Title: External dvd burner

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find a mac compatible external dvd burner for a mac, of course. I'm trying to find a good deal for a burner that doesn't require a power outlet and only uses firewire or usb. Preferably under 70 dollars?

Here are some close to what you are looking for...but I'm not sure any of them would be very reliable running off the FW/USB power. I wouldn't trust it if it were possible.

My concern about the burner is finding out if they are mac compatible. I mean how do I know if it's a mac compatible burner if it doesn't say?

most everytihng now is mac compatible...
if you build a firewire burner, chances are it'll work

although pre-built burners have come down in price tremendously

http://www.newegg.com is also a very good source for burners, cases and preassembled units.

They have the same Lite-On preassembled unit that Tiger Direct has - for $60.99 instead of $69.99

If going with FW, or a FW/USB combo, look for a case or preassembled unit with an Oxford chipset, as these have proven the most reliable in the past. (not sure if this is still an issue, but they're well regarded anyway)

BTW - I wouldn't buy an external drive WITHOUT an AC adapter - I've had lousy results with "self-powered" hubs - and they don't draw anywhere near the power that an external drive does!
