Quick question...  before, when I'd go into this utility and click on 'firewire', it would tell me what devices I had hooked up to that port and the specs on those devices were shown.

Now it 'spins its wheels' for quite a while and just says:  "FireWire Bus:  Maximum Speed:  Up to 400 Mb/sec"

The devices are turned on and functioning...

Any thoughts??     I did trash the 'com.apple....' preference--no joy.  This isn't a big thing as long as everything works--just wonder why/what????

I believe it's up to the specific bridge in the external to communicate with the profiler. Have you disconnected the FW drives, waited a few minutes, then reconnected? Then try the profiler again.

It's not critical that these things show up as you realize. My 9600 rarely gave the correct info on lots of externals but they all ran fine.

Thanks, Krissel.  Your suggestion worked and I'm happy.  However, you're right... as long as they function like they're supposed to, it's not a biggie.  Just thought it curious/strange that those devices wouldn't show up.

Krissel,

While I agree with your  "if it ain't broke don't fix it" approach, I feel that any anomaly with computers should be investigated. I have found that some anomalies I have run into were precursors to disaster.

I really didn't mean it along the lines of 'don't fix it'. It's just that in some cases the System Profiler is not able to recognize some peripherals due to inconsistencies with the OS and older hardware. The profiler would never show the SCSI stuff on my 9600 while in Panther because the X profiler wasn't programmed to look to look for it on that machine. Of course the SCSI drives were there and worked otherwise I would never have booted in the first place. Likewise the processor was not recorded properly as well as many other things but they all were running just fine.

However in the case where it used to work and now it doesn't, then I'd investigate.
