When exporting from iPhoto, he could choose to scale the images down to a more reasonable size. You get this option if you use Export from the File menu.
Otherwise, he could use one of hundreds of programs to do this before sending them out. One nice (free) program is ImageWell. Drop your picture(s) to the well, select the size as a percentage), and the jpg image quality. It will update the jpeg size based on these settings, on the fly. http://xtralean.com/IWOverview.html

Thanks for the reply, Mike. I missed it yesterday until evening (see above). When you say "size" do you mean file size, or actually shrinking the image, thus making the file smaller as well?
I have no familiarity with iPhoto. I don't know if it came with the OS. I don't know what level of OSX he has. The iBook he has was purchased in the summer of 2004.
I have used a digital camera at work, but do not own one. I already asked my son in an e-mail if he has iPhoto, and what OS he has. It may be a few days before I get an answer, but he is being very diligent about answering all of our questions when he does respond.

My current iPhoto is 6.0.3, from the iLife06 upgrade of iPhoto 5.x that came in my OSX in my 2005 Al/PB.
My impression is that resolution has most to do with the (byte) size of the photo file. iPhoto has no ready way – that I've been to discover – to change resolution, so that's why I have used PhotoShopElements for that task. ImageWell appears to simplfy that..
Each version of iPhoto has had genuine enhancements.

Sometimes I cheat and drag the small size picture from the E-mail to the desktop - then I put it back in iPhoto as a small picture.
Wth Macs, there are so many ways to do things....

I have always used Preview to crop and rename the pics I take w/ my digital camera and import into iPhoto, b/c I find its interface easier to use.
The resulting files are way smaller [filesize] then the original camera pics.

Graphic Converter will adjust the size and or / rez of pics, and there's a version for OS 8/9.
