Title: Backup software advice needed
Post by: underdog on July 04, 2006, 06:53:30 AM
I have ordered an external drive and need help on backup software. I have kinda narrowed it down to Retrospect, Carbon Copy Cloner, and SuperDooper, and would like your input. Needless to say I would like something simple, and easy to use for both backup and restore.

My vote is for SuperDuper!

Rock solid, fairly priced, user friendly, and great customer support.

To me, this is one of the apps that I consider absolutely essential.

If I could "vote" more than once, indeed I would! coolio.gif

BTW, the backup drive you ordered, is it FireWire and does it support OS booting?

Looks like SuperDuper is going to win by a landslide. The drive I have ordered is from Other World Computing..Mercury Elite 80 GB. Firewire, and I take for granted it supports booting. The SD site recommends OWC among others.

SuperDuper!

I had been a Retrospect fan for years, but I recently switched to SuperDuper. Have not had to do a Restore yet, but it should be a snap.

One minor puzzler:
After SuperDuper quits, the backup drive continues to work for several minutes and I cannot unmount that drive until it finishes. What's going on?

And another question:
After configuring a SuperDuper backup drive, can that drive then be used for any other purpose? When I installed SD, it first had to erase the drive I installed it on. No problem, since it is one of 3 external drives I use. Just curious.

I use SuperDuper! as well.

I too had noticed that the external is still churning data around a few minutes after the backup is finished. My guess is that there is either indexing going on in there or files still aren't finished moving or something like that.

I use that big 500GB for other purposes, I copy over some other files, like I have a duplicate of all my iTunes files on it, a duplicate of all my blog files and images there as well.

SuperDuper gets my vote, too.

You don't have to erase the target if you have paid for SuperDuper. Only the 'trial' mode  requires the erasure. The paid version gives you many more alternatives and is very configurable.
