Homeowners in the area of Quantico, VA and near other military reservations are experiencing broken garage door openers due to interference from military equipment:

For decades, the military has held a portion of the radio spectrum, from 138 to 450 megahertz, in reserve. That part was borrowed by remote-control manufacturers, with the understanding that the signal be weak enough to be overridden by the military.
Obviously as a technician I must tell you that you will be able to fly military aircraft using your garage door opener if you put in fresh batteries!

That's almost as cool as being able to change the color/make of your vehicle by pointing your finger at it!

Lightning fried our garage door opener, we got up the morning after the storm and the door was about half way up and the electronics were cooked.
So we took it out and its now 'manual'.
Luckily nothing else inside got zapped. Just a close by tree.
And there were no skunks or coons inside taking refuge from the storm.

Next thing you'll know, garage door openers will be a violation of national security and there will be black choppers circling your house...

Only in Boston.

Jane - I suggest that it wasn't lightning but rather a low flying stealth aircraft! At least it makes a great story!

We do have some great aircraft here at our local AFB, Otis. Have our own private airshows if the wind is SE, as they use the runway which ends right at the tip of one of the lakes we kayak in.
And with the SW wind, we can go to another runway and the approach to it is right over a dirt road, you can park nearby and walk over to it.

There you go; send the bill to the military!

They could be charging admission!

Guess this is why they never had garage door openers on the few garages they had in base housing.
