Bill,
On both my PPC DP 800 and my 2' Intel Machine...
1. Made and verified bootable backups
2. Repaired Permissions and ran DiskWarrior
3. Disconnected all peripherals (except keyboard and mouse)
4. Used the Combo installer
5. After installation, re-ran DiskWarrior and again Repaired Permissions (no issues noted).
I haven't a clue what gremlins lurk, but initially, all seems dandy. Maybe tomorrow, the tune I sing will be different. But as of now, all is sweetness and light.

Had to happen! I just upgraded to 4.8 last Saturday!
As my standard practice is to move very slowly on these things, I suppose I'll download this one a few months after Leopard gets it's first upgrade!
How do people find time to do all the 'dance' steps!
-
Thank you for the notice and link, I will put it on my G5 first, then get the intel one and stick it on my husbands new Mac.
Ive been thinking that I should update this 10.3.9 Mac, as I am not concerned with the version of Bryce that would not run on 10.4 any more.
Yes I should do it. My Tiger disk is at one of our kids houses in Boston, but they will bring it next visit with the grandkids.

10.4.9 is one of the most significant "point" upgrades Apple has ever released, and implements a LOT of improvements, bugfixes, and security fixes (including fixes for the problems reported on the Month of Apple Bugs Web site). It also fixes potential problems with Dashboard, improves application launch times, improves handling of corrupt or damaged fonts to make font-related crashes less likely, implemets many networking bugfixes and stability improvements, and even improves PDF handling in Preview.
I'd recommend not waiting to install this one.
-
Hi Tacit, I just fired it up on my G5, and it is really nice, things seem faster.
But I had not seen any problems earlier. But I always install the new OS upgrades as soon as you all here say to.
I will do my husband's brand new MacTell tomorrow morning.....
But I was wondering if I should do this one, my G4 iMac 20" machine? Which is 10.3.9.
I will have to get the Tiger disc that went up with the grandkids to Boston to upgrade the old G4 tower which I gave them.
Then after installing it, I would have to go to 10.4.8 before going to .9?
Anyway, I know I should do it.
Thank you!

I went ahead with the update. No problems at this time. It might be a bit early to see if things are quicker, improved, etc., but the download/install was uneventful.
Tacit, you're like EF Hutton (without the money
)--when you talk, I listen.
-
Hi Tacit, How about starting an online Mac school, eh?
I could get you many many students, I would be #1.
Check out LVS, they are hiring, and you would be a winner!
I am not kidding, you would be great. You have a knack for explaining stuff.

Downloading now ... just curious ... what happens when the next update is released?
10.4.010? 10.4.9a?
Just wondering.

HEY AND WHAT COMES AFTER 10.4.9?????????
-
The next big cat! The one with the spots. And the iPhone. And the iWhatever next.
Its great.
But did you see on the news this morning that advertising will boom on cell phones, because of the way they will be used. No longer are they just for voice communications, but for surfing the web, and other computer like stuff.
So the ads will come! The news guy was talking billions of dollars!
But I am assuming that if I keep my little regular cell phone which has none of those capabilities, will it become bombarded with ads? I dont think it could happen, how could they do it. Yes, they could call me relentlessely, but no answer if I dont know the caller ID?
This will be quite interesting as our phones get more interactive.

The next big cat!
Uhhh ... not for me.
I wonder if Apple will continue to support Tiger/Panther/Jag?

How about 10.5?

Wow, first post in a WHILE.
Did anybody else notice that their computers internal speakers are much loader after the update?
-
This is probably the last upgrade before Leopard. http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/
Which you may see in June?
-
One small 10.4.9 nit noted with my 2’ Intel iMac-
I am virtually certain I did not have the problem with 10.4.8, so, FWIW, I attribute it 10.4.9:
The “Hot Corner” (System Preferences/Desktop & Screen Saver> Screen Saver pane) no longer worked.
I then trashed the com.apple.ScreenSaver.Engine.plist, restarted, and all is again right with the world.
Strangely, at least to me, the above plist has not reappeared.

Now that you mention it, there is a very noticeable increase in volume on my Intel iMac. Works for me.
Same increase while using Airport Express to speakers in another room.
-
I noticed the speaker volume too,
and perhaps a tiny bit of speed.

Apparently, many users were having problems as a result of inadvertently hitting the Eject key.
Now, instead of a quick tap to eject one’s optical media, device, or volume, the Eject key must be held down for a half second or so.
I think I can live with that. Though I won't be surprised if some third party develops a hack to set the Eject key response time back to where it was.
-
Harv, about a minute ago I was getting ready to post that since the update my eject key wasn't working correctly. Then I noticed it worked if I held it down for a second. Thanks for the explanation on that one.
-
So far so good on two Macs. 20" Intel iMac and Gigabit Ethernet Mac.
Used the combo updater after making bootable backups of the OS partition on a portable firewire drive.
Now, to debate if I want to do the update on the other 3 running Macs in the house.
-
Interesting eject key change,,,,,,,when I put my Macs to sleep for the night, I hit the command, option, and eject keys. I did that last night, went into the kitchen, but noticed one was still on. Came back in and repeated the process, but did notice that I had to hold the key down for a longer time. So, yes, this did change my 10.4.8 Mac also.
I am wondering if I should wait a little bit before I install it onto my husband's new MacTel?
Jane

^Didn't know about the sleep command. Fun.
-
command, option, control, eject shuts em down, like I do when the T-storms are crackling

If Apple were to follow conventional naming techniques and release an update after 10.4.9, it would be 10.4.10, then 10.4.11, and so on. You see this often in Linux apps, which are updated so frequently you'll simetimes find version numbers like "2.6.131".
Updating from 10.4.anything to 10.4.9 can be done in one swoop; it's not necessary to update to 10.4.8 first.
I've also noticed that 10.4.9 puts a delay in the Eject key, which is good because I accidentally hit the Eject key often when I reach for F12 (Dashboard) or F11 (Expose) on my MacBook keyboard...
-
I will go ahead with my husband's Mac then.
My oldest Mac has 10.3.9 on it, how would be the best way to upgrade that one to 10.4.9? I do have a Tiger disk, I bought it for one of our kids. Its in Boston, but they could send it to me if I needed it.
Thank you,
Jane
-
Jane, you will need a Tiger disk - since 10.4 wasn't a free update. Once you've installed that, you can use the Combo update for 10.4.9 to make the leap.
-
Oh, That is good, they will be here with the grandkids in a few weeks, so I will remind them to bring the Tiger disk.
Thanks,
Jane

Just used software update and everything went well. I Repair Permissions before and after, and unconnected any peripherals.
-
After updating my G4 iMac to 10.4.9, I experienced my first kernal panic ever with Tiger. It occurred when I double-clicked on a dmg file to mount it.
I started up with single user boot (Command-S) and ran AppleJack. On rebooting, I have had no more kernal panics. However, I have had recurrent problems mounting dmg files. Work-around suggested on MacFixit worked: did Safe Boot and then rebooted. Now able to mount dmg files without any problems. Safe Boot automatically deletes the following files:
/System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
/System/Library/com.apple.kernelcaches
which seems to solve the problem in mounting disk images.

Is it really necessary to disconnect peripherals? I would think you should leave them connected so that the new system could detect and set up for them.
-
Ive never disconnected any of mine, I think that was an issue long before with some LaCie external HDs with an earlier like perhaps OS 9. But I cant remember, its here somewhere long ago,,,,

One thing I noticed with the update. Just as noted on xlr8yourmac .... after updating to 10.4.9(using the delta version), my APC UPS devices were no longer recognized by the Energy Saver system pref. This was true for each of the each of the 3 systems to which I've applied the update (2 G5 iMacs and a G4 Mini). Disconnecting the usb cable and reconnecting it causes the UPS to be recognized again ..... however after a shut down and restart ..... communication with the UPS is again lost. I have not yet tried to reinstall the update via the combo updater, nor have I tried to use APC's shut down software (which I have never used, since OSX, up until this latest update, controlled the UPS just fine). If anyone is having a similar issue .... or no issue, please post (including UPS brand).
UPDATE: The only way I was able to solve the problem was to apply the combo updater. Normally, I do my updates with the combo updater rather than the incremental updates .... and in retrospect, should have done the same this time. After reapplying 10.4.9 via the combo updater (to all three systems), the energy saver preference panel now recognizes my UPS units after a cold start or restart.

One of the guys in the office was reading me this but I didn't have time to post it then:
ttp://digg.com/apple/OS_10_4_9_Update_Causing_Ugly_Crashes
I don't know but I'll wait and see how this one shakes out!
I saw this picture and thought it could be the mascot feline for 10.5:

Later: I realized that I had 2 10.4.8 partitions to choose from (one on an external firewire drive) so I went ahead and ran the 10.4.9 upgrade on it! Seems to work well and comes up faster I think. I'm not sure about the eject button behavior (My keyboard is a MACALLY iKey and doesn't have an eject button) so I use F12 which also kicks in the Dashboard first so it's always been hold it down to get a drive eject.
Even Later: I don't know if the crash was ugly but it went from playing something in iTunes to a blue screen and the spinning circle of dashes you get when it's booting. Didn't come back 20 minutes later so I rebooted the thing and booted the other volume!
-
^Love the kitty.

Ran the 10.4.9 update and have had NO probs.
It would be most interesting to compare all the "extra" stuff folks have running to see if any of that contributes.
-
•Repaired Permissions and ran DiskWarrior
•Upgraded via the Software update CP as usual
•Repaired Permissions and ran DiskWarrior again
Did notice the eject key thing. I like it now that I know it's intentional, I thought something was wrong!
Seems a lot faster to me. Especially opening applications like Photoshop that seemed to lag a little before.
No problems so far.

Just updated myself... well... not myself (i wish) but my iBook
All is well although I havent' checked the sound increase on my iBook yet, would be nice to have that actually.
About the eject key, I kinda hoped it would have been done for the laptop computers, cause just like on my iBook, the eject key = the F12 key so I have to choose what to use it for.
Since my Dashboard is my upper right window corner I disabled the F12 key and only use it to eject.... although not even that since most of the time I just use the key combination "cmd+E" in the finder.
So I tried if I could use the F12 key (just pressing it) to activate Dashboard, and use the Eject key (Press and hold a second) to eject Media but that is not working, pitty
Actually, I have the feeling the Eject Key is not working at all... oh well, I'm used using shortcut commands so I'll get by.
Now I have to update my TS signature.

Upgraded through Software Update...NO problems so far!!!
