Title: Should I go from Explorer 5.1 to Safari?
Post by: stripedbass on October 24, 2006, 09:55:22 PM
As I mentioned in a separate thread, I have 2 iMacs.
One is a 333 Mhz. It uses OS 9.2.2.
The other iMac is a 350 Mhz. It uses OS 10.2. For a browser, this iMac uses Explorer 5.1. Should I dump Explorer and use Safari? Can Safari work with this iMac? Would it work better than Explorer 5.1.

My opinion anything will work better than IE (hence why they discontinued it.)
As i mentioned in a previous thread, i highly recommend upgrading to 10.3.9 currently owning an iMac 350mhz myself.
Runs great!
If IE or Safari doesn't work for you, try Camino (i don't know if it can be used by Jaguar) or Omniweb (same for that too)

In a word, yes.

Yes, go with Safari - but don't trash IE. Keep it in the Applications folder in case you need it to interact with the occasional sites that don't support Safari or Firefox. I have been on "webinar" and banking sites that only worked with IE. Visiting those sites under IE was unpleasant, but I endured it because NOT visiting them would have been worse.
For ordinary browsing, though, Safari is wonderful! Firefox is a close second. If you haven't tried "tabbed browsing" yet, you have a real treat in store for you!

I vote for Firefox.
I am using it almsost exclusively and love it !!! v1.5.0.7 I trashed all vestiges of IE several months ago. It is so full of holes and very insecure.
I'm planning to upgrade to v2 of firefox in the not too distant future when you all tell me it's good.

My $.02 for what it's worth. I would definitely stop using IE--but agree with susato to keep it around for the odd site that needs it. (Thankfully, these are becoming few and far between.)
I found that Safari does not work as well on OS10.2 or 10.3 as I see it on 10.4. In my experience, after using Safari for awhile on the pre-10.4 systems, I began having problems with spinning wheels when I startup or shutdown. People have suggested various workarounds and fixes, but why bother when there are other browsers that work without having to do that??
For my eMac on 10.3.9, I'm very happy with Firefox--including the most recent update to Firefox 2.0. For my iMac (dv+; 450) which uses 10.2.8, I've found that Camino seems to work best--but I'm not sure (and am too lazy to run to the basement to check) which version of Camino I'm using on there.
But by all means, stop using IE! Even their own site (msn.com) will cause problems on a Mac!

I would stop using IE 5 just because of the horrible CSS capabilities it has. You will find that it renders sites horribly because of this downfall. Basically every other browser is better at it.
I vote for Safari, as it's my favorite, but Firefox and Camino are good too. Some people even like iCab, but I never really enjoyed it (other than on OS 9 computers because it's the only OS 9 browser stil lactively developed).
As for the compatibility issues that RobW mentioned, I have not come across a site in over 2 years that I have needed IE for. The only reason I still have it installed is to check web designs against.

Hi giantmike. Actually, you are correct! I can not think of a site that I've come across recently that required it. What I do find handy is having a 2nd browser ready to use for certain sites that require that the pop-up blocker be turned off. My online banking and a few other sites are like that. Rather than having to turn off FF popup blocker (and then turn it back on again), I use Netscape for those situations and never miss a beat. I continue to use FF as my primary browser.

I would go to safari, because it is the most optimpized browser for mac. But what you guys are saying about its CSS capibilitys, but that is not nececaraly a bad thing because most sites are desighned for IE.
