Jane, Jane! Please do not "kayak, hike, bike" in potential terrorist target areas, especially airports! tease.gif

This info has been around ever since the satellite owners made it available starting several years ago, probably pre-9/11. Much of it is technically out-of-date but much is still useful for many less than healthy uses.

Methinks it's a little to late to be trying to stuff that cat back in that particular bag. Besides, I wouldn't imagine that the info provided in already not-terribly clear Google Earth photos is all that useful to anyone with serious ambitions to do something nasty.

That did happen once, not too long after 9/11 our local Air Force base was closed to anybody who didnt work there, and security was really tight. (Before this, we used to go over and watch the F-15s practise landing and takeoffs.)
But on one side of the base, there was a company installing a huge water filtration plant.  We were out biking in the Crane Wildlife Reservation which borders the base, and the construction people had bulldozed a new dirt road onto the base, so we took it.  And ended up on the base, and yes, we were quickly kicked off. 2 old gray haired people we are on mt. bikes, but I can't blame them for ousting us.  
We also have a PAVE_PAWS radar installation here,

 and security is incredibly tight there.  To view that incredible place, we had to apply weeks ahead of time with our SS #s and everything, and then when we got clearance, we got to tour it.
Its a fascinating place, and when the grandsons are old enough to understand it, we will arrange for them to come on another tour with us.

I think they should also go rip all of the maps out of back issues of National Geographic magazines.  And also they could carefully run magnets down the sides of the heads of the voters in that guys district so voters will forget to vote for him!

Been a while since I launched Google earth, but aren't certain areas already fuzzy or even "not available"? Shoot, some of this stuff you can find on Thomases maps in the store.

There is a lot of great imagery on GE, and we use it all the time for our fun stuff.
But I know that we cannot see the detail that some people say they get, is this something that we would get if we paid for it?
How do the Real Estate agents get the imagery that lets you see the shrubs in the yard and details that we cannot access with free GE?
And I just read in the WSJ that "Insurers require homeowners to make expensive upgrades to protect property; Using Google Earth for Inspections"
How do they get anything that detailed to know if someone has installed new windows or fireproof shutters?

Regions vary a lot. Few details for anywhere in Iowa for example. smile.gif

What is "Iowa"? tongue.gif All I've heard is that it's some place a lot of politicians seem to want to go to. Sounds like a good reason to avoid the place, IMHO. dntknw.gif OTOH, it may be that wheat and corn don't make for highly detailed images from space! Especially if it's 'waving'! I always ask folks to be still when I photograph them. smile.gif
