Title: LaCie CD Burner
Post by: jb on October 22, 2006, 01:28:33 PM
When I had my Mac 4400, I had bought a LaCie 4x4x24x CD Burner. It had come with the Adaptec Toast 4.1.2 software. It worked fine under OS 8.6, then OS 9.04, and finally 9.1. I could not go any further OS Upgrade with the 4400. I had updated the Toast software to 4.1.3, I don’t remember why, may be when I went to OS 9.1.

When I got my iMac G5 in January 2004, I gave my 4400 and its peripherals to my younger daughter, who has been successfully using it since then. Yesterday i went to her place to burn a CD of some files I had on 2 Disquettes. Everything went fine as I was able to copy the Disquettes unto her Desktop and then was able to burn a CD with the LaCie Burner.

My older daughter has had a B&W 350 since 1999. I was envying her then! Her OS is 9.2.2. She wants to install OS X. So I told her to copy all of her previous documents and installers. Since she does not have a Burner in her B&W, I suggested to use my younger daugther’s CD Burner to make CD’s of her data. When we tried that this morning, after installing the Adaptec Toast software, the Toast splash screen said,
“No CD-Recorder. Please check cables and power”. Tried “everything”, e.g.

- Updated the Toast Install’s 4.1.2 version to 4.1.3
- Trashed Preferences
- Installed USB Overdrive
- Trashed previousToast Extensions and installed the Extensions supplied on the Install disc.

I Googled and found a reference to Adaptec Toast 4.1.2 but no “operating” info. Found references to Roxio’s Toast latest 6 an 7 Titanium versions, nothing about the previous Toast versions.

After all this rambling, would somebody happen to have some idea(s) about why the LaCie Burner is not “seen” by the B&W? Is it because of OS 9.2.2?

I installed Toast 4.1.2 on my iMac, updated it to 4.1.3. When I select the app, the iMac opens Classic, the Toast Splash screen opens, and says the same thing:
“No CD-Recorder. Please check cables and power”.

The only option I (and she) have is to bring our computers together, ethernet them, transfer her files on my computer and burn her data using my Superdrive. Is this indeed the only solution?

PS. Ancillary questions.
- Do I wipe her HD clean before installing OS 10.4?
- Do I keep her previous 9.2.2 System folder?

I had exactly the same problem with a B & W and Toast 4.1.1 running OS 9.2.2 and solved it by disabling the following system extensions/folder:
  1. Authoring Support
  2. Disc Burner Extension
  3. Firewire Authoring Support
  4. USB Authoring Support
  5. SDAP Authoring Support
  6. Authoring Support Files (folder)
I hope this will work for you

EDIT
I've just read Kris's reply below, so I'll add that my burner is a firewired Yamaha.
This same problem came up here last year but I can't find the thread.

Regards to all

David

In my recent investigations concerning the B/W for Myrna I enountered those caveats with the early B/Ws. In particular the rev 1 had a lot of problems with upgrading to X and other things. If you have a rev. 2 that will make it easier.

That said, I would not install Tiger as it is too demanding for that mhz and video (assuming rev 1). Panther would be the better choice. If it has the original drive there won't be a lot of room for applications either since X takes up a lot more room than 9. And RAM is more particular in X, each OS upgrade gets more picky. So if you are doing it for the 'play' factor then fine. But don't expect a really adept machine. The one I got for Myrna was rev.2 with a better video setup, 450 processor, 384 RAM and 30G HD. It runs Panther respectably well. Your mileage may vary. smile.gif

Like David, I remember having similar problems way back with Toast 4. The Toast and Apple CD readers conflicted with each other and I had to disable the Apple ones in order to get the Toast to be seen. However this was with a SCSI burner. I assume you had a USB PCI card in the 4400?

Found also..

On MacOS 9.2 the iTunes and Disk Burner extensions were added to the base extension set of the operating system and are conflicting with the Toast or Discribe extensions. For Toast or Discribe to work you would need to disable the iTunes and Disk Burner extensions, or set up Toast/Discribe on a separate extension set with these extensions disabled. The extensions involved are: Authoring Support, Disc Burner Extension, Firewire Authoring Support, iTunes Extension, SDAP Authoring Support, and USB Authoring Support. On some systems you may also need to disable the ipod extension and toast usb support. If you are using Toast the extensions you need are toast cd reader, toast firewire support, firewire enabler, and firewire support. If you are using Discribe the extensions you need are charismac fw cd/dvd, firewire enabler, and firewire support.

Hope this help...

Thank you all.

If TS did not exist, we would have to invent it!!!

David's and ADSR's suggestions did it. I was able to burn without any problems.

jb  thanx.gif a million!
