Title: iBook freezing when trying to upload large file
Post by: Frances144 on September 06, 2006, 10:04:32 AM
When I upload my 32mb film to Channel 4, it freezes the screen (goes dark and writes chinese).

I then restart and off we go again.

I have tried repairing permissions, creating more space (now have 20gb free) and am running out of ideas.

My console log says:-

Any thoughts?

1. How are you uploading? Browser or FTP Client?
2. What type internet connection? Dialup or Broadband?

Your free space is not the problem. Sounds like the recieving server is not 'seeing' the uploading activity and timing out. Or, there are too many errors and it simply drops the connection.

3. Have you contacted Channel 4?

1.   Trying to send compressed Quicktime MPEG movie to C4.

2.   I don't know about errors - the film is newly exported to Quicktime and not messed about with in Quicktime (ie worked in, just an exported file).

3.   I will email my mate at C4 and see what he says.  Push comes to shove, I will go along the road and ask my other friend (I have 2!) to upload it with his PC.  I will feel very ashamed.

Never mind.

That 'Chinese' is a kernel panic which is a means of protecting the underpinnings of the OS.

Are you using AirPort? Do you have an external drive connected? If yes to either, remove them from the iBook and see if that makes any difference.
Also reboot the modem.

Other things to consider:

To expand a bit on Kris's comments:

The kernel panic indicates a rather serious problem w/ your computer, possibly with its hardware [have you added RAM, or any new hardware components, recently?]

Why uploading a large file should result in a kernel panic, I don't understand.

I think that Stuffit has the ability to segment a big file into several smaller ones.

What software are you using to perform the upload?  Maybe there's another app you can use?

Problem appears to have solved itself.

Broadband was acting up yesterday, plus I bought a new microfilter.  I uploaded last night when everything was working fine and it worked ok, no problems.

Channel 4 asked for another version, so I uploaded a bigger version no problems this morning.

I think, in retrospect, that my iBook could not cope with Broadband cutting out all the time.  So, it crashed to compliment and add to all my problems!

Who knows!  But thanks anyway for all your thoughts.  Appreciated, as always.

Sorry, but I don't know what that is.

[Glad that your probs have abated!]
