Title: Need a new lightweight notebook
Post by: bellbram on May 19, 2006, 05:18:36 AM
For the past four years I've been lugging around a 15" Titanium Powerbook whenever we leave home and now finding it a bit of a chore.

I'd really like something I could put in a pocket.  Unhappily Apple don't seem to be in this market, so I suppose it means getting something that uses Windows, tho' I'd really like to stick with OSX if that's possible.

Am totally ignorant of what's best in the notebook market and would appreciate some advice.  Does it really have to be Windows and if so, can I easily transfer files from my G5 desktop?

With our superfast new site, am looking forward to picking up your recommendations in about 10 seconds  biggrin.gif

Well, not quite that fast. Some of us have to think and type all at the same time and that slows things down. smile.gif

How big are your pockets?

You're not willing to consider a shiny new Macbook?

http://www.apple.com/macbook/specs.html

Size and weight
Height: 1.08 inches (2.75 cm)
Width: 12.78 inches (32.5 cm)
Depth: 8.92 inches (22.7 cm)
Weight: 5.2 pounds (2.36 kg)

A little heavier than some of the Windoze ultra-lights, but depends what you're willing to give up for that pound or so...

Dell ultralights

Me? No way I'd get a Dell just because it weighed less! (Besides, the Mac specs stack up pretty nicely against the Dull...particularly the X-1) smile.gif

For anyone lusting after the MacBooks, Ars Technica usually posts good, well written and unbiased reviews. Here is their take on the MacBooks, Apple MacBook.

Paddy & MHC:   Thanks for your input re the Macbook — and that article from Ars Technica was really interesting.  But really, I was looking for something about 6" x 4".   Maybe I shouldn't have called what I wanted a 'notebook', but I'm not sure what to call the thing I want.  I suppose it would be something akin to a Psion.

The ideal of course would be a Mac 6" x 4", but there's no such animal.  Not having a PC World or a Dixons or any major computer shop on the Island, I can't go window-shopping (if you'll pardon the expresion), so was hoping to get some good info right here.

What all do you want this tiny beast to do?

Would something like a Blackberry be an option? (email, web browser, word processing, spread sheet...)

And there is a program for synching a Blackberry with a Mac:

Is this what you were thinking of?

My G3 iBook, though still servicaeable, is more than three years old and is showing its age. I probably will not repair it if anything goes wrong.

My next computer will no doubt be some flavor of MacBook, probably about the time my G3 needs to be worked on. Hopefully, this will be after they start shipping with Leopard installed.

Edited to correct a misspelled word.

Thanks all of you. I guess I want the impossible, but was hoping there'd be something around that would hold maybe 1GB of critical files, be cabable of email, contact with Tee Ess, cope with downloaded photos and allow file transfer to/from my G5.
Shouldn't weigh much more than one pound and size no bigger than 6"x4".  Also work with a Mac OS.

Guess there's no such animal.

Sounds like you want a PDA...

http://www.palm.com/us/products/smartphones/

(these are phones too)

You can upgrade the memory - I saw 1GB cards for $44.

And sync it with a Mac (depending on the model):

Have a lOOk around here!

"BlackBerry devices--sync your Mac to your BlackBerry device for Free..."

More than 4 years after we began making unique sync solutions for the Mac, people still ask us, "Are you guys nuts?"

Only now they ask, "What Mac user would want a BlackBerry® device?"

And just as before, our answer is: All of them!

The BlackBerry device is one of the best devices and the Mac is the best computing platform.

Why not have the best of both worlds? That's why we created PocketMac® For BlackBerry, the original Mac-To-BlackBerry Sync Solution...

Peter:

I had no need for my new Palm to go on-line . . . I was just looking for the BIG 4 (calendar, addressbook, ToDos, Memos). It also lets me tote around downloaded pics (of grandchildren, vacations etc., 100s if I wish).

I would go on-line w/it, if I wanted to purchase the service. But w/my trusty PB there is no real reason.

When I discovered that there was a GPA device available for the Palm, I bought an extra 2 gig SD card for its maps, to buttress the 1 gig one I already had for photos and "overflow", which hasn't yet occurred. What I found was that photos and the maps of California occupy the 1 gig quite nicely, while the maps for the rest of the US (incl Hawaii) and Canada fit comfortably on the 2 gig number. I doubt that the "demands" of my travels will ever create any necessity to swap cards, except in the most languid of circumstances biggrin.gif .

Some Palms have ports for external keyboards, for the folks who are heavy typists with such devices.

Check out . . . on this site, the pages listed as Handhelds as well as Mobile Managers. . . .  PalmOne Store

There are Palm Stores of the brick-and-mortar variety in SF, should you want to wait until August! biggrin.gif   I doubt you will, however, since Palms are set-up through connections with your Mac. Especially important for all the initial data, e.g. >1000 addresses and phone numbers; 200 jpegs - to date; etc.

I have a T|X. I strongly suspect what you're seeking is a "LifeDrive"

Sandbox, Paddy & Dick:  Thanks for input.  It's looking as if a Palm is probably the answer, but I see from the LifeDrive spec it supports OSX only up to 10.3, whereas the T|X goes to 10.4, so it may have to be the T|X.

I can't get to actually see or test drive the Palm on the Isle of Man as there are no resellers here, so it would have to be a mail order purchase and I fear (as you rightly surmise, Dick) I don't want to wait till I'm in SF.

I have a number of files created in AppleWorks I'd like to transfer from my G5.  Is that doable with the T|X, or would I have to convert them all to Word?

Also, would I also need any additional software, like PocketMac?

Am completely ignorant about handhelds, hence all the questions.

Thank heavens for TeeEss — and it's new superspeed  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif

Later edit:  Think I also read somewhere that Palm no longer support users' queries.
True?  A possible problem?

Peter:

Just weighed my T|X . . . 5.2 oz. Why? Because its downloadable manual (PDF) is HUGE! It's 176 (8.5 x 11) pages long, 7.5 MB. Probably weighs more! I wonder if it could be successfully attached to an e-mail? It would offer you plenty of things to think about.

There is phone support, if you enjoy talking  with Mujibor's cousin. I just called them and they said your phone contact would be 020 7867 0108

The best source for info during my early days with my new model was the "manager" of the Palm Store in SF (the one in Palo Alto is a certifiablly dim bulb . . . go figure!). The former has put me in touch with a users group in the East Bay which I hope to visit this month, since the T|X has more intricate features than my 3 (maybe 4) prior Palms over the past 15 years. Its similarities (oneaccounta the sw, of course) are easy to grasp, but there are more than a few new features I'd like some conversational advice on.

Suggestion: Why don't we have an iSight conversation and I can show you some of the bells-and-whistles as we chat?

Re: LifeDrive. It's being very heavily promoted as the latest and greatest. On the phone a few minutes ago I was told it does indeed handle 10.4.   biggrin.gif

I'm at a loss to give you a precise answer on your AW files expectation. If you can't get a satisfactory answer from that UK phone number, let me check before you spring for the T|X or any other model.

Oh yes, "support's" UK web address is . . .
  Here

Amusing sidebar: I am recalling (while writing this) a young German EE (with NEC) with whom I "conversed" via CompuServe's then MAUG boards - in the early 90s, I think it was - on where he might visit when spending a couple of weeks at NEC in Silicon Valley, so get get the best prices on Palm "stuff". I gave him some advice. We met on that visit and have become friends (over those exchanges). He later was transferred to California and I see him periodically, especially as he plans personal travel throughout the beauties of the Western US.   Ah, this internet . . . clap.gif

Hello bellbram,

If you are really looking for a compact and lightweight laptop, Apple's offering is not for you. Sony's Vivo is a good option, Fijitsu and Toshiba both offer lightweight laptops. I am talking about the weight that's less than 1.5 kg. They have 12" models in such weight, some also offer 10" models. (Sorry, I can't remember the exact model number)

I do find my 12" PowerBook is a bit too heavy. The lightest offering from Apple is weighted 2.36 kg (MacBook), I am a bit disappointed on that.

Just for reference:
MacBook Pro 17" weight: 6.8 pounds (3.1 kg)
iBook 14" weight: 5.9 pounds (2.7 kg)
MacBook Pro 15" weight: 5.6 pounds (2.54 kg)
MacBook weight: 5.2 pounds (2.36 kg)
iBook 12" weight: 4.9 pounds (2.2 kg)
PowerBook 12" weight: 4.6 pounds (2.1 kg)

antony: Thanks for the info, but just having had an iSight chat with RHP, I think a Palm is probably what I need and it's just a question of figuring out which model.

And to digress to the subject of iSight.........

What a pity there seem so few TeeEssers wiling to join the happy throng of videochatters.  Why is that?  We old 'uns who seem to dominate the scene woud welcome a few new faces — especially you gals!

The possible “conclusion” of the Palm portion of this thread may have wider value to more people than just participants, so I’ll add it.

I found when I sought to e-mail Belbram the Palm Mac Manual we were discussing, as expected, it was waaay too large.

Pendragon thereupon came to our mutual aid with a suggestion that has worked beautifully, slickly enabling transmission of the massive document  from San Francisco to the Isle of Man – the Palm weighs in at 5.2 oz, its 8 MB Manual at 176 ( 8.5 x 11) pages).

As is usual with Harv, the item he had found was really “news to me”. I surmise others equally unfamiliar with it might benefit from knowledge of it. FYI . . .

It’s called FileChute and it’s function is to lodge, so to speak, very large items/exhibits/files/whatever on one’s iDisk, from which another person can extract them with ease.

So:Amazing.

Peter and I both thank Harv for another of Harv’s Hints (of the Day!)

Of course, if Harv really knew what he was doing, he would have recommended one merely DL the manual from Palm--Mac User's Guide. yahoo.gif

Still, he is most appreciative for the kind words. blush-anim-cl.gif

Well, you see, we don't want to give up one of the few times we can sit down and relax and not have to worry about how our hair looks or if our mascara is smudged.

We'd like to see you regardless, Kris.  It's we fellows who should worry about our looks — especially on early morning chats!  And we're all very relaxed — especially since the site's speed-up.   biggrin.gif
