I guess it depends on what you'll be using it for--just  music? Video? Other files? How much music and how large are the files?...  Thinking.gif If it's for my holiday gift, I won't be picky. biggrin.gif (I'll even spring for my own AppleCare.)

Well, I have a 30GB video one, a 20GB 3rd generation, daughter has a shuffle and a nano.

The 30GB is a huge memory - I know you can get bigger but I have never thought I am stuck for space and I have loads of movies on mine and music and audiobooks.

They are fantastic except for the shuffle which is a pain as you can't see the screen and if youa re listening to an audio book you can get lost fairly quickly.

Daughter loves her nano and we have speakers for her.

I have used my 3rd gen to record a meeting (which was quite successful for the minutes) and it lives in the car with an iTrip, which works adequately.

Black or white is all up to personal preference. However, if you really want to "stand out", get the U2 version.

Thanks folks, I just recently noticed this and I was in the market for another recorder. I have a Naturally Speaking Mobile Recorder now, but it doesn't work on the Mac side in MacSpeak (iListen) and the requirements for recorders is very high and requires Olympus only recorders that quite frankly seem to be extreme. So, I've been using Dragon on in MS XP instead of iListen for remote recordings just to avoid the lack of options.

If iPod can meet the standard I need for iListen then it will have a recorder with multiple purposes that would suit me just fine!

I know nothing about them, I used a friends once a few years back, and listen to one at the Apple Store about a year ago.

I have about 13 gigs of music in iTunes, a few tutorials in movie form, some seminars from classes I've taken that may all amount to a gig, but not much.
