPB 2.1 has in terms of new features in right here.

And I found some skins that IPB offers for IPB 2.1.

My favourite is this one. With a different header/banner like TS' own it would look very good. I love the colours! They look yummy!  yum.gif

Felt quite lost without it for the past few days.  Congrats Admins on a great new site.  Thank you.
As for the speed, it's of secondary importance.  Sure, it would be nice if it were faster (and eventually it probably will be) but the important thing is to have access.

At least one or two choices with colours! Please. Pretty please!  tongue.gif

I already linked you guys to Hunters & Collectors 2.1 but I'll do it again.  laugh.gif

Automn Skin is nice too, with a big space for the TS banners.

Another one that isn't too bad is IBR Green Style where the colours are more neutral. But I slightly prefer the other two, they have more life. More jazzy.   yahoo.gif

But... I wonder. Are these free?  unsure.gif

MacHeadCase: I have tried this avatar thing again and it still doesn't seem to be working.  I have
the following tasteful image of a famous actor:

http://static.flickr.com/47/128368568_4231c27d41.jpg?v=0

And I type this into the Avatar screen in the control panel, hit <Update Avatar> and it grinds and
then acts like it did something and you wait and it goes back to the same page and the URL isn't
there and it says "noavatar".  The image is 90 x 90 pixels and I've tried typing that in.  Any ideas?

Like I posted earlier... Delete the ending ?v=0 from the URL and it works in the boards between image tags so it should work for your avatar.

Plainly put, put this URL in the Enter a URL to an online avatar image field: ---> http://static.flickr.com/47/128368568_4231c27d41.jpg

and then click on Update Avatar. Just make sure your image respects the image size 90 X 90 pixels at a resolution of 72 dpi and this should work.

One thing you all will have to understand, the last time we upgraded the board software we set up a test board and ironed out most of the kinks ahead of time. We weren't able to do that this time so we are adjusting things while it is live. That can cause a lot of misunderstandings and some of what you see may be different as we go along.

I'll take a look at the avatar galleries later and see if I can see what's going on.

More skins will be available in due time.  smile.gif

Ah.  Back online.  Nice to see you up and running.  Lots of new stuff to see and get used to.  It allowed me to log in today (first time since the upgrade) It's nice to be remembered!  Not everything made the trip though.

Me too. Followed the thread to here and it appears that I'm not alone.
My avatar   http://www.mirafiori.com/~kdickson/pics/comp.gif  for some reason won't fly.   It's only 72X70 at 72dpi.  Tried all the above fixes and even moved it around to a couple of different servers.

Not sure if this helps, but this shows up at the bottom of my screen after the update script runs.  It appears to be an error message.

krissel - My avatar is working now!  Thanks for all of your efforts; and I know it isn't very important in the scheme of things.  smile.gif

FYI: I did nothing different than I was doing before and I just tried it again as MacHeadCase
suggested and pasted it in without the end of the tag and I typed in the actual 90x90 size.
I also deleted the "http:" that was already in that box as per whoever else's suggestion. I
did get the same message talked about elsewhere:

IPB WARNING [2] (null)() [ref.outcontrol]: output handler 'ob_gzhandler' cannot be used twice. . .

But this time it actually worked!  Must've been something you changed!  clap.gif

Speaking purely for myself, can I just say I don't expect a response from "the management" every time I post a comment. I'm sure they have more than enough to do and I'm just hoping added info will help their work. The bells and whistles can follow at a later date wink.gif

2. Yesterday I dropped by and several threads where locked. Not sure why, as today they are unlocked
One of the new features wallbash.gif is the ability for moderators to lock a thread by right clicking *ahem* using whatever combination of keys you have programmed your more than one button mouse to bring up contextual menus, the folder on the far left of a topic title, and it will lock the thread.

If you, like I use the right click *ahem*use whatever combination of keys you have programmed your more than one button mouse to bring up contextual menus, to tab browse, it will lock the thread before the moderator notices it. oops.gif

There are still tweaks needing to be done, some, as Kris aid, may or may not be permanent.  But keep giving the feedback! thanx.gif

You programed and entire button to what Apple already provides?! What a waste of energy and hardware! eek2.gif  harhar.gif All you have to do is hold the 'left' button down for maybe 1/3 of a second and the contextural menu pops right up. One button, no additional keys, no *ahem* misteaks! harhar.gif

Instead, MY right button performs something useful! It brings up a list of Shakespeare sonnet's! ( 'option-right-click' forces an Old English font )... coolio.gif  notworthy.gif  taped.gif

Avatar Update:   Success!  Not a big thing, but a "thing" none the less.

Not sure what caused it, but today I tried about six times with FF and Saf to add my old avatar and still no dice.  Finally while still in Safari, I logged out and logged back in and went straight to "My Controls" and it took!  No error message either.  BTW, I'm getting that same error message:  IPB WARNING [2] (null)() [ref.outcontrol]: output handler 'ob_gzhandler' cannot be used twice (Line: 0 of Unknown) on the bottom of every page.

Probably old news.  I can see you guys (N gals) are working hard getting the new format whipped into shape.  Good going.  I got the "Jungle" banner today and I'm looking forward to exploring.

assure.gif No prob, and I'm delighted to know I'm not the only one who accidently hits key combos and does weird things.  tease.gif

My life will be so much fun in a few months when I go back to my MAC and it's ONE button mouse. I've gotten used to this 3 button mouse -- even if it's uncomfortable for my hand.

I do appreciate all the hard work y'all are putting in. May the Easter Bunny leave extra chocolate in your basket.  :rabbit2:

*Snip*

You go into your My Controls and then on the left sidebar navigation thingy you click on Edit Profile Information.

First field you see in the page to fill out is Custom member title.  smile.gif

Okay, who's playing tricks on me? biggrin.gif

That option was NOT there previously.

Now it is.

Maybe I'm going blind.

Or maybe I'm nuts. clown.gif tease.gif

Thanks MHC.

kimmer, do you have that "avatar" in a transparent gif? I didn't notice until one of your posts appeared in a light grey background that it has a white background. It looks so much better with just the agates showing! One of the few NON-rectangular avatar's! smile.gif

Jennie, I decided to give Molly an update, so I uploaded my avatar directly and it worked perfect. smile.gif (Just remember to enter the correct size in the width and height boxes.)

I don't see that. Which screen? Sounds like it should be a button that appears with every post. ???

Gregg, if you select "fast reply" and then highlight a selection of text from a post that you wish to quote, a button will appear under your reply box which says "add selected text as a quote". If you push that, you'll get the highlighted text in quotes. (I had seen it earlier, but wasn't sure how I got it to show up till just now. smile.gif

Well, I thought I'd uploaded the "white matt gif". Apparently I didn't. fool.gif  Okay, should be all fixed now. smile.gif

tiphat.gif  May I shout to all of you ... I collected the rocks, took the pic ... and ABD took my pic and made me several small versions so that I can use them as avatars and on the banner for my board.

My thanks to ABD! tiphat.gif

It took several seconds, but works just as you said. Thanks! smile.gif
