Title: About the new board software
Post by: MacHeadCase on April 14, 2006, 07:39:42 AM
In my member settings, I have two items that I am wondering what they are for or if they will be of service one day.

These two items are:What are Paid Subscriptions?

And will members here be allowed to upload attachments in their posts and PMs?

Just wondering...   smile.gif

Edited to add:

doh.gif DOH!!! The subtitle should have read: ...drop your questions in here

Peter, as I reported in another thread, to get a new avatar, click on the My Controls link at the top of the page. Then, if I remember correctly, you have to click "Board Settings" from the list on the left. You will find Avatar settings listed on that page. There are only a few to choose from, three different pages which you access from a pull-down box.

One avatar is a Dolphin, by the way.... Roy?

New question:
Is there a visual clue on the topics page indicating which threads I have posted in? If there is, I am missing it. If there's not, maybe that can be an added enhancement later.

MHC , we are running with the default settings. Some of these things will most likely be removed since we don't offer anything that costs money and we don't have space to give each member 50MBs of server space. So expect changes as the days go by.

Peter to clarify: Go to your control panel, Personal Profile/Edit Avatar settings and you have three galleries to chose from...not the greatest but something. Hope somewhere down the line to add more.

Gregg, if you look closely at the blue or red folder to the far left of each thread listing, there is a small white corner on the lower right edge of the ones where you have previously posted. It's not very obvious so I may alter that icon at some point or make another one.

When we get new skins up you may find them more suitable.

Each time I log in, I get the following notice:

QUOTE
IPB WARNING [2] (null)() [ref.outcontrol]: output handler 'ob_gzhandler' cannot be used twice (Line: 0 of Unknown)

This happens both with Safari 1.3.2 and Firefox 1.5 (on 10.3.9)

is this a problem with the board or my setup?

Mayo,

The "Mark all forums as read" option is in a drop down menu in Forum Options (top right).

Harv, it was in the Options drop down menu in the original skin we were using, but with the advent of the new skins it seems to have been replaced with a different menu altogether.  I miss it, too.

Kimmer, I was using the TS skin, but having changed to the Golden Wine, these are the only options I have in the drop down menu ....

 Track this topic
V Email this topic
V Print this topic
V Download this topic
V Subscribe to this forum
Display Modes
V Switch to: Outline
V Standard
V Switch to: Linear+

Are your selections different than these?

Edited to say:  I closed down TS as well as Firefox and upon restart, I now have the options that allow marking the forum as read.  Using the old noodle helps, sometimes.  smile.gif

Audone, glad you got it to work.

Can someone tell me where to find the "Custom Member Title", please. MHC mentioned it in another thread, and I know where to find it on my own board, and others using IPB software -- but I can't locate said option here.

TIA.

At the top of the page, under the banner is a link to the Help files.  Many questions can/will be answered there.

As to the avatars, I don't know, so I'm asking IPS.  They've been great!  But it was a holiday weekend, so I haven't questioned the delays.

It's likely a javascript issue. Make sure you have that turned on in your browser's prefs.

What type of file is allowed?  Thinking.gif

And what size should it be?

They must be one of three types: GIF, JPEG, and something else, probably PNG. TIFF's are definitely not allowed. The allowed types are posted on that page in small ( English ). harhar.gif

However, file size should be no problem, several hundred KB's as I remember.

But, I don't think the board is set up to allow getting a file directly off your drive, yet. So you may get an error message even if you have the correct file type and size. More likely, you will just get the 'generic' your input has been accepted, please wait while we take a short tea break. Or click here if you don't want to wait." message. Then, you be back on the Avatar page and it still won't be showing. So much for Invision's definition of "success"!

NOTE TO ADMINS: Why in the world would anyone want to wait? Thinking.gif  doh.gif  Those are bogus messages/texts. It only points out the slowness of the board. I'm wondering if we can dump that verbiage? And clicking the other link doesn't help, anyway. This is a perfect example of useless verbiage/interface design, not to put too fine a point on it...[end rant for the day hour]

The avatar is "Green-Haze"

New question:
On the old TS, only threads that have posts which have been added since your last session appeared with a graphic to indicate same. On the new TS, it appears that all threads with posts added since the last time you opened that thread appear with such a graphic clue. There are threads coded "new posts" after ones coded "no new posts". Is that right? Is that how it should be? I'm used to the old way, so maybe that's why I like it better.

I'm not going to say it's right or wrong, it's just the way the software is currently set up. I don't care for it at all, but I don't even know if there is a place to change it. I really like the old way, also; it was very easy to see new posts to threads you wanted to keep up with. This way, they almost always are all 'marked'.

It was nice to see the "Post Smilie" icon box go away.

Just found another nice change in the software. The "New Private Message" Alert is no longer a Pop-Up window, which many have globally blocked. It is now a "window-inside-the-window"; you can move it around inside the current window but not outside it. But it also has much more info! It even has the message in it! You don't even need to go to your mail box. Nice touch!

I found it confusing on another board, until I realized how helpful it was. Depending on the length of time set by the board, I can return a day  or two later and pick up reading in unread threads at the "new" spot. I don't always have time to visit every thread that looks interesting, and my bookmarks for TS were becoming bloated with "visit later" bookmarked threads.

So if you just look at the feature as "it saves your place", it's not so bad.

When I've read everything that interests me, I click the "Forum Options" button at top-right hand corner and mark the entire forum as read.

Oh, and I wonder who had 1,403 posts and sent ABD a PM?  whistling.gif  flower-smilie.gif  :shades:

The old way did not require the extra "mark all as read" step, however. The database apparently maintained the list differently or it just seemed to. I don't remember it 'nagging' me with so many 'unread' threads. Of course, when the speed comes back to 'normal' it might be easier to keep up with these things, I just don't have time to spend several minutes just opening threads. The only work-around I've found with the current molasses in January speed is to open multiple threads in tabs and hope at least one will be readable by the time I finish selecting them. That gives the subsequent threads time to open as I read the first one. Of course, the lack of speed also encourages me to not provide less than helpful answers because it takes so long to get back to the thread. That's good for the rest of you guys, anyway! smile.gif

How ironic, I believe it was Bruce who started a thread just before we upgraded the software asking why threads would be identified as read when he hadn't read them. We were advising him to open them in tabs so the main page wouldn't reload.

Now the software is operating as it should but others are now unhappy.

Sigh.    nopity.gif

Well, maybe those who are unhappy with the "new" folder indentification can use my technique for clearing the unread topics.

I read the topics I want to read, then I go to the main page where there's a link to "Mark All Topics as Read". That clears all the folders and resets the forum.

Works for me! thumbup.gif

You must be using a PC! harhar.gif  Not sure why one would "bookmark" a thread instead of opening it in a tab, not even sure I know how to bookmark a url without opening it! Of course, one could always manually enter the url in whatever bookmark manager one uses...

But you are correct, it's all a matter of perspective. All I am demanding is that everyone else change their perspective. It's really that simple, just like me! flower-smilie.gif

What confuses me is that threads are marked as "New", even if I've read them and there are no new messages! That's just not correct.

Apparently, the only way to keep from getting the "New" message flag is to have made a post to the thread. Then, just reading it afterward will keep the "New" flag from appearing, unless there actiually is a new message.

This is completely different than the old method. It recorded the fact that you had read a thread, regardless of whether you posted to it or not.

One would bookmark a thread when one is short of time, but wants to visit thread later and too lazy to scroll backwards to find the "first unread post" for oneself.

Bookmarking a URL without opening? Now, I'm sure you can do this on a MAC ... you right click on the "new post" icon and up pops a nice menu. On the MAC isn't it control-click? whistling.gif

Jim, I'm not finding the same action as you. If I read a thread and then refresh the main forum page it takes away the new message icon. Is that not happening with you? Which skin? Which browser?
Title: About the new board software

The list does update with that method. However, should I quit the browser and start it up later, even within an hour, I will still see "new" messages in a thread that I had read only a few minutes earlier. Of course, visiting the thread shows that there are no new messages; sometimes I can even remember the time/poster and just not bother looking, again.

Right now, over in the Admin area, the thread "some advice from Buddha" shows that there are new messages, even though I read the last one there ( from Al ) at least twice yesterday.

Just above that thread are two that do not show new messages. I know I have posted to both of them. However, both were posted to by me within the last 3 days, the "Buddha" thread post was over 4 days ago. I seem to remember something about that 3 day setting in the board control panel. It may be that after 3 days, all threads become "new" again? Not what makes sense to me. wallbash.gif

With speeds returning to 'normal' it won't be quite such a pain to ask for page refreshes, but I usually don't bother since I quit the browser quite often. I just don't like coming back and seeing false "new" messages. There are bigger problems...
