I was trying what I hadn't tried before. Wanting to control the cookies that accumulate, I chose to accept or reject them manually. Each time
I've tried to launch IE today, and the home page is to open, I go through the
sequence of accept cookie, accept, etc...IE freezes at about the fourth "accept" cookie
pop-up .
If IE should open I would immediately reset cookies to accept as before.
(Unless,
someone can tell me a better way to manage them.) My question is,
"WHAT DO I DO NOW?"Incidentally, FF is working fine now.

If your home page does a cookie update whenever you open the page then you may be blocking the natural path for that page and the result is a freeze?
You may be able to read the source code for that page and see if it has such cookies?
Do a quick change to Google as a home page to test this theory.
If IE opens without a freeze on a google home page then you can assume that the home page your using has timed or dated cookies.

I haven't had a chance to test your theory yet, however, my homepage is my internet provider, Bell South. I made it the Firefox homepage and it is normal.
I deleted some Bell South cookies very recently; saving the ones that looked like my personal info such as name, password, etc. Everything was fine until this AM.

The cookies, according to someone else I trust, are similar to a "do not call" list for telemarketers. If the cookies are in place you are suppose to be left out of those analyses. It wasn't obvious which ones they are, making it difficult to delete many.

It's been YEARS since it was updated [MS canned development on IE shortly after Apple introduced Safari], and no longer works correctly on many web pages.

I realize that about IE; it was there when I got my little third hand
jewel. 
IE may be lost to me, although, I doubt it. So far it continues to freeze. I clicked the Bell South icon on the desktop and got it to open. Then it started with the cookie "thing".
I may have discribed that site a little inaccurately. However, that was the way I had remembered it.

I bookmarked David Pogue.Are you familiar with the name Lisa A. Bucki? I bought her book, Mac OS X fast & easy. She doesn't cover everything in the book, but it was an answer to prayer when I was struggeling so at first. Nobody I know personally has a Mac.
Would you educate me a bit about cookies? I think I know, at least, in part what the do.
What if I delete the cookies for say my account with my cell phone company? Did I loose that info and have to reestablish the account online? Or are they a convenience in some way? CC mentioned cookies expiring; I noticed the Bell South cookies have different expiration dates, one was 2009, another 3 days , and another today.
What does IMO stand for?

You can delete them and many will just be recreated as you visit. Some will need your input if you delete them, like here at TS. If you delete the TS cookies, you will have to log in each time you visit. I ususally accept only cookies set by the site I'm visiting or session cookies and then periodically delete ones I don't want left on my drive, like those from banking or credit card sites.
If you want to reset the cookies, disconnect your modem cable and fire up IE. It won't go online and you can access the prefs to change the settings

Hi Kelly, my book Mac OS X fast & easy is being sold at the above web site. Thankfully, Books-A-Million had it and at an even better price.(on the clearance table)
I think I'm getting in really good shape here. The next project could be to do some upgrading. Will I ever need help then!!
