Title: Just in case you miss your old, old MAC
Post by: gunug on July 21, 2006, 09:09:57 AM
I thought at first this was non-functional because it goes into a screensaver very quickly.  It does function like an old MAC:

Even the MacWrite works (sorta), though it is in German (as are some preferences).

I wonder if there wouldn't be a market (small market) for something like this for a lot of the old computers (Apple II, Kaypro, C64, MAC) to run software in a little window on OS X or Windows.  Software emulated in Flash or Java.  I know that there are emulators (I've had some) but nothing that is as easy to run as this little emulator was.  This didn't have to only be about the games, there are some little apps that could be done this way.

I meant to ask you in my train post, how did you get this into a screensaver?

I think Steve is assuming that Gunug had that little application going into his own screensaver or something?

Steve, Gunug ment to say that, once you go to that url, startup your "virtual computer" it automaticly goes into "screensaver" mode.
That's why you see those stars passing by as you are in space.
So it's not that Gunug installed it in his own screensavers.

And yes, back in those days there was a screensaver like that, and yes there was Afterdark and yes... i miss those flying toasters wink.gif

Thanks Mrious_be, that's what I thought. Darn, I was hoping it could be used as a screensaver. I think I still have my old AfterDark program and screensavers lying around (stored away) somewhere.

Yep, the first time I ran this emulation it went immediately into the "warp" screen saver; there seems to be a longer time when I've gone into the emulator subsequently!

I've got a nice "flying toasters" on my G4's under OS X; I think I got it from Versiontracker.com but I'm not certain.  It acts just like the one that runs in After Dark.  I think this "Flash" emulation of OS 7.1 isn't all that flexible as far as adding things to it.

Later, Here's the link to Flying Toasters at VersionTrackers:

Free is a good price!

Yay! Thanks, gunug.  I had the flying toasters on my LC.

If you follow the link back to the website of the Flying Toaster screensaver he had some other screensavers and programs:

I liked his fractal screensaver called Apfelmaennle Screen Saver!

vMac allows you to emulate a Macintosh Plus and run old Mac software on your modern Mac:

I didn't mean to suggest that this was a serious emulation of the old hardware.  I just think it's interesting to emulate in Flash.  One thing I noticed about VMAC is it wants you to have a ROM image of an old machine and while it wouldn't be a problem for anyone who is a packrat like me it might be a problem for some.

I got the impression from the site that it was for emulating Macs on Windows machines and not on newer Macs.

I just installed the Flying Toasters screensaver. It's great to see those toasters again!

Sorry, I gave you the wrong link.  There are versions for just about every platform, including OS X.

I still think it's an interesting idea to have to buy an old MAC 512 or SE in order to power it up and copy it's ROM image into a file in order to run the emulator.  I think it would be hard for most of us to fire a MAC 512 up at all; all of the one's I've seen in the past few years have had either bad power supplies, bad analog boards or funky drives.  I suppose there must be a pirate website (maybe run by the richest of pirates Bill Gates) that has ROM images ready for downloading!

Maybe Apple could be persuaded to turn loose of a ROM image or two for the purposes of posterity!  Think of it, centuries from now, when we're all dust in the wind, someone could fire-up a emulator of an ancient MAC 512 and play a game (original Tetris?) or two!   laugh.gif
