The Singularity Institute wants you to contribute money to support the development of "stable self-improving systems" which means you would be supporting Artificial Intelligence efforts:
Peter Thiel, who used to be CEO of Paypal, will match your contribution up to $200,000! There are some nice lectures (by Ray Kurzweil, Douglas R. Hofstadter, and other wise people) about Singularity here:
Maybe Jerry Lewis isn't going to be doing a telethon for this anytime soon; but it is interesting! I wasn't being serious about getting out your checkbooks!

I read through the Overview but one thing kept going through this human's brain...how will we, as humans, be able to recognize 'smarter than human intelligence'?
Really.

I still think that these will only be tools and not "prime" operatives in any situation. Asimov's I, Robot is a long way in the future!

Whaddya mean? It worked. If you let a monkey have your keyboard, eventually some of the output will be intelligible. The problem is that the process will inevitably reverse itself, and y ouend upwiht htpehal thasol fjeonglaur hdslshtalkuda djhapos gjeplf
