The first thing I'd like to learn is how to script actions (like pressing cmd+k, down twice, enter, type login, tab, type password, enter, etc.). Is there any way to record stuff like that? I'm sorry, I've never used AppleScript before. Anyway, anyone got time to kill?

That's because Applescript's ability to record things which was so helpful in OS 9 hardly exists in OS X.
Things are changing, however, for OS X. Apple has a couple of items just out, such as Applescript Studio and GUI Interace. They require that you be completely current in OS X and have installed some extra develop tools. In other words, not quite ready for Primetime or the beginner. Third party methods are beginning to appear.
If you are in OS 9, Oneclick will do all the things you mention, but it will never be active in OS X.
You may want to look at Youpi Key, which is free, or Quickeys.
Actually, I have my best success at scripting by finding scripts already written at various sites online, copying them and putting them to use. I've even learned how to alter them for my machine, largely by trial-and-error.
Apple also offers many pre-written scripts.
Just touching the surface here to get the ball rolling.
