Title: ANOTHER UPDATE: Tiger on my G4?
Post by: kimmer on September 08, 2006, 10:41:12 PM
Last night at our user group meeting, we were supposed to see a preview of Leopard, but the presenter was sick - so we had Q&A instead. Other than the lady who always asks about every feature "Will it work with gmail?", and they all say, "What's gmail?" - it was interesting.
The most interesting part was the widget stuff. Bunches of local widgets that are pretty cool and I was intrigued enough to search out Tiger. Best I found was $89 at OWC.
I'm pretty sure I can run tiger on my *mac*:
PowerPC G4 933 MHz 2MB L3 cache
1.5 GB SDRAM
TONS of space on my 2 hds.
Before I blow $89, I'm would like confirmation that I *can* run it without being bogged down, and does anyone know of a better price?
Thanks! kimmer

I have been running tiger on my 933 since the git go. It runs just fine.

Absolutely. Runs nicely on our 933, and it also runs very well on my old Sawtooth (400Mhz, upgraded with Sonnet 1GHz processor) that my sister now owns. Go for it!

I'm running TIger just fine on two G4/AGP/400MHz; it runs a lot better with all the non-English language stuff stripped out!

krissel, thanks bunches for the links.
gnung, Sneakers does that -- I leave everything in OSX - I'm paranoid.
Thanks for the encouragment, everyone!
Now to convince Sneakers I should blow the money. LOL!

My old 350 megahertz G3 blue-and-white that I handed down four years ago is happily (if slowishly) running Tiger, but it's faster than when it ran Panther. I'm about to get the machine back — with three times as much RAM and a new drive!

Should run fine, but you really don't need all the unused languages nor the printer drivers for the 478 printers you don't own.

D73, you will love the RAM and the new drive!
LOL @ ABD. The Prince and the Pebble -- the Oregon Coast version of the Princess and the Pea. LOL!
If I had dumped all the printer drivers, then I'd have been in a fix when we changed printers. Paranoia rules.

I'm still running Jaguar on the old B&W G3; it works about twice as fast with an internal SCSI drive instead of running the OS off the IDE. I think that the IDE on those old guys is running at 2/3 of the speed on the G4's and the drives were generally 5400rpm instead of 7200rpm!

Figured for a few bucks more I'd have the full install and not have to install jag/panther/tiger and all their updates.

B&W G3 with a G4 550 MHz processor. It is now running at 600 MHz and Tiger fine. Family actually loves it!
A video card may help some as well. Not sure what shipped with your G4, but, installing a Radeon 7000 in the B&W helped.
Plus, I have a MDD with a single processor 1.25 GHz G4 and a Gigabit Ethernet G4 with a PowerLogix dual processor 1.2 GHz processor upgrade, both running Tiger absolutely! There's a Radeon 9000 that came with my MDD that I installed in the Gigabit and a Radeon 9600 Pro was installed in the MDD.

You all have answered my questions that I was about to ask. My older G4 Tower should run Tiger just fine. Its got 9.2.2. now
Do you have to install Panther first? Or can I just use the Tiger disk that came with my iMac G5 refurb(Panther was on it when I got it, they included Tiger disk free).
Remind me how to get rid of all the unused language and printer driver stuff?
Thank you, Jane

"The Tiger Disk from your iMac G5 will not work on that unit. Apple conscripts the installers to look for specific Machine cues if it is the Media included with a Machine."
This is what a friend just emailed to me about installing Tiger on my old G4 tower. I am not sure what he means? I thought if you all have Tiger on your older machines, that I would be able to install it also from the Tiger disk? Thanks again, I am a bit confused with what he said. Jane

Hi Jane,
Mostly, if your newer Mac came bundled with a certain OS, in this case your iMac G5 came with a Tiger disk, the OS disk is specific to only certain Macs and usually more specific to that Mac. That's just how Apple designed the disk.
If it doesn't install, and it will tell you early in the process, you will have to get a retail version of Tiger.
You don't need to install another OS first and Delocalizer will remove the languages. But, before installing, while being prompted, go to options and deselect extra languages and any printer drivers that you don't need. Then you won't have to run anything to remove those things in the first place.
Have fun.

Put another way, if the Tiger disk is a "retail" version, it will work on your G4. If it was included by Apple, because the machine was boxed up after Tiger was released, it may be a disk designed specifically for the G5. In that case, it probably won't work on the G4.
It won't hurt to try, however. If it works, so be it. If it won't, no big deal, you'll just need to buy a retail version ( those will work on any machine Apple supports ).
BTW, have you mentioned TS to your friend? We can use some more 'income"!

Hi Al, Great! I will do that, and get rid of those languages and printer things. Hi Jim, I will try that disk first, and if it wont work, my local Mac store is only about 6 miles away.
Do you want more people to join TS? If so, I can tell them. Ive forgotten how we learned about TS and the process of joining.
Thanks, Jane

Yes, yes YES!!
And if memory serves.... seniornet? RHP?

SeniorNet, yes! But sadly I don't take part in much of their activities much any more, as they gave up Mac and are 100% PC now, at least in our town. I still go to some of the meetings and help out though. (I was going to teach a basic Photoshop class for Mac a few years ago, but nobody signed up, because nobody had a Mac.) Perhaps I should connect up with the classes again, if I get a MacTel? Jane

Yes! The discs arrived. I ripped into the package and now I don't know what to think ... they are Apple discs as far as I can tell, but they aren't in their original sealed cases. No books/manuals/guides, no registration card ... just 4 discs in plastic "round" cases.
Are these legit? Or did I get ripped off? Will they be upgradeable? Do I need a serial number or is that embedded? Will I install and have Apple zap me for using someone elses stuff?
AARRGGHH!!!!!!

Don't worry, Apple doesn't work that way, yet.
Usually these items are OEM, that is they are original material and may have come from a returned DOA Mac or some similar situation.
As long as they install properly you can update them via net downloads with no problem since there is no serial number associated with the OS, only the computer. Only with a new computer do you get the barest minimum of a 'manual' or guide. They figure you will use Apple Help Guide that is in the OS.
Relax, those black helicopters aren't coming for you....

LOL! Okay, thanks.
I did get manuals with both my Jag and Panther purchases, so that's why I wondered why not manual (that I'd ignore anyhow). ROFL!
Tomorrow's project while the lady works on my floors - put a Tiger in my *mac*.

Great idea! When I am installing Tiger on my older Mac, I will put on that good old Blues song by Muddy Waters, Put a Tiger in my Tank!
The Tiger disk is $129 at my local store. I do see it cheaper other places though, but I will get it at the store. Jane

Hi Kimmer, Thank you for that link again, I will get it from them. And with the $50 I save, I will buy more daylilies! I am expanding my lily garden. Spent the afternoon trying to divide some. But its better on the poor plant to buy new ones. Jane

Oh daylilies! Pretty, pretty!!!!!
Wonder if they'd grow here on the Oregon coast?
Gee, guess I'll have to go visit my pals at the nursery and find out.
Poor Sneakers. hehehe
ENJOY, Jane!!!!!!

Oh, yes indeed, they would grow just fine in Oregon! To visit a local nursery to see which ones are recommended would be good.
Here is a very old link(I sure need to do some new pages as these are so dreadfully outdated), http://homepage.mac.com/janec3/PhotoAlbum10.html of what I had planted in 2004. Have a lot more now. We go from 80 degrees F to about a rare low of 20 degrees, so the range is pretty wide here, and these lillies do tolerate it. Even my husband's sister in Franconia NH, has a daylily garden, but she has to find out what ones will deal with that horrid cold. I would just plant a variety of them and see how they do. They really dont take much care either, they are easy. And so pretty! Jane

GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!! My favorites are all the orange ones followed by mutant lily followed by all the rest!
I think I need to find a spot for these over in the triangle. They'd do well there, and then my neighbor could enjoy them as well.
Now - your photo album. Wow! What a wonderful eye candy treat!!!!! Thanks for sharing the link. I am in love with your outdoor pics and family pics and funny pics (cows!) ... made me smile.
THANKS!!!!!!!

Life Rule: Never mention what you paid for anything. There is always someone around who will tell you they paid half! And no shipping almost always follows that 'news'!
Three kids are discussing what their dads do. One says his dad scribbles a few lines on a piece of paper and they call it a poem and pay him $50. The next one says his Dad scribbles a few lines and they call it a song and pay him $100. The last kid says,"That's nothing! My Dad scribbles a few lines, they call it a sermon and it takes eight guys to pass the plates around!"
Life Rule: Never give an idiot a microphone or a place to write.

QUESTION: How the heck do I figure out if I need to do a firmware upgrade before installing Tiger?
