While few will mourn the recalcitrant eight-year-old, many computer users will harbour fond memories of Windows 98. In automobile terms, it could be likened to a Volvo 240, a cumbersome but useful vehicle, with problems that were well-known but solvable.
It invites readers' "tributes" and it would seem that few are taking the matter too seriously:

There are still a number of Windows 98 machines at work; most of them would run XP but the budget won't let us upgrade. We're going to phase them all out (hopefully) this winter. We have MAC's but only in Journalism and Graphics labs!
I still say Windows 98 and even DOS would still serve a purpose if you had a working system with them on it. They may not be the best tool but they still work!
Wow! 98! Most of our PCs are limping along trying - and usually managing - to run QuarkXPress 3.1 on 95 (I'm lucky - I've got a Win98 machine which manages to run at the speed of warm treacle and freezes or crashes only two or three times a day...
Macs in our place are on the imaging desk (grey and white G4s running Photoshop OS9.x) and in the advert design studio.
