It's not a new topic, but as Highmac (Neil) said before, no apologies for starting it up again
Personally it's
1) The Good The Bad and the Queen. This could well end up being my album of the year. Damon Albarn has come a long way from his "Mockney" days with Blur.
2) The View. OK, so they come from Dundee. Well we all have our cross to bear

Today I have been listening mostly to my own voice. I'm going through the training texts in iListen. Wish me luck on the final outcome!

Might not be your cup of tea, but if you have Freeview, the BBC is running a loop of a Norah Jones concert on channel 301 - the "red button" channel - from a Radio 2 show she did recently. Nice gentle late-night listen... These R2 loops are usually 30 minutes, repeated for several days! Er... don't ask me why, though!

If all that that you can hear from your cat you are lucky.
At 4.30 - 5.00 am it's 2 or 3 cats making it very obvious that they want fed and than let out.
Unfortunately we can't fit a cat flap

Egmont by Beethoven - played it last night at Orchestra, had no idea what we were doing, I seemed to get to the end at the same time as everyone else give or take, sounded pretty painful so downloaded off Emusic and listening to it. Very nice. I like a bit of Beethoven!
I might even practice it! Stranger things have happened.

Looking for some good bluegrass.

New Grass Revival? [now split up, but John Cowan and Sam Bush have some great tunes out]
Nickel Creek?
Rob Ickes?
Tony Rice?
[my younger brother is quite the Bluegrass Maven, and periodically hosts a Bluegrass radio show on KAOS, which is available streamed on the 'net]

Depends on the precise moment the question is asked; currently it's Blondie's Heart of Glass, segue-ing into Tony Rice & David Grisman, then the Tubes, the Cardigans, the Beatles, Taj Mahal
My current Mondo Playlist contains more than 650 selections, ranging from Classical to Bluegrass, Rock, Country, Acapella, and many artsts who are difficult to classify in a single genre.
It's about a day and a half's worth of music, set to shuffle and continuously loop. Lots of Beatles, Police, James Taylor, Shawn Colvin, Sheryl Crow, Who, Weird Al, Warren Zevon, Ry Cooder, Dixie Chicks, Don Henley, Diana Krall, Elvis Costello, Dave Brubeck, Chuck Berry, Delbert McClinton, Frank Zappa, James McMurtry, Jimi Hendrix, Bette Midler, Bela Fleck, Prokofiev, Mussorgsky, etc., et.al.

A brilliant album by a VERY underrated artist. He is continually being name checked by other musicians over here. A very tragic story. In case you were not aware, the John Martyn track Solid Air was written about Nick Drake.

JJ Cale live just to see if I really like it. So far so good. All I really knew about him was that he wrote 'After Midnight' which Clapton covered.
Watched a BBC4 documentary last week called To Tulsa and Back which included clips from the Crossroads Guitar Festival with an obviously nervous Clapton joining Cale on stage for After Midnight and saying afterwards he (Clapton) had 'been playing it all wrong for years'.
Cale's manager said Cale had once gone eight years between live engagements - "from a manager's point of view he's a nightmare, but he's such a lovely guy".

At this very moment, I'm listening to Barbra Streisand singing Memories (Cats). Great voice.
I happen to be in the middle of copying old CDs into iTunes on their way to my iPod. Today I've listened to to Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra (8 CDs), Helen Reddy, Anne Murray, The Judds, Tom Jones and Whitney Houston. Oh yes, and the Carpenters! These old ones require manual typing since they are so old they are not in iTunes Store for auto transfer of song title, performer, album title et al.
Yesterday I copied and listened to some newer CDs by George Strait, Jimmy Buffett, Celine Dion, Billy Joel and others.
Hey, when you're 69 y/o and it's freezing outside, what else is there to do?
Great enjoyment listening to good music for a change.
Timely thread for me.

Yes Dave, Streisand has a beautiful voice! As does Whitney Houston, well all you've mentioned actually, it's usually the Genre that keeps them from being played as frequently as they used to be. I have some of those oldies as well, which I've been copying off albums or cassettes for sometime now. It's wonderful to play them now and again, it does bring you back, revisiting faded memories.

Apparently, my taste in music diverges significantly from that of many of the people here...

I've ben listening to a lot of VNV Nation lately. They're an electronica/EBM band--highly synthesized, very catchy dance music with thoughtful, introspective lyrics, not a combination one sees very often. They're also die-hard Apple Mac fanatics, and they sequence and record all their music on Apple computers. They even bring Apple Powerbooks with them on tour. I recently wrote a long essay about why I am not Buddhist, inspired by a Twix candy bar and the VNV Nation song "Epicentre;" lyrics to the song are sprinkled throughout the essay.
I've also been spending a lot of time listening to Wumpscutt and A Perfect Circle. Wumpscutt is another electronica/EBM band; A Perfect Circle is a side project of Maynard Keena, lead singer of Tool. A Perfect Circle is not quite as grim and angsty as Tool, but it's pretty close; many A Perfect Circle songs center on alienation and anger.
I also really, really like Holly McNarland, a Canadian neo-folk singer. Neo-folk is almost always relationship processing set to music, and what's not to love about relationship processing?

I've been into Electronica for many years actually.
Now of course the electronic music genre is quite diverse in and of itself and I do shy away from heavy mental/industrial, as much as I shy away from anchovies on my pizza but good pizza, like good sounds are always welcome.

If you have a worm you got to feed it, choosing Buddhism or Twix is really a matter of appetite.

Gee, I thought I had wild taste liking Blues, while most of my family prefers classical music. They all play some sort of instrument, and all play keyboards.
I guess I will leave the electronic music to you youngsters. But I am looking forward to a class in Garage Band, where we will learn some electronic music, and other genres, from a couple of really good kids in our local high school. There is a lot of local talent around here, some of the kids are really amazing. This class will be starting some Sunday morning, soon I hope. I sure dont mind paying for these classes and supporting the local kids who are into arts and music!
Should be fun.

Heh. I'm pretty sure I don't qualify as a "youngster" by anyone's stretch of the imagination.
I've noticed that I tend to like variety in music; a lot of the music I listen to lives on the turbulent edge where different genres come together. I also tend to seek out styles of music where there's a great deal of novelty and innovation, rather than more traditional genres where there's little change. I don't think that's related to age; if anything, the older I get, the more I look for new genres of music.
The other thing I've noticed is that the music I listen to has to have something meaningful to say. Pretty melodies don't cut it; if the artist or group doesn't ave anything to say, it won't hold my interest.
-
I am the only person in the family who is not musically talented(or artistically either), so I am now thinking that in retirement, I would like to start to take some lessons.
Actually I do play piano somewhat, and would love to take that up again.
The kids have various keyboards that do all sorts of things, and that would be fun. But first I would start with the basics.
They have and recommend Roland keyboards.
I think this would be a whole lot of fun, now that I have the time.
I do love instrumental music, perhaps thats why there is quite a lot of Jazz that I like.
Anyway, I am looking forward to this, and the kids will help me pick out the Roland keyboard that they think I should have. Of course, they will pick out the one THEY want, so when they come and visit the grandparents, they will have something decent to play.

Surprisingly....
Las summer, still in Belgium we went to a festival called Werchter Classic that is promoting older music and have a target rate of 30+ ages, so basicly music from popular bands in 70's and 80's.
We saw a few bands, and although I expected more of some of them, Bryan Ferry with his Roxy Music came out performing best, even in a way better than the main act Simple Minds cause we didn't expected this at all from Bryan Ferry.
The guy has a nice age but gosh, they could still perform live
Others were Simply Red (yuk, don't like them anyway and they were bad)
Arsenal (were ok, since I didn't really knew them)
Bryan Adans, who performed he's usual set of dreamingless music, just like listening to a CD actually.
Sting, I really expected so much of him but it was really dissapointing
Not really listening to anything now but I do have Depeche Mode loaded on my iPod Shuffle most of the time since they are my all time favorits, their life performances are really awesome and I feel bad to have missed the last one
The music I last bought on iTunes is the latest Faithless (surprisingly, much better than I have expected, even I thought they would wear out but they have altered the influence a bit and came out with another great album to listen at) and... "Safety Dance" and "Pop Goes the World" from Men Without Hats
